It was, until a decade ago, home mainly to art and antiques dealers. In 2006 Marc Jacobs opened his first store on Mount Street, and this unlocked the floodgates to global designers seeking to capitalize on the area’s blossoming cachet. It is seen as a complementary address to Bond Street, and also an exclusive residential address for discreet money, whether old or new. Today, the Mount Street Enclave is considered the beating heart of Central London, with Mayfair House set to lead a new chapter in the area’s rich history.

Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Chanel are among major brands plotting such retail ventures in the coming months, characterizing them as a way to tap into a new customer base, create excitement — and capture extra sales in a tough economy. “Even if it has been done to address a problem, it can become an opportunity,” said Patrick Thomas, chief executive officer at Hermès International, which on Wednesday will open at 63 Main Street in East Hampton, N.Y., for a four-month stint. “It’s also a very See Temporary, Page12 PHOTO BY JOHN AQUINO PHOTO BY 2 WWD, TUESDAY, MAY 19, 2009 WWD.COM Allen, American Apparel Settle for $5M By Matthew Lynch cover the Allen settlement.

A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF ADVERTISER INFLUENCE ON EDITORIAL CONTENT IN FASHION MAGAZINES by CANDACE CAMILLE WALTON (Under the Direction of Jose F. Blanco) ABSTRACT The purpose of this exploratory research is to address and analyze the amount of influence that advertisers have over editorial content in the media, specifically men‟s and women‟s fashion magazines. The sample consisted of a total of sixteen fashion magazines, with four different magazine titles (two targeted towards women and two targeted towards men) representing two different publishers. A survey was also conducted with a member of the editorial staff of one of the publications in the sample. Descriptive statistics (percentages) and SPSS correlation tests were used to test relationships among the variables and answer the research questions. The results yielded percentages that pointed towards editorial independence from advertisers, however, significant correlation was found between advertisers and editorial content as well.
