may 2012 NOBODY LOVES YOU A World Premiere Musical Comedy Welcome to The Old Globe began its journey with Itamar Moses and Gaby Alter’s Nobody Loves You in 2010, and we are thrilled to officially launch the piece here in its world premiere production. The Globe has a longstanding relationship with Itamar Moses. He was a Globe Playwright-in-Residence in 2007-2008 when we produced the world premieres of his plays Back Back Back and The Four of Us. Nobody Loves You is filled with the same HENRY DIROCCO HENRY whip-smart humor and insight that mark Itamar’s other works, here united with Gaby’s vibrant music and lyrics. Together they have created a piece that portrays, with a tremendous amount of humor and heart, the quest for love in a world in which romance is often commercialized. Just across Copley Plaza, the Globe is presenting another musical, the acclaimed The Scottsboro Boys, by musical theatre legends John Kander and Fred Ebb. We hope to see you back this summer for our 2012 Summer Shakespeare Festival. Under Shakespeare Festival Artistic Director Adrian Noble, this outdoor favorite features Richard III, As You Like It and Inherit the Wind in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. The summer season will also feature Michael Kramer’s Divine Rivalry as well as Yasmina Reza’s Tony Award-winning comedy God of Carnage. LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER “Falsettos” TCA Biographies ANDREW C. WILK Andrew C. Wilk is a multiple Emmy Award-winning producer and director whose career has encompassed leading roles in many areas of commercial and educational content. Since his arrival at Lincoln Center in 2011, he has served as executive producer of Live From Lincoln Center episodes ranging from classical music to dance to theatre. Prior to his work at Lincoln Center, Wilk served as Chief Creative Officer at Sony Music Entertainment, where he oversaw all visual content for Sony’s label groups and spearheaded Sony’s digital expansion. He also served as Founding Programmer and Executive Vice President of Programming and Production for the National Geographic Channel, where he launched the channel and developed its initial programming and scheduled and commissioned new programs, including specials with PBS and NBC. Wilk has won five Emmy Awards and received 15 nominations. Over the course of his career, he has produced or directed more than 1,000 television shows, ranging from children’s programming to news to commercial entertainment, in addition to continuing his work as a conductor of live music concerts. JAMES LAPINE James Lapine collaborated with Stephen Sondheim as author and director for Sunday in the Park With George; Into the Woods; Passion; and the multi-media revue Sondheim on Sondheim. He also directed Merrily We Roll Along as part of Encores at New York City Center. With William Finn, he has collaborated on March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland, later presented on Broadway as Falsettos and recently revived in 2016; A New Brain; Muscle; and Little Miss Sunshine. -

I’m so glad we have this show here for Valentine’s Day. At its heart, Falsettos is about love. It’s the perfect piece of art for contemplating what love means, what we’re willing to do for it, and how it fits into our lives. The power of musical theatre! Speaking of love, if it’s Broadway you love then next up in the AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Broadway Series is the hilarious The Play That Goes Wrong; followed by Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (back by popular demand); direct from London is Bat Out of Hell; then the scrumdiddlyumptious Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. All of this will happen right here in the beautiful Winspear Opera House. And soon we’ll announce our exciting 2019/2020 Broadway season. This will be our first season in partnership with Dallas Summer Musicals, which will provide even more opportunities for North Texas audiences to enjoy the best of Broadway. -
The Music of William Finn

Peter Bergman In thirteen songs drawn from six of songwriter William Finn’s many projects, novice recording artist Lisa Howard presents a picture of Finn’s world and mind and illuminates with talent and style the inner inspirational force of the creator of these ditties. What emerges, really, is the unique style of his work. The stage works represented go back to 1989’s Romance in Hard Times and Falsettos in 1992 and continue through The Royal Family of Broadway (1994), A New Brain (1998) and Elegies: A Song Cycle (2003) with two songs from 2005’s Songs of Innocence and Experience. Among the best of them is "I Don’t Know Why You Love Me" from The Royal Family... A genuine period sound pervades this minor show-stopper sung with Derrick Baskin who scats with the best. In fact all four of the songs from this show are gems. They are also the only ones that sound like another composer was involved in the work. Finn’s songs tend to become one long number without the four cited above, somewhat similar to one another. Two other exceptions to this represent the best and worst of his work. "Sailing," beautifully performed by Howard with guitar accompaniment by Matt Hinkley from "A New Brain" is one of the finest pieces in Finn’s lexicon. -
BRENT BARRETT Brent Barrett Is No Stranger to the Stages of Broadway
BRENT BARRETT Brent Barrett is no stranger to the stages of Broadway, the West End, concert halls, recording studios or television. He was most recently seen on Broadway reprising his role as Billy Flynn in the Tony Award-winning hit, Chicago - The Musical for which he received a Los Angeles Drama Critics Award. Brent received an Olivier Award nomination for his starring role in the London premiere of the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Kiss Me, Kate. His acclaimed performance was recorded for broadcast on PBS and is available on DVD. Brent made his debut as the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular in the new $40 million theatre at the Venetian on the Las Vegas Strip. He also starred in the City Center Encores! production of The Pajama Game and as King Arthur in the Paper Mill Playhouse production of Camelot. Other Broadway roles include Frank Butler in the Broadway revival of Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun at the Marquis Theatre opposite Reba McEntire, Charles Castleton in the Alan Jay Lerner musical Dance a Little Closer and Baron Felix Von Gaigern in Grand Hotel. Additional New York performances include Maximilian in the Broadway revival of Candide, and Tommy Albright in New York City Opera's production of Brigadoon. In New Zealand, he appeared as Archibald in that country's production of The Secret Garden. On the road, Brent played the Victor Duchesi role in the pre-Broadway Tour of Busker Alley with Tommy Tune, and he starred opposite Cathy Rigby in the National Tour of Annie Get Your Gun. -

