may 2012 NOBODY LOVES YOU A World Premiere Musical Comedy Welcome to The Old Globe began its journey with Itamar Moses and Gaby Alter’s Nobody Loves You in 2010, and we are thrilled to officially launch the piece here in its world premiere production. The Globe has a longstanding relationship with Itamar Moses. He was a Globe Playwright-in-Residence in 2007-2008 when we produced the world premieres of his plays Back Back Back and The Four of Us. Nobody Loves You is filled with the same HENRY DIROCCO HENRY whip-smart humor and insight that mark Itamar’s other works, here united with Gaby’s vibrant music and lyrics. Together they have created a piece that portrays, with a tremendous amount of humor and heart, the quest for love in a world in which romance is often commercialized. Just across Copley Plaza, the Globe is presenting another musical, the acclaimed The Scottsboro Boys, by musical theatre legends John Kander and Fred Ebb. We hope to see you back this summer for our 2012 Summer Shakespeare Festival. Under Shakespeare Festival Artistic Director Adrian Noble, this outdoor favorite features Richard III, As You Like It and Inherit the Wind in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. The summer season will also feature Michael Kramer’s Divine Rivalry as well as Yasmina Reza’s Tony Award-winning comedy God of Carnage. As always, we thank you for your support as we continue our mission to bring San Diego audiences the very best theatre, both classical and contemporary. Michael G. THEATER REVIEW; Decades of Songs From William Finn, and Not Just in Falsetto - New York Times 01/09/2008 09:06 AM August 27, 2006 THEATER REVIEW; Decades of Songs From William Finn, and Not Just in Falsetto By ANITA GATES The first time I heard of William Finn was in the spring of 1981, when he had written the book, music and lyrics for a daring musical called ''March of the Falsettos.'' It was playing in a tiny space at Playwrights Horizons in New York, and critics were talking about the discovery of a major talent. I rushed out to see the show, which was about a man who left his wife to make a life with another man. I thought it was quite good, with flashes of brilliance. Last Tuesday night I saw ''Make Me a Song,'' an evening of Mr. Finn's music, at Theaterworks. It was really good, with long stretches of brilliance. Actually, this highly entertaining production, conceived and directed by Rob Ruggiero with musical direction by Michael Morris, is two shows in one. In Act I, the four-person cast -- Sandy Binion, Joe Cassidy, Adam Heller (who did ''March of the Falsettos'' and ''Falsettoland'' at Hartford Stage) and Sally Wilfert -- perform mostly humorous numbers. In Act II, they turn to Mr. Finn's more serious songs. By the time they get to the heartbreaking ''Anytime (I Am There),'' a dead mother's message to the child she has left behind, sung by Ms. Wilfert, virtually anyone who has ever cried in a theater would be at least a little teary. -

BRENT BARRETT Brent Barrett Is No Stranger to the Stages of Broadway
BRENT BARRETT Brent Barrett is no stranger to the stages of Broadway, the West End, concert halls, recording studios or television. He was most recently seen on Broadway reprising his role as Billy Flynn in the Tony Award-winning hit, Chicago - The Musical for which he received a Los Angeles Drama Critics Award. Brent received an Olivier Award nomination for his starring role in the London premiere of the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Kiss Me, Kate. His acclaimed performance was recorded for broadcast on PBS and is available on DVD. Brent made his debut as the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular in the new $40 million theatre at the Venetian on the Las Vegas Strip. He also starred in the City Center Encores! production of The Pajama Game and as King Arthur in the Paper Mill Playhouse production of Camelot. Other Broadway roles include Frank Butler in the Broadway revival of Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun at the Marquis Theatre opposite Reba McEntire, Charles Castleton in the Alan Jay Lerner musical Dance a Little Closer and Baron Felix Von Gaigern in Grand Hotel. Additional New York performances include Maximilian in the Broadway revival of Candide, and Tommy Albright in New York City Opera's production of Brigadoon. In New Zealand, he appeared as Archibald in that country's production of The Secret Garden. On the road, Brent played the Victor Duchesi role in the pre-Broadway Tour of Busker Alley with Tommy Tune, and he starred opposite Cathy Rigby in the National Tour of Annie Get Your Gun. -

Compiled and directed by Rob Ruggiero. Music direction, Michael Morris. With: Sandy Binion, Joe Cassidy, Adam Heller, Sally Wilfert. Piano: John DiPinto. By FRANK RIZZO With the success of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," William Finn is at last finding a larger audience for his work, which has too long been relegated to downtown venues. Now newbies can join devoted fans in a satisfying revue that is as funny, smart and passionate as the composer's own music. "Make Me a Song" is receiving its world preem at Hartford's TheaterWorks, which launched last summer's "Ella" (Fitzgerald) evening, now getting multiple regional plays. This time out helmer Rob Ruggiero is simply sticking to the score, ably assisted by four appealing performers, one engaging pianist and bright musical direction from Michael Morris. The result is a "teeny tiny" show that's as big, boisterous and life-loving as its subject. Keeping things personal by having material sung without amplification at the small theater, the revue beautifully reflects Finn's intimate joys. His songs -- 30 are presented here -- are best served up close and personal, where his delicious sweet and sour, itchy- bitchy words can be savored. -

Study Guide for Students Brief Overview Study Guide Purpose This study guide is designed for both teachers and students who will be attending Acting Up Stage Company’s production of William Finn's Elegies: A Song Cycle. This study guide provides information on the show, the creators, the cast, some additional context and explanation, and various activities that can be completed to enhance the theatre experience. Brief Overview of Elegies How do we deal with loss in a post 9/11 world? Through the 18 stories told onstage, Tony Award winner William Finn (Falsettos, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) pays tribute to relatives and friends, long-lost pets, and the victims of 9/11, celebrating those who have passed on. Often hilarious, always touching, and very poignant, Elegies takes us on a musical journey that explores the modern world that we live in, and life’s infinite joys. Five singers (three men, two women) take on different roles throughout the cycle, sometimes assuming the voice of a friend or loved one, and sometimes inhabiting Finn himself. No matter how specific Finn gets—be it a street address, the name of a recalcitrant dog, or a friend’s favourite vacation spot—these songs are as much about our lives as his. We see in each character shades of those closest to us, our family and our friends—the family we choose.
