Review of Gianluca Rizzo. Poetry on Stage: The Theatre of the Italian Neo- Avant-Garde. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2020. Hiju Kim Among the many innovative achievements of the Neoavanguardia and the Gruppo 63, the Nuovo Teatro stands out as a platform that allowed poets to carry their words onto the theatrical stage where art met the public, both literally and figuratively. The Nuovo Teatro was a socially driven artistic practice that breathed life into poetry by bringing the elements of body, voice, and gestures into the textual form. In his expansive and thought-provoking volume Poetry on Stage: The Theatre of the Italian Neo-Avant-Garde, Gianluca Rizzo articulates the visceral and intellectual synergy between poetry and theatre and elucidates the collaborative efforts that flourished among playwrights, directors, actors, and audiences. He stresses the poets’ insistence upon the improvisational freedom of the actors and highlights their sociopolitical objectives devoted to communal meaning-making. By reexamining the birth of Nuovo Teatro, Rizzo challenges the perceived divisions between poetry and theatre overall and critically bridges the purported gaps between the two artistic media. In the first chapter, Rizzo outlines the reasons why certain poets took to theatre as a means of sociopolitical expression by exploring the philosophical contentions that rose out of the Neoavanguardia. The author tackles questions that pertain to the functionality of literature with respect to the public, the “permeability between poetry and drama” (20), and how theatre as a medium promotes inclusivity for audiences through tactile and auditory modes of exchange that result in meaning-driven communal gatherings. -

Abstract This PhD thesis argues that, in the 1950s and 1960s, several Italian experimental writers developed photographic and cinematic modes of writing with the aim to innovate poetic form and content. By adopting an interdisciplinary framework, which intersects literary studies with visual and intermedial studies, this thesis analyses the works of Antonio Porta, Amelia Rosselli, and Edoardo Sanguineti. These authors were particularly sensitive to photographic and cinematic media, which inspired their poetics. Antonio Porta’s poetry, for instance, develops in dialogue with the photographic culture of the time, and makes references to the photographs of crime news. -

C iò ha condizionato anche la rappresentazione del soggetto nelle poetiche degli autori suoi rappresentanti . L’ identificazione di un i o unitario – paradigma della poesia italiana primonovecentesca – nelle oper e neoavanguardiste si trasforma , infatti , in una spregiudicata ‘ riduzione del l’io ’ , sottendente mutazion i e ibridazion i . Si può parlare di uno scomporsi / mostrarsi del soggetto nelle sue parti corporali – an che quelle più celate , interne e sgradevoli – coadiuvante nuovi rapporti con l’esterno – di carat tere fisico, sessuale, violento – per una motivazione , come suddetto, primariamente crit ica . Tra gli esponenti della Neoavanguardia , autore che già dagli anni Sessanta è definibile come “ poeta del corpo ” 2 è certamente Antonio Porta. Recensioni John Picchione. The New Avant-Garde in Italy. Theoretical Debate and Poetic Practices. Toronto Buffalo London: University of Toronto Press, 2004. Pp. ix, 250. ISBN 0802089941. $ 50 US. The Italian neoavanguardia or New Avant-garde has received considerable critical attention in Italy since it burst onto the cultural scene in the early part of the 1960s, but it has infrequently been the subject of scholarship in the English-speak- ing world. One of the possible reasons for this neglect might well be the very poet- ics and practices produced by the poets and theoreticians of this group. John Picchione's book makes a fundamentally important contribution to the study of the Italian lyric in the mid-twentieth century and will certainly go a long way to redressing this imbalance. The first two of the book's ten chapters are devoted to providing a historical and theoretical context for the work of poets appearing in the 1961 anthology / Novissimi — Poesie per gli anni '60, and for the writers who contributed to the cul- tural debate in the pages of such journals as // Verri and // Menabò. These intel- lectuals constituted the so-called Gruppo 63. An entire chapter is then dedicated to each of the five poets anthologized in I Novissimi, namely, Alfredo Giuliani, Elio Pagliarani, Edoardo Sanguineti, Antonio Porta, and Nanni Balestrini, with the final two chapters given over to examining the experimentation in concrete and verbal-visual poetry that occurred in Italy during the course of the same decade, and to evaluating the overall impact of the movement on Italian literature and society. -

