Sunday, May 11, 2008. [08.05.09][news] Kim Dongwan on his 2nd album. Part 2. Kim Dongwan, having lived the past 10 years with burning passion, pursues his dreams once again. Shinhwa’s Kim Dongwan. The country’s best, longest-running group has achieved unparalleled popularity. During this time, he has also shown his potential as an actor. Having recently issued his 2nd album, “Secret”, he recalls how he has spent the last 10 years busying himself, and shares with us his blueprint for his next 10 years now that he has reached his 30s. “Being a Shinhwa member for the past 10 years has burnt out my passion and I am trying to re-ignite the fire amongst the dust and ashes.” The past 10 years of glamourous memories, together with the obstacles lying ahead of Kim Dongwan, let us now take a look at what's in his brain. ▲To be No. 1: Although Shinhwa has topped the charts for countless times, the goal of being number 1 stays rooted in his head. “I still miss the prizes. Haha. Because we were not popular during our first album, we did not even make it into the top 10, it was disappointing. The songs in my first solo album were not bad, and it topped the charts and this gave me the courage for my 2nd solo album. Being a singer for 10 years, I am not quite used to the emerging Electronica trend.” ▲To be a successful actor in his 30s: In the drama “Goodbye Sadness”, he has exhibited his mature acting skills. As Kim Dongwan will be enlisting into the army soon, he is troubled as to how to continue his acting career. Unlike other singer-actors, he has been taking on challenging roles, and not of the glamourous ones. “When I was in my early 20s, I did dream of being Jo In Sung, Jang Dong Gun. However, that would not have been me. I want to live well through my 30s, and become a charismatic ajosshi.” ▲Korean medicine; anti-aging; dermatology; greenhouse effect; moving to a new house and mad cow disease: Kim Dongwan was once been nicknamed the “walking pharmacy” as he has extensive medical knowledge and will provide medicine to the people around him. When he heard that figure skater Kim Yeon Ah was hurt, he was keen to help and he also introduced physiotherapists to reporters too. Recently he has gained interest in Korean medicine. "I am a very health-conscious person to begin with. Korean medicine aids in building up the immunity system. I am very interested in the benefits of omija and fleeceflower root. For males suffering from headaches, fleeceflower root is very effective. I'm interested in acupuncture too, how it helps to improve skin elasticity and skin tighteining." Because of his meticulous nature, he has begun to notice his environment. “During the Asian tour, I experienced the air pollution in different countries. In China, I had a horrible sore throat. I hope to live in a place with clean air, and I'm moving to Bukaksan this month.” ▲Quit drinking: For health and anti-aging purposes, this is a must. It's time to think of his age. His alcohol capacity is about 2.5 to 3 bottles of soju. And his drinking habits? “When I'm drunk, I'll keep on telling jokes. Because I'm wide awake, I'd keep on laughing and the people around me will be happy, and continue drinking." Hyesung is his best drinking buddy, “Hyesung’s alcohol limit is about the same as me. However, more often than not, Hyesung will get drunk first and lose consciousness. When I drink with him, I'd think 'You're even more drunk than me, I should be just fine', and I'd leave feeling at ease." ▲About his next generation: When people reach their 30s, they shouldn't delay plans for a family anymore. However the cautious Kim Dongwan is unable to start a relationship easily since he's not the type to make a move at first sight. "I'm bothered that I can't find a girlfriend. I'd observe from the sidelines, and once I even observed her for 3 years, even who she met and how she broke up." ▲The determination to love the members: What does it mean? "Everyone has gotten along very well for 10 years, but there were also times when we were upset with each other, or disappointed in each other. That's why among the 6 members the couple pairings tend to chage. Sometimes I'm with Hyesung, sometimes I'm with Eric, just like that. Although there are times I get angry or hurt, but I'll continue to love them. To Kim Dongwan, the Shinhwa members are probably his harshest critics among his celebrity friends. "Actually their honesty can be very hurting, but that's because they don't want to see me end up looking like a fool. Other people won't even care if I end up looking like a fool." ▲Researching how to keep Shinhwa as his main source of income until he dies: "If I say the wrong thing I'll get scolded by the fans. when I say main source of income, I mean that will be my main occupation. I watched Duran Duran live in concert not too long ago, and I felt that it would be so cool if we could still perform even when our hair turns grey. When the members get together for a drink we'd always say that by the time we're 60 we won't be able to dance on chairs anymore. He once