Oceans are of great importance in ecological (climate regulation, biodiversity) and societal (economic activities, environmental services, and residence) terms. Healthy oceans are therefore fundamental to achieving global sustainability. The European Union has identified ‘blue growth’, or the sustainable use of the oceans, as a core societal challenge for its research programmes (e.g. Horizon 2020). However, at present, we still have a challenge to promote ocean literacy in order to help citizens understand the influence of the oceans on our lives and the impacts of our behaviour on it. Following this approach, an educational movement, called Ocean Literacy, started over 10 years ago in the USA. The main stimulus for this stream was the recognition of a clear absence of marine knowledge within the general population (Aqua TT, 2015). In this sense, given our dependence on the health of the ocean for a wide range of ecosystem services, the 'meaning' and 'attachment' to the largest ecosystem on Earth must be assumed extensively by various sectors. As a key interface, marine tourism has a key role to play in achieving this. Tourism research of twenty first century is defined by the motivations, behaviours and choices of the travellers due to the fact that recreation, at present, is based on the experience (Holbrook & Hirschman, 1982; Álvarez Sousa, 2004). As a result, within the context of the Experience Economy (Pine & Gilmore, 1998), 'place meaning' contributes to the value and significance of the setting through the cognitive concepts or/and beliefs of the individual (Stedman, 2002). Concurrently, the 'place attachment' reflects the degree of bond to the setting (Kyle et al., 2003). Regarding this, the present study asks, how can underwater marine ecotourism contribute towards the place-based marine environmental awareness through Ocean Literacy? To answer this main question, an ethnographic study with emic perspective was implemented in a case study in Mallorca (The Balearic Islands, Spain). The fieldwork was conducted during six months (during the tourist season of 2016), using participant observation and semi-structured and unstructured interviews with divers, staff and the potential stakeholders network (science, government, NGO's, and professional associations). iv The scenario identified was an industry involved in a transitional period. It is suggested that this is due to the fact the activity is still conducted as a ‘sport’ but where the tourism is now the main client. At the same time, the experience is based on ‘what you see' but without a systematic transfer of knowledge, and where the staff are poorly trained in heritage interpretation and communication skills. Consequently, the entire structure loses the opportunity to connect the divers to Mediterranean Sea through a ‘sense of place’. Nevertheless, suitable conditions for further development are present: motivated staff; a clear demand of ocean knowledge from tourists; proper facilities; and an active network of knowledge production close to them. As a result, the study suggests a structure to put in place an Ocean Literacy stream in the current recreational diving industry in order to contribute to the aspiration of improved global ocean citizenship. Named for its strong tidal currents and rocky reefs, the waters surrounding Race Rocks (XwaYeN) are a showcase for Pacific marine life. This marine life is the result of oceanographic conditions supplying the Race Rocks (XwaYeN) area with a generous stream of nutrients and high levels of dissolved oxygen. These factors contribute to the creation of an ecosystem of high biodiversity and biological productivity. In 1980, the province of British Columbia, under the authority of the provincial Ecological Reserves Act, established the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. This provided protection of the terrestrial natural and cultural heritage values (nine islets) and of the ocean seabed (to the 20 fathoms/36.6 meter contour line).

