8 BIOGRAPHIES DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE is a collaboration featuring the timeless music of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and vocal legends The Blind Boys of Alabama. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British royalty or Thailand’s king, PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND’S mission for more than 45 years is to preserve and perpetuate Jazz. In 2006, the ensemble was honored by the President of the United States with the prestigious National Medal of Arts for its efforts. Preservation Hall Jazz Band began touring in 1963, playing with many pioneers of the early Jazz scene, including Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, and Bunk Johnson. The band maintains a vigorous touring schedule, performing more than 150 days a year worldwide. When at home, the ensemble presents traditional New Orleans Jazz at the French Quarter’s historic Preservation Hall building, which is the inspiration behind the group’s name. In response to , Preservation Hall Jazz Band recorded Made in New Orleans: The Hurricane Sessions, a CD/DVD set of new and unreleased recordings and video footage from Preservation Hall’s more than 40 years as New Orleans’ musical and cultural center. The collection was recently released by Preservation Hall Recordings. Since 1939, THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA has sung a fervent blend of traditional and contemporary Gospel music. A master at bringing out the most spiritual aspects of mainstream music, the group has won legions of loyal fans and widespread acclaim with a repertoire of soul-searching songs and four-part harmony sound. The band, inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, has won Grammys for the albums Spirit of the Century, Higher Ground, Go Tell It on the Mountain, and There Will Be a Light. The group has been featured on 60 Minutes, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, and the 2005 Grammy Awards telecast. The Blind Boys of Alabama appeared in the 2003 film The Fighting Temptations and was the inspiration for the Steven Bochco television series Blind Justice. With its recent critically acclaimed album, Down in New Orleans, the long-running ensemble proves it still wields an edge in shaping music history. Recorded with a stellar cast of local singers in the Big Easy, the album is a celebration of the city’s Gospel-influenced soul. n