said in an interview that he devoted his youth to Shinhwa. What does Shinhwa mean to him then? "The sports car that I've always dreamed of. In a guy's heart, he would always have that very expensive sports car that he would want to own. You can say that Shinhwa is something that I'll want to treasure all my life." Source: JES&oceans Chi trans: jojoyu7@shinhwachina Eng trans: midnightgirl13@shinhwabiz ______. ON SHINHWA. As Shinhwa’s time together is nearing the end (with the impending military enlistment of Eric and Dongwan), the companies have decided to drown us in a sea of merchandise by releasing yet more souvenirs, music outlets, even a comic book to the fans. It’s a blatant ploy to make money and take advantage of this ’emotional’ period to gain profits. Personally, I don’t mind because I think merchandises actually work towards both fans as well as the big bosses. Also, Shinhwa has worked themselves like nuts, that I feel they deserve the success and the money that comes with it. As is well known, Korean pop stars are probably the most overworked celebrities in the world. I have long forgiven them for wanting to make money by releasing fandom items after items. Sometimes I feel they are useless, other times, I’m running to buy. Here are some goodies I deem to be worth MY money and other ones which aren’t. CDs/DVDs/Photobooks. They are pricey (sometimes astronomically so), but they are the ultimate collection. I go for the ones with a lot of behind the scenes and personal footages because that’s when Shinhwa is best, being themselves. Even when they were sleeping, eating, or messing around, the personal tapings never fail to excite me. Recently, as a group, they released 2 DVDs and 3 special edition albums. 1 Photobook is still yet to be released, Forever Photobook. Selling at 140 plus, I just know that unless someone decides to gift it, I’d never lay my hands on one of those. There’s also the part where I would have to be at gun point to hand over that much money for a photobook. Anyways, aside from the actual 9th Album, Shinhwa has released the first Shinhwa Vol.9 Special Limited Edition with Photobook, then there’s also the International Edition of it because the 50k copies of the actual Ltd Ed weren’t made so accessible to international fans with low stocks supplied to internet based stores. If that’s not enough, they repackaged it and sold it under the new name of Shinhwa Vol.9 White Edition with some additional pictures to the photobook and a new song. Frankly, even if I have more money, I wouldn’t spend it for this because the difference between this and the original one is so little that I would feel cheated paying another 30 something dollars just to see some more pictures and hear a new song. As for DVDs, there’s the ridiculously overpriced Shinhwa 2007 Tour DVD and the more recent Shinhwa Greatest Artist which, from the looks of it, seems to be quite worth it. Posters/Postcards. I’m never a poster kind of girl. In my years of being a fangirl, I somehow never took up to plastering posters on the wall. I tried with some movie posters, but it didn’t last and I ended up taking them down. So now my wall is clean. My point is, posters are wasted on me. I ended up throwing this poster and this poster away and giving the Sp.Ed poster to a friend. As for postcard, seriously? It’s pretty and it can function as a bookmark, but no, thank you. Other collectibles. The sheer amount of random goodies in the world of Shinhwa can shock you. Stuff from clothing, tumblers, perfumes, towels, paper bag, light stick, umbrella, hairpin, stamps, necklace, cellphone accessories, soaps, deskboards, aaaaaand *drums* underwear!! It’s pure insanity, if you ask me. I had a thought of buying the fragrance, but hell, I can’t even pay for my own cell phone bill. And these, IMO, fall under the ‘useless’ category. What I’m trying to say is that while memorabilia and collectible items such as above would heal our longing for the group while they’re on hiatus, we have to face the fact that some of these goodies are plain money down the drain. I’m not going to persuade you to stop buying, because these goodies actually feed the boys too. But sometimes, people interpret being a fan as buying as much merchandises as you possibly can and go crazy on them despite themselves. Having said that, it all depends on your taste and financial conditions. Some would kill for a good tubed poster, while others would show their love by drinking out of a Shinhwa tumbler. These goodies WOULD lessen our missing them. So, if you’re doing well and have more money, why not sleep in a Shinhwa hoodie? Dongwan: 2nd Jib The Secret. Yesterday, I listened to Dongwan’s new album for a good several hours trying to dissect, pick my favourites, and get a general grasp of his style in this album. I downloaded this album (because I am broke) about three weeks back and while I had heard of the songs, I hadn’t really listened to them. Therefore yesterday, I sat through the whole album and replayed some of the more enjoyable songs. I don’t pretend to be