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In the last few winters, sharks have been aggregating near the Israeli Mediterranean coast, at a specific point, near Hadera power station. This unusual phenomenon has fascinated residents, visitors, kayakers, divers and swimmers. We analyse the effects of this intense human interest on the sharks, using contingent behaviour, in Hadera and in Ashkelon, where sharks are present but not the infrastructure for their observation. We also report on changes in shark behaviour due to change in tourism intensity. We find a change of about ILS 4.1 million annually for both sites but a larger individual consumer surplus in Hadera, where sharks are currently observable. Touristic intensity crosses the threshold level by about 12% and making the socio-equilibrium sustainable for both humans and sharks would have a social cost of ILS 0.157 million.     DRAFT Sustainable Tourism for Marine Recreation Providers Wolcott Henry photo The Coral Reef Alliance: Coral Parks Program Education Series ©2004 Sustainable Tourism Introduction In this era of the global economy, tourism has become a primary source of revenue for many regions of the world, generating nearly $500 billion in worldwide revenues in 2001, and continuing to grow (WTO, 2001). The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) facilitated a study that points out that the tourism industry now represents more than 10% of the world’s gross domestic product (UNEP, 2002). While tourism brings significant benefits for both local and global economies, its rapid growth and development in recent decades has caused widespread social and environmental change across the globe, particularly in popular coastal resort destinations. In contrast, the concept of sustainable tourism is now seen as a way to promote socio-economic development in a given region while simultaneously protecting local culture and the natural environment. In order to address these issues and how they impact coral reefs, the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) has compiled this Sustainable Tourism for Marine Recreation Providers handbook. In an effort to promote sustainable tourism, the information contained in this handbook highlights some of the current environmental problems associated with tourism growth and development, and promotes practical solutions for marine recreation providers to adopt good environmental practices.     Scuba Diving Tourism is being underestimated Weak links between divers and local communities, governance issues and lack of support from authorities and the scientific community - these emerged during the Green Bubbles project that shed light on problems preventing scuba diving tourism systems from functioning as they should. Scuba diving tourism encourages conservation and supports local communities. It also generates billions worldwide and contributes heavily towards economies - yet its potential as a sustainable form of tourism is not being recognised enough. As a result, scuba diving tourism systems rarely function the way they should - and the scuba diving industry, and its stakeholders, are suffering the consequences. The EU-funded project Green Bubbles set out to address this issue by shedding light on what is affecting the healthy functioning of SCUBA Ecosystem. The goal of the project was to understand the problem and propose solutions to stimulate the growth of the scuba diving tourism industry. Understanding its interactions with environmental, social, and economic factors is important in the context of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), where dynamics between role players are complex. The project set out to explore two case studies from two completely different realties: the Portofino MPA in Italy and the Ponta do Ouro MPA in the developing country of Mozambique. Local dive operators from both countries were invited to share their views on scuba diving tourism industry during focus groups and interviews. Interestingly the replies, obtained from different corners of the globe, showed strong commonalities: Governance issues Operators in Italy and Mozambique felt that governance issues are hampering the functioning of the scuba diving tourism industry.

WILLIAMS A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN BIOLOGY SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE Dr. Laurie Raymundo, Chair Dr. Alexander Kerr, Member Dr. Romina King, Member UNIVERSITY OF GUAM DECEMBER 2019 Abstract Coral reefs are a critical resource for the culture and economy of the American territory of Guam, but the island’s coral reef resources are increasingly imperiled by climate change, particularly bleaching caused by rising seawater temperatures. Severe bleaching events in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017 have caused mass mortality of corals and made evident the critical need to reduce local stressors to protect the future of Guam’s reefs. An estimated 300,000 people scuba dive on Guam’s reefs annually, but the impacts of these divers are unknown. This study examines the impacts of scuba diving activity on highly trafficked coral reefs and tests a low-effort approach to reducing diver impacts by using a coral-safe diving reminder. Comparisons of benthic cover, genus diversity, and health impacts did not reveal any significant differences between pairs of often dived and rarely dived sites, although it is likely that the damage and mortality caused by recent bleaching events may be masking the smaller impacts of scuba divers. A single-sentence coral-safe diving reminder delivered as part of the standard pre-dive briefing was highly effective in reducing both accidental and intentional contacts with reef. Divers who received a coral-safe diving reminder made 72% fewer contacts with the reef, and about 60% fewer contacts with live corals specifically, than divers who did not receive a reminder.

However, technological constraints (e.g., battery life and limited storage memory) typically limit deployment times to <2 h making it very difficult to capture the presence of marine species, including rare and elusive ones. We developed an extended duration (24 h) BRUV to enable fisheries-independent surveying of a pelagic shark population in the western Mediterranean. Video data revealed seven visits (three nocturnal, four diurnal) by blue sharks (Prionace glauca) over a period of 1355 h. In the future, this cost-effective device could be fitted with a wireless video transmitter to provide real-time observations of marine animals for scientific or ecotourism purposes.

Some of these studies have investigated competitiveness from a demand perspective based on destination attributes, but these attributes were derived initially from a supplier’s perspective. This study takes an alternative perspective; that the ability to provide superior value to the customer is critical to destination competitiveness. It addresses a gap in the literature of destination competitiveness by focusing on tourists’ perspectives of value.