Antonio Porta: Poeta Di “Ricerca Inesausta” (1935 – 1989)
Antonio Porta: poeta di “ricerca inesausta” (1935 – 1989) Con imperdonabile ritardo dedico le pagine che seguono ad Antonio Porta (1935-1989), indiscusso protagonista della stagione che ha posto le radici per il rinnovamento della letteratura italiana, in particolare sul versante delle poesia, ma con attenzione anche alla narrativa e al teatro: la stagione della Neoavanguardia, com’ è stata definita per indicare il suo aggancio con il lascito esplosivo delle avanguardie storiche. Il percorso letterario di Porta (all’anagrafe Leo Paolazzi), a partire dal suo inserimento fra i cinque poeti scelti da Alfredo Giuliani per l’antologia de “i Novissimi” pubblicata nel 1961, è stato lineare e coerente, anche nell’asprezza del confronto con gli esponenti del tradizionalismo simbolista o del post-ermetismo che riemergerà più o meno trionfante negli Anni Novanta, e con gli scrittori e critici “militanti” di ispirazione marxista, tanto da guadagnarne il rispetto. Non a caso Giovanni Raboni, solitamente non tenero con gli appartenenti alla cosiddetta Neoavanguardia, ha scritto di lui pochi giorni dopo la scomparsa: “… sembra quasi impossibile capire come un uomo tanto generoso, pronto in ogni istante a dilapidare per gli altri la propria forza, abbia - alla lettera - «trovato il tempo» di essere non solo nell'anima e nei gesti, ma anche sulla pagina, un grande poeta”. La precoce scomparsa di Antonio Porta non mancò di suscitare commenti e giudizi sulla sua opera poetica, in particolare sulle riviste letterarie “Testuale” e “Il Verri”, cui seguirono anni di colpevole silenzio, interrotto dalla pubblicazione di inediti e dalle riedizioni di alcune sue raccolte di versi, soprattutto per iniziativa della moglie Rosemary Liedl Porta, alla quale devo anch’io l’opportunità di pubblicare questo omaggio, con immagini e testi da lei inviatimi. -

Antonio Porta Antonio Porta par Antonio Porta : « Antonio Porta (nom de plume de Leo Paolazzi) est né à Vicence le 9 novembre 1935. Depuis 1936 il vit à Milan où il a fait toutes ses études. En novembre 1960, il a obtenu sa laurea de lettres modernes à l’Uni- versité Catholique avec une thèse sur La poésie de D’Annunzio vers 1900 et ses rapports avec d’autres poètes. En 1958 il est appelé à la rédaction de la revue Il verri sous la direction du professeur Luciano Anceschi. C’est au sein de cette expérience que naît l’anthologie désormais historique I Novissimi. Porta y participe avec ses réflexions et ses textes en compagnie d’Elio Pagliarani, d’Edoardo Sanguineti, d’Alfredo Giuliani et de Nanni Balestrini1. L’anthologie est publiée en mars 1961. Pour élargir l’expérience des Novissimi, le Gruppo 63 est fondé. Il rassemblera autour de lui toutes les forces de l’avant-garde italienne. Porta participe aux travaux du Gruppo 63 à Palerme, Reggio Emilia, La Spezia et Fano. Entre 1963 et 1967, Il s’associe à la rédaction de la revue de pointe de la nouvelle avant-garde : Malebolge, dont le siège se trouve à Reggio Emilia. Porta se consacre alors à la « poésie visuelle » et participe à plusieurs expositions à Padoue, Milan, Rome et Londres. L’œuvre la plus représentative de cette période est Zero, publiée en édition numérotée (1963). De 1956 à 1967, Porta travaille pour les maisons d’édition Rusconi et Paolazzi s.p.a. Milano dans le secteur des hebdomaires (Gioia, Gente, Rakam) et dans la section livres (il s’occupe des éditions de la revue Il verri) avec des tâches de coordination pour la production industrielle. -

Apparently in mid-sentence, as witty as ever, according to Rosanna Chiessi with whom he was walking. With Corrado peering over the wheel of his Mercedes (he was barely five-and- a-half feet tall), or seemingly trotting at my side, I discovered Italy. (He liked to tell people that I was his bodyguard.) Secret, mysterious, out-of-the-way, often-difficult-to-find- again Italy. I translated two of his books of poetry, two plays (adapted for radio), as well as numerous selections of poems, all the while struck by his wondrously comic and various imagination. Perhaps one may glimpse Corrado’s mind in the following bio note he wrote in 1989: “Corrado Costa are two brothers. They bear the same name. They have the same birth date, even if the term ‘brother’ arose from some quick thinking nine years later, unknown to their mother Maria Viappiani, and in the presence of their teacher Moser, Fifth Grade, Filippo Re Elementary School. First row on the left. First desk. The teacher seizes a lined notebook edition of the unpublished Rime in X and Y. In a loud voice, for the benefit of the whole class, the teacher expands on the theme of wasting time (read: poetry) and of poor application (read: literature). -