a music expert, I listen to what I like according to my own taste. So here’s my own take. On Bimil (The Secret), it’s a very catchy and addictive tune. As I’m typing, I’m actually bobbing my head to this song. Comparing Secret and Handkerchief, Secret wins, hands down. Handkerchief was admittedly an addictive song as well, but it lacks attitude. It’s more of a manufactured ballad piece designed to show Dongwan’s vocal, establish a mature balladeer image, and of course win hearts. And Secret, despite it being an electronica number, it actually displays Dongwan’s strong vocal too. So win win on both parts. The album was initially scheduled to release earlier this year, but then pushed back for a release many times. I must say, the wait is worth it. The album is not perfect, but it’s a huge improvement over his debut album. Not to say that his debut was crap, it was a ‘good enough’ album. The album consists mostly of dull ballad songs, with a few interesting numbers. It was a safe entry into the competitive Korean music industry what with ballad being the rage in the market. It also suffered from what I will call the ‘Debut Syndrome’, the need to include as much artists as possible to feature in one’s album. Dongwan practically only sings alone like 4 out of 11 singing songs. My favourite songs are Handkerchief, Three Musketeers (feat. MC Mong and Heo In Chang), My Love (feat Eric), and I Like Summer (feat. Andy). And there’s one more stand out piece, even if I’m not fond of it, Scream (feat DBace and DJ Tukutz). You see what I mean? This album is more of a collab album. One quality I must take off my hat is the fact that the album does so well highlighting Dongwan’s vocal. He started Shinhwa as the 2nd lead singer then slowly gained more attention. And this album really puts the stress where it should be. It establishes Dongwan as a top singer (not idol group member anymore) with actual talent and voice. If you see his solo performances, they are simple, no dance routine, no exceptional stage decoration, even Dongwan himself is simply clad in shirts and pants (sometimes suit), but they really focus on how great he sings. But I am here to talk about Dongwan’s 2nd Jib not blabbing about his 1st one. First off, it is apparent that Dongwan has gained a lot of confidence to venture into a more exciting music. Other than Bimil, there are many other interesting tracks in this album. What I noted was that they show a wide variety of style and colors. I complained about his 1st album having too many ballad songs. Don’t get me wrong, this album has some slow songs too, but they have more spice and life to make them a level or two more appealing than the same kind back in his 1st jib. Second, it has noticeably less featuring and duets. Out of 12 singing songs, only 4 has other people in them. And only 1 is duet (You Don’t Know Me, with Jade Valerie), which means that the other 3 are Dongwan mostly. His cover of Kim Hyun Chul’s Why Are You Like This has Heritage as a support. Tiffany of SNSD (help me god, I am so yucked out by her) does the narration in Secret. Last time, he got RicSyungDy to feature respectively (and Minwoo to compose), this time Eric does the rap in Honey. Still, the album is Dongwan through and through. Reportedly, Dongwan changed one of the main songs at the last minute. It is obvious that he puts a lot of effort for this album and he wants this album to leave a lasting impression when he goes off for military. My favourite song you ask? The songs I like you ask? It would be easier to identify the songs I’m not too fond of. The songs I love way too much: Secret, Psy Kiss, Song of The Wind ///The songs I like: Why Is It Like This, Honey, Bad Girls Run Away, Good Person, Should Forget, You Don’t Know Me///The songs I’m on the fence with: A Man’s Feeling, Leaving is Fine///The song I think is bland: To The Person I Love. Overall, in my book, this album is a 8.5 out of 10. Jindy, the Dongsaengs.. Junjin is a 80er while Andy is a 81er. I’ve been wanting to do a compare and contrast between these two cuties. Both are obliging. Sometimes too obliging. If you’ve been watching Andy’s then you’d know he pretty much does whatever his ‘wife’, Solbi asks him to do. Andy oppa, carry me up the stairs. Andy oppa, fold the clothes. Oppa, go buy me some coffee. Oppa, make me a princess bed. And dude, he did all of it. And let’s not forget that Eric often succeed in prodding Andy to do what Eric wants him to do. Junjin on the other hand is just plain susceptible. I’ve seen on countless videos how his hyungs just tell him stuff to do and he would do them without much thoughts. As well, go look up the word Junjin and Prank and you’ll see for yourself how easily duped he is. He’d do whatever the pranksters ask him do. Both have gone through a somewhat hard past. Andy left the group around 4th Jib. First it was said that he went back to US to finish his study, then they said it was personal issues, then later it was revealed that his parents started getting sick and he had to go back to take care of them. Other