Port of London Handbook 5 Foreword Foreword by Port of London Authority Chief Executive Robin Mortimer London – a city of great history, culture, business and sport. It’s also a city inextricably linked to its river from mouth to source, whose trading history made our capital what it is today. The River Thames remains as economically important today to London and the south east, as it ever has been. It’s the delivery route through which a city and region of almost nine million people get their food, fuel and consumer goods. And it’s the main channel for UK exports. Heart of city life: New Year’s Eve fireworks over the Thames. Those who live, work or trade in London need no convincing of the capital’s importance nationally and internationally. Introduction But a new academic study in 2014 served to underline the city’s position on the global stage – naming London as the world’s most influential city. “That was due to a combination of connectivity, education, quality of life and other factors – and the author of the study was a US academic,” says Port of London Authority CEO Robin Mortimer. “And what is at the heart of this great city? The River Thames, from its green and leafy upper district, to the historic heart of the city, to the estuary with its heavy industry and major port facilities. The Thames plays a vital role in the success of London.” Having joined the PLA in March 2014, Robin Mortimer says: “The absolute, overall message is that there is huge potential for growth. The port is closer to the main market than any other UK port and it has potential to grow further in terms of its capacity. “We are seeing a number of major developments along the river as port and terminal owners and operators invest in new infrastructure and equipment. And the PLA as an organisation is here to facilitate that growth in several ways.” The PLA delivers excellent customer service, backed by an extraordinary depth of marine expertise. It leads the way nationally and internationally in disciplines such as hydrographics, Vessel Traffic Services and pilotage. This isn’t an organisation full of ‘generalists’, Robin Mortimer points out. “The PLA is an organisation with very deep skills.
