PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 ROCKING THE CANON: HEAVY METAL AND CLASSICAL LITERATURE By Heather L. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal).

  • The Devil's Music
religions Article The Devil’s Music: Satanism and Christian Rhetoric in the Lyrics of the Swedish Heavy Metal Band Ghost P.C.J.M. (Jarell) Paulissen Department of Biblical Sciences and Church History, Tilburg School of Catholic Theology, P.O. Box 90153, 5000 LE Tilburg, The Netherlands; [email protected] Abstract: This paper is an inquiry into a contemporary heavy metal band from Sweden called Ghost. Ghost released its first studio album in 2010 and, while there is some discussion as to what their genre is exactly, they immediately became a rising star in the metal scene. Yet what is of particular interest from a storytelling point of view, especially with regard to theological answers to philosophical questions in popular culture, is that the band presents itself as a satanic version of the Catholic Church through their stage act and lyrics. This made me curious whether they are trying to convey a message and, if yes, what that message might be. For the present paper, I have focused on the latter by performing a non-exhaustive textual analysis of the lyrics in a selection of songs from each of the four studio albums released so far. Ghost turns Christian liturgy on its head by utilizing devout language that is normally reserved for God and Christ to describe Satan and the Antichrist, a strategy I have called the ”satanification” of Christian doctrine, and in doing so their songs evoke imagery of a satanic faith community at prayer. The band then uses this radical inversion of traditional Christian themes to criticize certain elements of society, especially those aspects they associate with organized religion.

  • Christian Heavy Metal Music, “Family Values,” and Youth Culture, 1984–1994
Metal Missionaries to the Nation | 103 Metal Missionaries to the Nation: Christian Heavy Metal Music, “Family Values,” and Youth Culture, 1984–1994 Eileen Luhr n June 26, 1987, members of the Christian metal band Stryken attended a Motley Crüe concert in San Antonio, Texas. It was not Ouncommon for Christian bands to attend secular concerts; indeed, many bands explained that they did so in order to keep current on musical trends. But Stryken arrived at the show ready for confrontation. According to the Christian metal magazine White Throne, the band, “wearing full suits of armor . and bearing a 14 x 8 foot wooden cross,” “stormed the doors of the arena, pushing through the crowds of teenagers and television cameras down the corridor towards the inlet to the main stage.” At this point, the “boys in armor” erected the cross and “began to preach to the massed [sic] of kids who were gathering all around.” The authorities quickly intervened, and, “ordered to remove ‘the cross’ or face arrest, the members of Stryken continued to speak openly about Jesus Christ, and were one by one hand-cuffed and forcibly removed from the arena.”1 Stryken’s actions—which invoked the persecuted early Christians described in the Acts of the Apostles—offer some insights into Christian metal during the 1980s. Motley Crüe’s music and the lifestyle of its members were designed to shock middle America, but the band had become one of the most successful acts of the 1980s. By upstaging Motley Crüe’s over-the-top behavior with their bold act, Stryken attempted to claim heavy metal’s reputation for outrageousness for Christianity.

EAST MEETS WEST IN MADISON: CHINESE SOPRANO POP STAR RUHAN JIA AND NEW YORK BASED ROCK BAND, EDISUN WILL PERFORM TO PROMOTE CROSS-CULTURAL COLLABORATION, MUSICAL ARTISTRY, AND INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY. A Madison Wisconsin Story Edisun front man, Ethan Isaac grew up in Madison, attending James Madison Memorial High School. While in high school, his first recording was with Butch Vig (producer of nirvana sonic youth smashing pumpkins, and foo fighters) at the legendary Smart Studios. Playing in various bands on the Madison music scene he often played at the once popular clubs O’caz Corral and Club de Wash. He later moved his band, Wooden, that formed in Madison Wisconsin, to NYC. They were to get involved in a much larger music market, playing clubs like CBGB’s, Irving Plaza, The Continental, and the like. After years of success in the New York music scene, with his band, Wooden, Ethan found himself in the west village, NYC, on September 11th watching the attack on the Trade Towers. Heeding the word to evacuate the NYC area, Ethan managed to escape in his truck, while moving barricades, and maneuvering through chaotic, NYC law enforced streets…. eventually he made his way to the parkway, where he reached his cabin in the Catskills. Moved by the incredible effects, and magnitude of the tragedy, Ethan wrote a song called “Into the Sunlight” which lyrically reflects his experiences on 9/11. This would change his music career dramatically. His story, and song gets national press. And is discovered by the U.S. Armed Forces Entertainment Division (AFE).

A műfaj a nemzetközi szakirodalom- ban is sokkal ritkábban fordul elő a többi zenei stílushoz viszonyítva (pl. Wal- ser 1993, 2005), igazából akár mellőzöttnek is tekinthető (lásd Brown 2004). A magyar kutatásokban, különösen azok esetében, amelyek a mai ifjúsági A szubkultúrákra fókuszáltak, nyilvánvaló és állandó a jelenléte, mivel a zenei preferenciák által meghatározott szubkultúrák között már az 1980-as évektől ott vannak – könnyen felismerhetően, néha látványosan – a fémzene ked- velői, akikre általában a „rockerek” gyűjtőfogalma, ritkábban „metálosok” megnevezés alatt találunk rá (Rácz 1998, Szapu 2002, Szapu szerk. 2004, Fe- rencz 2007, Sólyom 2007). A többnyire hosszú hajú, sajátos mintázatú fekete pólót, farmert vagy bőrnadrágot és kabátot, különböző kiegészítőket viselő fiatalok a heavy metal és számos alműfaja iránti rajongásukkal, a zenéhez kapcsolódó fogyasztásukkal sajátos kulturális csoportosulást képviseltek/ képviselnek, amely a többi szubkultúrához hasonlóan láthatóvá vált a tár- sadalmi térben. E zenei szubkultúra teljes körű bemutatására itt nincs lehetőség, ennek megfelelően egyetlen résztémára szeretnék kitérni a következőkben, éspedig a műfaj legfontosabb, legnépszerűbb magyar nyelvű folyóiratának az elem- zésére vállalkozom.