rumours were that Andy couldn’t stand the way he was treated by SM, even going as far as trying to kill himself. Whatever happened, in the end, he went back. Andy’s parents were divorced when he was a teenager and that seemed to be one of the sources of his unhappiness. His mom (and I think his dad too) is really sick, and he’s taking care of them and their treatment bills. He’s been working like mad trying to earn a decent living to feed his family. Andy’s often pointed out as the least talented and useful in Shinhwa and after he released his first album, people kept telling him to shut it and go back to variety show guestings. Andy hasn’t had a real relationship for 6 years and now that he’s having ‘scandal’ with Solbi, another issue comes: fans. Apparently Andy being romantically linked to a female celeb doesn’t bode well with them. They cite all sorts of reason which ultimately condemn this union. I swear to god, sometimes those crazy bitches need to be shoved off a cliff. Andy oppa, you can do whatever you want. Stop caring what other people think. Junjin’s parents were also divorced when he was little because his dad, Charlie Park were pretty wandering and irresponsible. His mom couldn’t stand it and ‘abandoned’ him. When they finally met again years later, she, his own biological mother, told him to not contact her again because of some stuff. His second mom was reportedly a mean stepmother. It was said that she would refuse to feed him or something. His third mom is his mom now. She’s the good one who took care of him and raised him well. I saw a segment with him and his parents and he is really close with his mom. He has had several life accidents, some even life threatening. When he was little, he almost drowned and this was the source of his long time water phobia. He’s fine now, but if you watch some old videos, he rarely went close to water. He got into a serious head injury a few years ago and it was a miracle he could survive through it. Junjin’s been suffering from Panic Disorder and Depressions for years and has been taking meds for one and a half years. Both have low self esteems. You’d think that being in a hugely popular idol group makes them confident, or even overly so, but not for these guys. They are in the shadows of the older members. Eric made it big as an actor and CF kings. Minwoo and Hyesung as a solo singer. Dongwan juggling between acting and singing. Up until last year, Andy’s gigs consist mainly of variety show guestings and some minor acting jobs. Junjin’s position was slightly better. He acted in mediocre dramas and released a quite successful single, proving that his singing skills were much better than people had thought. But their careers were no match for the more established hyungs. Jindy never really received as much attention as their hyungs and in variety shows/interviews/news, you could tell that the attention given to them was less. Last year, Andy pushed through the scene with a musical and then this year, a real solo debut. According to MIAK, Andy’s album sales aren’t exactly wonders, but these days, as Dongwan put it, Andy’s popularity is no joking matter, thanks to the show MBC’s We Got Married. He’s seriously popular now, dubbed as the perfect husband. The other dongsaeng, Junjin, also broke through with his own 1st Jib and is doing rounds of promos for it. I saw it on MIAK April chart (which for some reason disappeared) and in 2 weeks, he sold about 20k, which is quite a feat in Korean music industry. Regarding their solos, I’d like to say a bit. Andy’s vocal needs a lot of improvement if he wants to go on as gasoo. His rapping is great, but he’s been doing vocal for his solo and he’s not that good in that department. His album was good enough. He was smart in that he focuses on what he knows best, aegyo. His singles are of the cute kind and he’s banking on it. I must applaud Andy for his decisions; he built his confidence through the musical last year in a low profile manner and then he literally goes for it by doing a solo album and even when he was showered by negative comments, he kept on performing and guesting left and right. Okay, so maybe he needs money, but that means his low self esteem case is slowly ebbing away. Back when he was working for his single, he said he was gonna do a dancing song because he is known as a dancer. Then he surprised us by coming out with a ballad song instead. This year, he announced months ago that he was working on another mini album. Only days before the release did we find out that he changed his mind and did a full album. His decisions were bullseye, for sure, but they also show how volatile and shaky he still is, meaning that in the ‘hypothesis’ stage of his projects, he hasn’t really thought things through, then later in the ‘researching’ stage did he begin to see things clear and literally change direction. I guess in the end even tho his indecisive personality needs improvement, what matters is that he made the right decisions. Mannenyuki’s World. Kim Dong Wan Vol.2 [The Secret; Between us] Album.
