  • 101 Ways to Fundraisex
    1. Online Fundraising: Raise money online! Visit your local Heart Walk website and register for the event. Personalize your Heart Walk page with a photo and story of why it's important to you to participate in the Heart Walk. Send emails to friends and family asking them to support your efforts with a donation. 2. Corporate Matching: Make your company work for you. Ask them to match donations made by other employees. 3. Friend-Match: Ask your friend who is making a donation to look into their company's matching gift program. 4. Theme Dinner: Hold a themed dinner event for 10 of your friends. Donation: $50 a head. Spend no more than $20 a head on the food and you will have $300 in pledges. Better yet, get the food donated if possible and simply ask for donations at the door. 5. Garage Sale: One person's trash can be someone else's treasure. Get all of your friends to donate items for a super garage sale and have people "buy" things with pledges. Advertise it in a local newspaper. Keep plenty of pledge forms on hand! 6. Mow-a-Thon: Get your kids involved and declare a weekend where they will mow your neighbor's lawns for $20 (or whatever amount you want to set). 7. Car Wash: Hold a car wash either in your neighborhood or at work. Ask some local business to contribute items you will need for the car wash and get your friends involved. 8. Fundraising In your Office: Your work place is a great venue to find support.

  • Nothing Is As It Seems: Reading Deviance in Faulkner's Sanctuary
Nothing Is as It Seems: Reading Deviance in Faulkner’s Sanctuary and McCullers’ Reflections in a Golden Eye by Amanda R. Johnson A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in English Middle Tennessee State University August 2014 Thesis Committee: Dr. William Brantley, Chair Dr. Laura Dubek This thesis is dedicated to my Grandmother, Helen Campbell Johnson, and my Mother, Debra Johnson, the women without whom my love of literature could have never blossomed; my father, without whom I could never have gotten through any of this; my Aunt Shirlea Pemberton, whose ears were always ready and open for deviant discussion; my friends, who most surely endured me at my most trying moments; and, finally, my professors, without whose passion and gentle guidance I never would have gotten over my hatred, caused by fear, of southern writers in general. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of my director, Dr. Brantley, and my reader, Dr. Dubek. They have endured my wordiness armed only with the kindest of red pens. iii ABSTRACT Both William Faulkner and Carson McCullers question distinctions between deviance and normalcy through characters that challenge parameters of socially accepted behavior. In Sanctuary (1931) Faulkner presents the seedy underworld of a Memphis brothel; he entices readers into this social abyss while prompting them to investigate the crimes presented and to ponder the cloudy sources of deviant behavior. In Reflections in a Golden Eye (1941) McCullers portrays a commonplace world—that of an army base— in opposition to its commonplace depictions; in the process, she transforms readers from mere voyeurs into voyeur creators.
