Nacido en Baltimore (Maryland, Estados Unidos) Marc Mellits es uno de los principales compositores de su generación. Su estilo musical único es una combinación ecléctica de ritmos enérgicos, lirismo arrollador y orquestaciones llenas de color, que genera una comunicación directa con el escucha. La música de Mellits, que se interpreta frecuentemente alrededor del mundo, es descrita como visceral, que crea una conexión profunda con la audiencia: «Una música sensual e inteligente a partes iguales; pude observar a los miembros del público balanceándose, haciendo pequeños movimientos con sus manos» (New York Press). Empezó a componer muy temprano, paralelamente a sus primeras lecciones de piano, a la edad de seis años. Realizó estudios en Eastman School of Music, Yale School of Music, Cornell University y Tanglewood. Mellits es un miniaturista, entendiendo por esto alguien que compone obras a partir de pequeños movimientos o secciones contrastantes. Su música es ecléctica, colorida y transmite siempre sensación de movimiento. Sus obras han sido interpretadas y comisionadas por importantes ensambles e intérpretes alrededor del mundo, como Kronos Quartet, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Sergio y Odair Assad, Bang on a Can AII-Stars, Eliot Fisk, Andrew Russo, Canadian Brass, Nexus Percussion, Debussy Quartet, Real Qu iet, New Music Detroit, Musique En Roue Libre, Fiari Ensemble, The Society for New Music, Lemur, Kathy Supove, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra y Dog's of Desire de la Albany Symphony. Mellits es cofundador y miembro activo del Common Sense Composer's Collective, grupo que tiene como objetivo la búsqueda de nuevas maneras de colaborar con toda clase de ensambles. Es director y teclista de su propio ensamble, The Mellits Consort, dedicado a la interpretación de su música. Gracias al trabajo de este grupo, Mellits recibió en 2004 el premio de la Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Era como si trabaj áramos juntos desde hacía mucho tiempo. Una agrupación verdaderamente notable.» Jeroen va n Veen (Holanda) Creado en Bogotá, Colombia, en el año 2006 por Adriana Vásquez, Eduardo Caicedo y Antonio Correa, el ensamble Als Eco se dedica a la interpretación de música contemporánea con particular énfasis en el minimalismo. En su repertorio se encuentran obras de Simeon ten Holt, Steve Reich, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Philip Glass, Jacob TV, Louis Andriessen, Marc Mellits, David Lang , Evan Ziporyn y Michael Gordon, además de obras escritas por algunos de sus integrantes. Hacia el año 2011 , el ensamble inició una etapa de expansión al ver que su instrumentación original empezaba a quedarse corta. En la actualidad, Als Eco cuenta con dieciséis músicos a su disposición, algunos de ellos miembros estables, otros, miembros "flotantes", todos con distintos antecedentes musicales, desde la música improvisada, el jazz y la música popular hasta la música clásica. El ensamble cree que la facilidad que tiene el hombre para vincular un sonido con otro no es un capricho: es una ley de la naturaleza. Así mismo, considera que el pulso estable es un elemento fundamental para vincularse emocionalmente a una composición musical. A Als Eco no le interesa tocar música interesante, su interés primordial es tocar música que no plantee esa infranqueable barrera entre el compositor y el público, barrera que muchas composiciones recientes se han encargado de construir. Gallagher empezó como músico de rock, pero su apetito musical lo condujo rápidamente al estudio del jazz y eventualmente de la guitarra clásica. Ganador de numerosos premios de interpretación desde sus épocas de estudiante en el Conservatorio de Winsconsin y la Julliard School, Gallagher estudió con 5 grandes maestros de la guitarra, como Benjamin Verdery, Sharon lsbin, Albert Fuller, Joaquin Fabra y Ramesh Balsekar. Fue ganador en 1993 del primer lugar del concurso de la Guitar Foundation of America, de la Artists 1 nternational Competition y, en 1994, de la American String Teachers Association. En 1997 se convirtió en el primer estadounidense ganador del primer lugar en el prestigioso concurso de guitarra Francisco Tárrega , en España. Ha dado conciertos y clases magistrales en varios países del mundo, entre ellos España, Alemania, Suecia, Grecia, Turquía, Brasil e Inglaterra. Su grabación para NAXOS Records Guitar Recital- M u sic from the Reinassance and Baroque ("Recital de Guitarra: Música del Renacimiento y el Barroco") fue aclamada como «una de las mejores grabaciones de NAXOS dedicada a la guitarra» por el Classical Guitar Magazine en el año 2000. Kevin Gallagher es miembro del Mellits Consort y es director y fundador del grupo Electric Kompany. Mulroy Civic Center in Syracuse, New York Copyright/Publisher: Dacia Music The composer writes: “I composed my Octet during the winter of 2009-10. The majority of the music was written at the Banff Music Center, where I was invited to be an artist-in-residence in January 2010. The incredibly beautiful mountainous surroundings of the Banff Centre had a profound impact on me. My composing studio overlooked the Canadian Rockies, pristine and covered with snow and ice. The weather was brutal, with a level of cold I had never felt. This, juxtaposed with the astounding frozen beauty all around me, provided the inspiration for the music. My studio had a glorious enormous picture window that overlooked the Rockies. The music came quick and it came easy; before I knew it I had material for all four movements. The outer movements are aggressive and have the biting cold I felt, while the second and third movements reflect more of the warmth I felt inside, sharing my thoughts with a wide range of artists who were also in residence.” About the composer: Composer Marc Mellits is one of the leading American composers of his generation, enjoying hundreds of performances throughout the world every year, making him one of the most performed composers in the United States.

Messer-Kruse Graduate Faculty Representative Marilyn Shrude Kenneth Thompson © 2016 Octavio Más-Arocas All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Emily Freeman Brown, Advisor Despite great efforts by American composers, their prodigious musical output has been mostly ignored by American orchestras. Works by living American composers account for an annual average of only 6% of all the music performed by American orchestras, while works by living composers of all nationalities combined totals a meager 11%. This study examines some of the historical breaking points in the relationship between American orchestras and new music. Five exceptional orchestras are cited, the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, and the Seattle Symphony, that are thriving while successfully incorporating new music in their programing. This document draws attention to the significant role new music can play in the future of American orchestras by analyzing the programing of new music and projects that support composers, identifying innovative orchestral leaders and composers who have successfully served in advisory positions, and by recognizing and discussing the many creative strategies orchestras are using today. This document attempts to increase the understanding of the need for change in concert programing while highlighting several thrilling examples of innovative strategies that are making an essential contribution to the future of orchestral music.
