BURKHOLDER is assistant professor of history in the Department of History and Political Science at Grace College (Winona Lake, IN). He specializes in American religious history with a focus on pietist groups, such as the Moravians, the evangelical tradition, and various forms of Anabaptism. JAMES ALEXANDER DUN is a lecturer and departmental representative in the history department at Princeton University. His current book project is Dangerous Intelligence: Slavery, Saint-Domingue, and the Haitian Revolution in the Early American Republic. JOHNATHAN D. SASSI is associate professor of history at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York, and a member of the faculty of the PhD program in history at the CUNY Graduate Center. This “rends in Pieces all the Barriers between Virtue and Vice”: Tennentists, Moravians, and the Antinomian Threat in the Delaware Valley N THE SUMMER OF 1745, Gilbert Tennent, one of the middle colonies’ leading revivalist preachers, was preparing a sermon in his IPhiladelphia study during a fierce thunderstorm, when a bolt of light- ning struck the house and sent a surge of electricity through his body, blowing out the soles of his shoes and melting the buckles.1 Although Tennent would later explain this frightening experience as a random act I would like to thank the Pietism Studies Group, which meets each year in conjunction with the American Historical Association, for inviting me to present a paper on this material for the 2008 annual meeting in Washington, DC. This article is a revised version of that presentation delivered as “Anglo-Moravians and Tennentist Propaganda: The Nature of Moravian–New Light Relations in the Delaware Valley, 1741–1748.” I am also indebted to Paul Peucker and Lanie Graf for their assistance at the Moravian Archives in Bethlehem, Lisa Jacobson at the Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia, as well as several people who have reviewed and offered comments on this piece. I am, however, solely responsible for those deficiencies that remain. 1 Gilbert Tennent (1703–1764) was arguably the most significant revivalist in the mid-Atlantic colonies. He was instrumental in creating a temporary split with “Old Side” Presbyterians in 1741 and best known for his controversial 1739 sermon, “The Danger of an Unconverted Ministry.” THE PENNSYLVANIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY Vol. CXXXV, No. 1 ( January 2011) 6 JARED S. BURKHOLDER January of God, Moravians in Philadelphia interpreted the lightning bolt as a spe- cific demonstration of divine “warning” thrown down on one of their most vocal “enemies.”2 In fact, according to a Reformed opponent of the Moravians, the leader of the whole Moravian enterprise, Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf, had predicted as much three years earlier.3 Although coming after the fires of the Great Awakening had cooled, the Moravian interpretation of Tennent’s encounter with a bolt of lightning is testament to debates that surged to the fore during the Great Awakening and that revolved around Moravian activity in the Delaware Valley.4 The Moravians of the eighteenth century were the theological descen- dents of the Unitas Fratrum or “United Brethren.” As a remnant of the followers of Jan Hus, the “Unity” faced legal prosecution under Catholic authority and fled north from the region of Moravia. Finding safety in Saxony on the estate of Zinzendorf, a nobleman with a pietist orientation, the tradition was revived there in 1727 in a community they called “Herrnhut.” Moravians began visiting Pennsylvania in 1736 and estab- lished the administrative center of Bethlehem, along the Lehigh River, in 1742. These pietists, most of whom were German speaking, faced oppo- sition on a number of fronts.     With a Little Help from the Friends: The Quaker and Tactical Contexts of Anthony Benezet’s Abolitionist Publishing N THE MORNING OF NOVEMBE R 14, 1766, some P hiladelphia Quakers hastened to prepare a parcel to put in the hands of John OGr iffith, a traveling minister who was about to board a ship that day and retur n to England. Griffith had arrived in Philadelphia in S eptember 1765, and over the next year he visited Q uaker meetings up and down the Atlantic seaboard from North Carolina to Ne w Hampshire , taking their spiritual pulse , preac hing the gospel, and call ing for a revival of vital piety among Fr iends. By September 1766 he f elt that his wor k was finished, and so he informed the ministers and elders of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting on the twenty-se venth of that month of his desire to retur n home. Three men were duly appointed to write a certifi- cate for Griffith “Expressive of Our Unity with his Gospel L abours among us,” one of whom was Anthony Benezet, the schoolmaster, reformer, and pamphleteer.1 Benezet was attending the Yearly Meeting as a representative of the Burlington (New Jersey) Quarterly Meeting along with his friends John Smith, a councilor in New Jersey’s royal government, This work was supported (in part) by a grant from The City University of New York PSC-CUNY Research Award Program.     