Frick Award for baseball broadcasting, is one of those no-brainers that really was a no-brainer - as in, "You mean he wasn't in already?" Which brings us to Bill King, who hasn't won, and at this rate might never win. Not the Frick, not the Pete Rozelle Radio-TV Award and not the Curt Gowdy Media Award. None of them. And that remains an amazement. King, the definitive voice of the Raiders and Warriors, and longest-serving voice of the A's, has come close to the Frick before only to fall in 2007 to Kansas City Royals broadcaster Denny Matthews, and it is a weird tribute to King's career that the Frick is actually his best shot even though most people believe he was better at football and basketball than baseball. The problem of course is that King is the classic case of out-of-sight, out-of-mind greatness. He died in 2005, his work was almost exclusively in radio, and his gifts were too broad for easy categorization. He isn't in the Pro Football Hall of Fame through the Rozelle Award because the award has been given almost exclusively to TV broadcasters and executives. The only two radio figures to win in 22 years were Buffalo's Van Miller and Pittsburgh's Myron Cope. He isn't in the Basketball Hall of Fame through the Gowdy Award even though many of his contemporaries are.

    Howard Cosell has never won Rozelle Award Courtesy si.com (Sports Illustrated Website) by STAA client Marky Billson (August 5, 2010) The Pete Rozelle Television-Radio Award is given annually by the Pro Football Hall of Fame to an iconic football broadcasting figure for "longtime exceptional contributions to radio and television in professional football." Yet for the 21-year history of the award, there has been one glaring oversight: Howard Cosell has not won it. Cosell needs no explanation of why he belongs; he is simply the most famous sportscaster of all time and the lead of the classic Monday Night Football broadcast team of the 1970s and early '80s. Everyone else associated with that influential lineup; Frank Gifford, Don Meredith, even producer Roone Arledge, has won the award. Dan Dierdorf, who indirectly took over Cosell's role on Monday Night Football as the critic in the broadcast booth from 1987 to '98, won the award in 2008. This year's winner, Chris Berman, who gets inducted Friday at the Hall of Fame dinner, regularly mimics Cosell by shouting "He! Could! Go! All! The! Way!" while commenting on football highlights. Even Myron Cope, whose 1967 piece on Cosell in Sports Illustrated, "Onward Through the Broadcasting Jungle," foretold Cosell's intrepid broadcast journalism style three years before the creation of MNF, won the award in 2005. (Cope was the Pittsburgh Steelers' color commentator from 1970 to 2004.) "Howard has, since the beginning, been one of the names on the list," says Joe Horrigan, Vice President of Communications/Exhibits at the Pro Football Hall of Fame and a Rozelle award voter.

    In 1945 the Buffalo Evening News applied for FCC permission to build a television station. A year earlier crosstown newspaper, The Courier Express, applied for a license but soon dropped the ideas as infeasible. Many at the time were convinced that television was only a passing fad...an expensive novelty. Buffalo Evening News Editor-in-Chief and WBEN President Alfred Kirchhofer had a reputation for innovation in the newspaper industry. Originally skeptical about the new medium, the two were sold on the idea by Bob Thompson. Thompson, who had a big hand in crafting WBEN radio wrote a memo that said, "The Buffalo Evening News is the communications leader of the community, The Butler family and you, Mr. Kirchhofer have no choice. It may lose money forever, but Buffalo must have a TV station." In 1946 the OK was granted and the WBEN-TV call-letters were assigned to the new Channel 4. Soon Buffalo households would start adding a strange-looking piece of furniture with tubes, wires and an oddball window that could shrink the world enough to make it fit in your living room. Life at home would never be the same. Broadcasters and decorated World War II veteran Fred Keller was one of four employees chosen by WBEN in 1947 to gather information about how to program and operate a TV station. The other employees chosen to explore the new technology were Ed Wegman, Ed Reimers and Woody Magnuson. They were sent to various experimental stations around the country to monitor their operations and to bring home briefcases with pertinent materials.
