  • LONG-TERM CHANGES in the WATER TEMPERATURE of RIVERS in LATVIA Inese Latkovska1,2 # and Elga Apsîte1
PROCEEDINGS OF THE LATVIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES. Section B, Vol. 70 (2016), No. 2 (701), pp. 78–87. DOI: 10.1515/prolas-2016-0013 LONG-TERM CHANGES IN THE WATER TEMPERATURE OF RIVERS IN LATVIA Inese Latkovska1,2 # and Elga Apsîte1 1 Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, University of Latvia, Jelgavas iela 1, Rîga LV-1004, LATVIA, e-mail: [email protected] 2 Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Centre, Maskavas iela 165, Rîga LV-1019, LATVIA # Corresponding author Communicated by Mâris Kïaviòð The study describes the trends of monthly mean water temperature (from May to October) and the annual maximum water temperature of the rivers in Latvia during the time period from 1945 to 2000. The results demonstrated that the mean water temperatures during the monitoring period from May to October were higher in the largest rivers (from 13.6 oC to 16.1 oC) compared to those in the smallest rivers (from 11.5 oC to 15.7 oC). Similar patterns were seen for the maxi- mum water temperature: in large rivers from 22.9 oC to 25.7 oC, and in small rivers from 20.8 oC to 25.8 oC. Generally, lower water temperatures occurred in rivers with a high groundwater inflow rate, for example, in rivers of the Gauja basin, in particular, in the Amata River. Mann-Kendall test results demonstrated that during the monitoring period from May to October, mean water tem- peratures had a positive trend. However, the annual maximum temperature had a negative trend. Key words: water temperature, long-term changes, river, Latvia.

ESUKA – JEFUL 2017, 8–1: 41–59 INSIGHT INTO THE CITY/TOWN NAMES OF LATVIA Laimude Balode University of Helsinki, University of Latvia Abstact. The origin of place names is a research topic for linguists (or onomasticians) and geographers, but since ancient times a wide range of people have also been inter- ested in the subject. As Latvia is the closest neighbour to both Lithuania and Estonia, they share, to a large extent, a common history, as well as – because of this fact – a number of borrowed common words and names. This article is based on the toponym- ical material included in the short dictionary of Latvian geographical names entitled “No Abavas līdz Zilupei” (“From Abava to Zilupe. The origin of Latvian geographical names”), which was compiled by Laimute Balode and Ojārs Bušs and published in Rīga in 2015. It offers insights into the contemporary situation of Latvian oikonyms as well as providing comparisons of the names of inhabited places with their historical names. Keywords: onomastics, place names, Latvia DOI: https://doi.org/10.12697/jeful.2017.8.1.03 1. Introduction Today, Latvia has 9 cities and 67 towns (N=76) with town privi- leges. Naturally there are ancient cities, such as Rīga; founded in 1201, it has had town privileges since 1225. Other examples include Valmiera and Cēsis, which were granted town privileges in 1323, and Aizpute, Kuldīga, Ventspils, which were granted town status in 1378. In addition, Ludza was recorded in historical annals as early as in 1173, but town privileges were not granted until 1777. Then we must also consider the newest towns of Latvia: Jūrmala has been recognised as a town since 1956 and several inhabited places – Aknīste, Cesvaine, Ķegums, Pāvilosta, Saulkrasti, Seda, Stende, and Vangaži – were adjudged as towns in the first years of the second independence – from 1991.

  • Contribution of Jānis Lielmanis in Plant Breeding in Latvia
PROCEEDINGS OF THE LATVIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES. Section B, Vol. 66 (2012), No. 1/2 (676/677), pp. 79–85. DOI: 10.2478/v10046-011-0050-0 Science Life CONTRIBUTION OF JÂNIS LIELMANIS IN PLANT BREEDING IN LATVIA Ina Belicka and Zigurds Kalmanis State Stende Cereal Breeding Institute, “Diþzemes”, Diþstende, Lîbagu pag., Talsu nov., LV-3258, LATVIA [email protected] In autumn 1922, the Ministry of Agriculture of Latvia delegated agronomist Jânis Hilarijs Lielmanis (1895–1970) to organise and establish the State Stende Breeding Station. For many years, he was a director (1922–1940) and later a researcher (1945–1956) of the State Stende Breeding Station. Under the guidance of Lielmanis, an infrastructure for breeding work was formed and re- search into the morphological, biological, and economic traits of local plant varieties obtained from different Latvian regions were begun in the station. Already in 1924, breeders started breed- ing of cereals, peas, flax, potato, and clover, using selection from local and foreign varieties and also hybridisation. Until 1945, breeders in Stende, under the guidance of Jânis Lielmanis, devel- oped 16 plant varieties, in the period from 1945 to 1960 — 19 varieties. Parallel to his work in Stende, Lielmanis delivered lectures on plant breeding at the University of Latvia (1933–1940) and lectures on genetics, breeding, and seed production at the Latvian University of Agriculture (1940–1944, then Jelgava Academy of Agriculture; 1945–1948). In the later part of his life, Liel- manis worked in the Latvian Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture (1957–1970), where he conducted research in crop farming and breeding of red clover using traditional breeding meth- ods, as well as polyploidy and heterosis methods, which was modern for that time.
