India Introduction When the 1959 Cannes Film Festival rewarded Les Quatre Cents Coups by François Truffaut and Hiroshima, Mon Amour by Alain Resnais, it not only confirmed the arrival of new cinema but also of a new generation. Within a span of few years around 1958-1962, almost thirty young directors who were less than thirty came into prominence by their sheer brilliance and have left behind a significant body of work, almost a treasure trove, for the later generations. It suffices to judge by some of the first feature films made by them from 1958 onwards, like Les Amants by Louis Malle , Lettre de Sibérie by Chris Marker. 1959 : Le Beau Serge by Claude Chabrol , Moi, Un Noir by Jean Rouch , Les Dragueurs by Jean-Pierre Mocky, Les Quatre Cents Coups by Truffaut, Hiroshima, Mon Amour by Alain Resnais. 1960: L’Eau à la Bouche by Jacques Doniol-Valcroze , A Bout de Souffle by Jean-Luc Godard , Le Bel-Age by Pierre Kast. 1961: Lola by Jacques Demy , Le Propre de l’Homme by Claude Lelouch, Paris Nous Appartient by Jacques Rivette.

  • The Phenomenological Aesthetics of the French Action Film
Les Sensations fortes: The phenomenological aesthetics of the French action film DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Matthew Alexander Roesch Graduate Program in French and Italian The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Margaret Flinn, Advisor Patrick Bray Dana Renga Copyrighted by Matthew Alexander Roesch 2017 Abstract This dissertation treats les sensations fortes, or “thrills”, that can be accessed through the experience of viewing a French action film. Throughout the last few decades, French cinema has produced an increasing number of “genre” films, a trend that is remarked by the appearance of more generic variety and the increased labeling of these films – as generic variety – in France. Regardless of the critical or even public support for these projects, these films engage in a spectatorial experience that is unique to the action genre. But how do these films accomplish their experiential phenomenology? Starting with the appearance of Luc Besson in the 1980s, and following with the increased hybrid mixing of the genre with other popular genres, as well as the recurrence of sequels in the 2000s and 2010s, action films portray a growing emphasis on the importance of the film experience and its relation to everyday life. Rather than being direct copies of Hollywood or Hong Kong action cinema, French films are uniquely sensational based on their spectacular visuals, their narrative tendencies, and their presentation of the corporeal form. Relying on a phenomenological examination of the action film filtered through the philosophical texts of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Paul Ricoeur, Mikel Dufrenne, and Jean- Luc Marion, in this dissertation I show that French action cinema is pre-eminently concerned with the thrill that comes from the experience, and less concerned with a ii political or ideological commentary on the state of French culture or cinema.

  • A Mode of Production and Distribution
Chapter Three A Mode of Production and Distribution An Economic Concept: “The Small Budget Film,” Was it Myth or Reality? t has often been assumed that the New Wave provoked a sudden Ibreak in the production practices of French cinema, by favoring small budget films. In an industry characterized by an inflationary spiral of ever-increasing production costs, this phenomenon is sufficiently original to warrant investigation. Did most of the films considered to be part of this movement correspond to this notion of a small budget? We would first have to ask: what, in 1959, was a “small budget” movie? The average cost of a film increased from roughly $218,000 in 1955 to $300,000 in 1959. That year, at the moment of the emergence of the New Wave, 133 French films were produced; of these, 33 cost more than $400,000 and 74 cost more than $200,000. That leaves 26 films with a budget of less than $200,000, or “low budget productions;” however, that can hardly be used as an adequate criterion for movies to qualify as “New Wave.”1 Even so, this budgetary trait has often been employed to establish a genealogy for the movement. It involves, primarily, “marginal” films produced outside the dominant commercial system. Two Small Budget Films, “Outside the System” From the point of view of their mode of production, two titles are often imposed as reference points: Jean-Pierre Melville’s self-produced Silence of 49 A Mode of Production and Distribution the Sea, 1947, and Agnes Varda’s La Pointe courte (Short Point), made seven years later, in 1954.

  • 1 the French New Wave (Revisited)
The French New Wave (revisited) It doesn’t matter where you take things from, but where you take them to. Jean-Luc Godard Dr. Nicos Terzis, Adjunct Professor, Department of Graphic Design, School of Fine Arts, Technological Educational Institute of Athens, Athens, Greece Abstract: The proposed paper will attempt to delineate the history and the aesthetic characteristics of the French Nouvelle Vague, the most famous cinematic movement in history. The structure of the paper will mainly evolve around the following questions and topics: where did the name of the cinematic movement ―Nouvelle Vague‖ originate from? What kind of influences ―Nouvelle Vague‖ exerted on other film movements around the world? Which role did the Cinemathèque Française and Henri Langlois, its creator, play in the formation of the aforementioned cinematic movement? What role did the French film magazines of that period (e.g. Cahiers du Cinéma) play in the creation of this new wave? Who are the main representatives of the movement (Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette) and the Left Bank directors: Alain Resnais, Chris Marker, Agnes Varda? Who are the Precursors of the Nouvelle Vague? What are the modernist aesthetic characteristics of this world’s most famous cinematic movement, in terms of form [mise en scene] & narrative structure [montage]? Phenomenology and diffused existentialism in the movements’ themes and characters. Keywords: Nouvelle Vague, Modernism, Montage, Auteur theory, Camera Stylo 1 Prologue ―Αgainst modern

  • The Politics and Aesthetics of Haunting in 1950S Japan
The Politics and Aesthetics of Haunting in 1950s Japan by Darcy Gauthier A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto © Copyright by Darcy Gauthier, 2020 The Politics and Aesthetics of Haunting Darcy Gauthier Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto 2020 Abstract This thesis examines the politics and aesthetics of haunting in 1950s Japan. A distinct historical conjuncture separate from the social upheaval of the immediate postwar as well as the overt politicization of the 1960s, the 1950s is characterized by a narrative of national rebuilding and return that marginalized discrepant experiences of the present—producing a disjointedness that I articulate as a form of ‘haunting.’ In order to develop this, I turn to two triptychs of creators (two writers, two filmmakers, two composers) who collaborated to document the ‘haunted’ reality of 1950s Japan: Marguerite Duras, Alain Resnais, and Giovanni Fusco; and Abe Kōbō, Teshigahara Hiroshi, and Takemitsu Tōru. Collectively, these artists articulate a crisis where concrete lived experiences did not correspond with national narratives of recovery and the economic, social, and political modes of structuring that regulated people’s lives. Their fiction and theory attempted to bring this crisis into focus by representing the ghostly estrangement of modern subjects and also by theorizing alternative methods of historicization following a logic of ‘haunting,’ one that challenged the accepted reality—the taken-for-grantedness—of celebratory narratives of postwar life. ii Acknowledgments Without the support and inspiration from various individuals and institutions I would not have been able to complete this dissertation.