This study guide provides information on the show, the creators, the cast, some additional context and explanation, and various activities that can be completed to enhance the theatre experience. Brief Overview of Elegies How do we deal with loss in a post 9/11 world? Through the 18 stories told onstage, Tony Award winner William Finn (Falsettos, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) pays tribute to relatives and friends, long-lost pets, and the victims of 9/11, celebrating those who have passed on. Often hilarious, always touching, and very poignant, Elegies takes us on a musical journey that explores the modern world that we live in, and life’s infinite joys. Five singers (three men, two women) take on different roles throughout the cycle, sometimes assuming the voice of a friend or loved one, and sometimes inhabiting Finn himself. No matter how specific Finn gets—be it a street address, the name of a recalcitrant dog, or a friend’s favourite vacation spot—these songs are as much about our lives as his. We see in each character shades of those closest to us, our family and our friends—the family we choose. Study Guide for Students Brief Overview Study Guide Purpose This study guide is designed for both teachers and students who will be attending Acting Up Stage Company’s production of William Finn’s Falsettos. This study guide provides information on the show, the creators, the cast, some additional context and explanation, and various drama activities that can be completed to enhance the theatre experience. Brief Overview of Falsettos Falsettos is set at the beginning of the 1980’s. As the sexual revolution comes to a halting close with the appearance of a mysterious disease affecting primarily gay men, the tides of politics, social dynamics and reactionary measures begin to shift in New York and across the continent. Meanwhile, Marvin, a Jewish father, has left his wife and son for another man, but despite his personal attractions is still trying all methods of constructing a ‘tight knit family.’ As each of the characters enters therapy with Mendel, a psychiatrist, we learn about their hopes, their fears and their attitudes towards this time of significant change. Told through a series of rapid fire vignettes and heightened theatrical stylization, Falsettos remains the most important musical of the AIDS era. Examining not only the specifics surrounding the rise of the epidemic, this profoundly funny and enlightening musical opens up discussions about tolerance, mental health and, most significantly, the nature of family. History of Acting Up Stage Company Acting Up Stage incorporated in May 2004 as a not-for-profit organization under the leadership of Mitchell Marcus. The company looks to fill a unique niche in the Toronto theatre scene by producing intimate musicals at reasonable prices from Canadian and international authors that will attract a younger generation of audience members. -

Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center, five performers sing both in honor of and as the lost.[1] More specifically, they perform losses from the life of the gay Jewish composer-lyricist William Finn, embodying and/or narrating the lives of a diverse array of characters linked only by their connections to him. From a nameless English teacher, to Finn’s mother Barbara, to the architect who designed the Twin Towers, to producer/director Joseph Papp, to Finn himself, this musical engages with a range of histories. Some of those histories are obviously public (the events of 9/11, which are presented at the end of the evening); others are seemingly personal (the death of Finn’s mother); all are approached from a queer perspective. Finn (b. 1952 ) is perhaps best known as the composer and lyricist for the 1992 Broadway musical Falsettos, which tells the story of Marvin, a gay Jewish man, and his queer family: his ex-wife Trina, their son, Jason, Marvin’s lover, Whizzer, and Trina’s husband (and Marvin’s former psychiatrist) Mendel. While the first act focuses on these characters as they awkwardly attempt to negotiate their relationships, the second centers largely on Whizzer’s battle with, and eventual death from, AIDS.[2] Finn’s other well-known shows include A New Brain (1998), about a gay musician suffering from a brain tumor, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (2005), which humorously dramatizes the competition, camaraderie, and struggle for (and against) perfection amongst idiosyncratic children at a local spelling bee. -

Off-Center Season Jeanine Tesori, Artistic Director; Chris Fenwick, Music Director June 24 – 27 at New York City Center New York, N.Y., May 18, 2015– Jenni Barber, Quentin Earl Darrington, Bradley Dean, Dan Fogler, Ana Gasteyer, Josh Lamon, Aaron Lazar, Alyse Alan Louis and Rema Webb will join the previously announced Jonathan Groff in the Encores! Off-Center production of William Finn and James Lapine’s A New Brain, running June 24 – 27, 2015. The production will be directed by James Lapine, with choreography by Josh Prince. A New Brain, inspired by William Finn’s personal experiences, is a medical tragedy seen through the iris of a Looney Tunes short. After struggling composer Gordon Michael Schwinn (Jonathan Groff) collapses face- first into a plate of spaghetti, he is diagnosed with a brain tumor and is forced to come to terms with his creative ambitions and the lovable screw-ups in his life: an overbearing mother (Ana Gasteyer), a ruthless kiddie-show host (Dan Fogler), and a boyfriend who’d “rather be sailing” (Aaron Lazar). The musical opened at Lincoln Center Theater on June 18, 1998 and ran for 78 performances, winning the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical. A New Brain is the opening production of New York City Center‘s acclaimed Encores! Off-Center series, which is returning for a third season of landmark Off-Broadway musicals.
