  • Apostolic Lines of Succession-10-2018
Apostolic Lines of Succession for ++Michael David Callahan, DD, OCR, OCarm. The Catholic Church in America “Have you an apostolic succession? Unfold the line of your bishops.” Tertullian, 3rd century A.D. A special visible expression of Apostolic Succession is given in the consecration/ ordination of a bishop through the laying on of hands by other bishops who have, themselves, been ordained in the same manner through a succession of bishops leading back to the apostles of Jesus. The role of the bishop must always be understood within the context of the authentic handing on of the faith from one generation to the next generation of the whole Church, beginning with the Christian community of the time of the Apostles. Thus, as the Church is the continuation of the apostolic community, so the bishops are the continuation of the ministry of the college of the apostles of Jesus within that apostolic community. It is essentially collegial rather than monarchical. This tradition is affirmed in the teaching ministry of Church leadership, and authentically celebrated in the sacraments, with particular attention to the sacrament of holy orders (ordination) and the laying on of hands. Apostolic Succession is the belief of Catholic Christians that the bishops are successors of the original apostles of Jesus. This is understood as the bishops being ordained into the episcopal collegium or “sacramental order.” As bishops are by tradition consecrated by at least three other bishops, the actual number of lists of succession can become quite substantial. Listed here are three lines of succession: 1. From Saints Paul and Linus Succession through Archbishop Baladad 2.

PAROLE CHIAVE: Giansenismo, Tasso, sublime, sensismo, Pier Jacopo Martelli ABSTRACT: The contribution focuses on the role of reformer of Cornelio Bentivoglio of Aragon, prince of the Church, scholar and protector of writers. The high prelate from Ferrara, after having animated the revival of the Italian theater, got into personal competition against the criticisms made by the French to the Italian epic with the translation of the Thebaid of Statius. The vulgarization re-proposed the Tasso and Renaissance model but updated to a contemporary taste, that refers, on the one hand, the debt with the poetics of the sublime pseudo-Longinian; on the other, to political current events, because of an “ideological” reading of the ancient poem, which alludes to the lacerations made in the body of Christianity by the reformed doctrines.

You have in›uenced my diligence by your expressions of praise, both in your own name and in the names of your most learned friends (whom you also have in very large number). As a result, I feel that I am much more eager to pursue the investigation set forth on this subject; I would already have completed it had the abundance of waters from heaven not shown itself opposed to my own watery task. But you should not think that I have been completely idle: indeed, although I was not able to approach for a second time the sources of the Marcia and Claudia, at some distance from me, and not able therefore to follow up my ideas by surer rea- soning, not uselessly, perhaps, will I show you that I have been engaged in the more immediate neighborhood of that aqueduct introduced by Pope Sixtus and called the Acqua Felice from his own name before his ponti‹- 19 Aqueduct Hunting in the Seventeenth Century: Raffaele Fabretti's De aquis et aquaeductibus veteris Romae Harry B.

  • Characteristics of Baroque Solid Space in the Perspectival Tabernacle of Bitonti and Borromini in Bologna Giuseppe Amoruso
1 / 2017 Characteristics of Baroque Solid Space in the Perspectival Tabernacle of Bitonti and Borromini in Bologna Giuseppe Amoruso Abstract The research presents an analysis of the tabernacle designed in Bologna by Giovanni Maria da Bitonto who, with Francesco Bor- romini, created the perspectival gallery for the Spada Palace in Rome. The tabernacle perspective works as a projective system which accelerates the natural perspective perception and modifies environmental and spatial features, of the built scenography. The construction technique is complex if applied to architectural space: Donato Bramante realized it, for the first time, in Milan, in the choir of Santa Maria at San Satiro. The spatial fruition of perspective, usually linked to central perspective or to psychological and perceptive phenomenon, became ‘real’. The projective principle is the one known as ‘relief-perspective’, or designed to be used as a scenography or temporary installation. The survey of the tabernacle, in the church of San Paolo Maggiore in Bologna, reveals a small illusory space and also introduces a true protagonist of solid perspective applications, Giovanni Maria Bitonti. The research presents a graphic study of the perspective concept housed in the National Archive of Bologna and an accurate reconstruction of the solid perspective, using the most advanced techniques of digital documentation. The drawing examined has a graphic scale, in Bolognese feet; the drawing is of the model representing real architecture, making it comparable with the drawing of Spada Gallery conserved in the Albertina Library in Vienna. Keywords: solid perspective, Giovanni Maria Bitonti, Francesco Borromini, solid homology, illusory space Introduction In 1666, the Bolognese Antonio Masini used, for the first dows, perspectives, and similar things, which made it double” time, the term “quadrature,” in referring to a perspective ap- [Neppi 1975, p.