Abstract Jefferson’s Sons: Notes on the State of Virginia and Virginian Antislavery, 1760–1832 by Cara J. Rogers This dissertation examines the fascinating early life of Thomas Jefferson’s book, Notes on the State of Virginia, from its innocuous composition in the early 1780s to its appropriation as a political weapon by both pro and antislavery forces in the early nineteenth century. Initially written as a statistical introduction to Virginia for French readers, Jefferson’s book evolved into an intellectual tour de force that covered almost all facets of the state’s natural and political realms. As part of an antislavery education strategy, Jefferson also decided to include a treatise on the nature of racial difference, as well as a manifesto on the corrupting power of slavery in a republic and a plan for emancipation and colonization. In consequence, his book—for better or worse—defined the boundaries of future debates over the place of black people in American society. Although historians have rightly criticized Jefferson for his racism and failure to free his own slaves, his antislavery intentions for the Notes have received only cursory notice, partly because the original manuscript was not available for detailed examination until recently. By analyzing Jefferson’s complex revision process, this dissertation traces the ways in which his views on race and slavery evolved as he considered how best to persuade younger slaveholders to embrace emancipation. It then moves beyond Jefferson to examine contemporary responses to the Notes from white and black intellectuals and politicians, concluding with an attempt by Jefferson’s grandson to implement elements of the Notes’ emancipation plan during Virginia’s 1831-32 slavery debates.

    "<L/T T>iary of Trifling Occurrences" Philadelphia, 1776-1778 ERHAPS the most eminently suitable, satisfactory, and gener- ally pleasing Philadelphia wedding of 1772 took place on P St. Patrick's Day, when Sarah Logan became the wife of Thomas Fisher. As representative members of two of the wealthiest and most respected Quaker families in the city, bride and groom had so much in common that all their friends prophesied and accurately forecast an ideally happy union. Thomas, ten years senior to his twenty-one-year-old bride, was the oldest son of Joshua Fisher, a leading merchant and shipowner. Together with his brothers Samuel, Miers, and Jabez, Thomas was a partner with his father in the formidable firm of Joshua Fisher & Sons. Marriages with prominent families strengthened the Fishers' position. Thomas' sister Lydia married Thomas Gilpin, canal pioneer and an original member of the American Philosophical Society, and, except for Jabez, who died a bachelor, all of Thomas' brothers mar- ried well. This circumstance, allied with business ability and dis- tinguished character, established the Fisher clan, which had come to Philadelphia as recently as 1746, as one of the community's out- standing families before the outbreak of the Revolution. Thomas Fisher was a small man with an easy manner, capable in all that he undertook, and, ultimately, the head of the Fisher firm. He carried a Malacca cane and dressed remarkably well, usually wearing a square-cut coat, knee breeches with silver buckles, and a shovel hat. Handsome and gentlemanly, Thomas was a good Quaker, although not a particularly strict one.

Kershner Abstract In “To Renew the Covenant”: Religious Themes in Eighteenth-Century Quaker Abolitionism, Jon R. Kershner argues that Quakers adhered to a providential view of history, which motivated their desire to take a corporate position against slavery. Antislavery Quakers believed God’s dealings with them, for good or ill, were contingent on their faithful- ness. Their history of deliverance from persecution, the liberty of conscience they experienced in the British colonies, and the ethics of the Golden Rule formed a cov- enantal relationship with God that challenged notions of human bondage. Kershner traces the history of abolitionist theologies from George Fox and William Edmundson in the late seventeenth century to Paul Cuffe and Benjamin Banneker in the early nineteenth century. It covers the Germantown Protest, Benjamin Lay, John Woolman, Anthony Benezet, William Dillwyn, Warner Mifflin, and others who offered religious arguments against slavery. It also surveys recent developments in Quaker antislavery studies. It’s exceptionally well written and researched. Mifflin is largely a forgotten figure who needs to be rec- ognized along with John Woolman and Anthony Benezet. Mifflin was possibly the most important American antislavery activist of the late- eighteenth century. Born in 1745, Mifflin grew up on Virginia’s Eastern Shore where he watched his father acquire tracts of land to be worked by their many slaves. As a young man Mifflin became an important landowner and owned slaves himself. At over six foot six, he stood out among his peers, not only for his height but as a wealthy landowner who spoke well.
