  • BUFFALO BILLS Team History
PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2020-2021 EDITIOn QUARTERBACK JIM KELLY - hall of fame class of 2002 BUFFALO BILLS Team History The Buffalo Bills began their pro football life as the seventh team to be admitted into the new American Football League. The franchise was awarded to Ralph C. Wilson on October 28, 1959. Since that time, the Bills have experienced extended periods of both championship dominance and second-division frustration. The Bills’ first brush with success came in their fourth season in 1963 when they tied for the AFL Eastern division crown but lost to the Boston Patriots in a playoff. In 1964 and 1965 however, they not only won their division but defeated the San Diego Chargers each year for the AFL championship. Head Coach Lou Saban, who was named AFL Coach of the Year each year, departed after the 1965 season. Buffalo lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1966 AFL title game and, in doing so, just missed playing in the first Super Bowl. Then the Bills sank to the depths, winning only 13 games while losing 55 and tying two in the next five seasons. Saban returned in 1972, utilized the Bills’ superstar running back, O. J. Simpson, to the fullest extent and made the Bills competitive once again. That period was highlighted by the 2,003-yard rushing record set by Simpson in 1973. But Saban departed in mid-season 1976 and the Bills again sank into the second division until a new coach, Chuck Knox, brought them an AFC Eastern division title in 1980.

  • Top 20 Passers, Only Otto Graham of the Cleveland Browns Played in the AAFC
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 16, No. 2 (1994) PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TOP TWENTY RANKINGS HALL OF FAME TOP TWENTY PASSERS CANTON, OHIO – San Francisco’s Steve Young challenged former 49ers teammate Joe Montana for the career forward passing leadership in 1993. However, Montana, now with the Kansas City Chiefs, did not relinquish the number one spot which he has held in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Top Twenty passing display since midway through the 1988 season. The Top Twenty display ranks the lifetime leaders in rushing, passing, receiving and scoring statistics and is updated weekly throughout each NFL season. The Top Twenty rankings include statistics from the All- America Football Conference (1946-49), as well as the American and National Football Leagues. Among the Top 20 passers, only Otto Graham of the Cleveland Browns played in the AAFC. With his AAFC numbers, Graham ranks No. 4 with an 86.6 rating. With his NFL-only statistics, he ranks out of the Top Twenty with a 78.1 point score. Montana, a 15-season NFL veteran, holds a slim one-tenth of a point lead with a 93.1 career rating. In 1993, Young led the league with a passer rating of over 100 for an NFL-record third consecutive season and now owns a 93.0 career passing score. Although a torn Achilles tendon suffered in Week 6 ended the 1993 season for Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins, he lost no ground among the Top all-time quarterbacks and is still ranked No. 3 with an 88.1 ratings.

  • JIM KELLY Played in the National Football League (NFL) for Eleven Seasons and Spent the Entirety of His NFL Career with the Buffalo Bills
JIM KELLY played in the National Football League (NFL) for eleven seasons and spent the entirety of his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills. He also played two seasons with the Houston Gamblers in the United States Football League (USFL). Kelly was born and raised in East Brady, PA, about 60 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. He was a standout football and basketball player at East Brady High School, winning all-state honors. Kelly went to the University of Miami, where he played an important role in helping build the program into one of the nation's best. Kelly finished his career at Miami with 406 completions in 646 attempts for 5,233 yards and 32 TDs; he was inducted into the university's hall of fame in 1992. Kelly was selected by the Bills in the first round of the 1983 NFL draft and was taken fourteenth overall. He chose to sign with the Gamblers instead and did not play for the Bills until the USFL folded in 1986. Employing the "K-Gun" offense, known for its no-huddle shotgun formations, Kelly led one of the greatest NFL scoring juggernauts. From 1991 to 1994, he helped guide the Bills to a record four consecutive Super Bowls, although the team lost each game. Kelly holds the all-time NFL record for most yards gained per completion in a single game and he recorded an NFL best 101.2 passer rating in 1990, led the league with 33 touchdowns passes in 1991, and made the Pro Bowl five times (1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, & 1992).

  • Nobody Bigger Than Tom Brady
“THERE’S NOBODY BIGGER IN THE NFL THAN TOM BRADY” Six quarterbacks went off the board before the New England Patriots selected TOM BRADY with the 199th pick of the 2000 NFL Draft. Four years later, Brady is the only one of those quarterbacks with a Super Bowl appearance on his résumé, let alone two Super Bowl titles and Super Bowl MVP awards. Not only that, but Brady became the youngest starting quarterback in history to win an NFL championship (24), while also winning the MVP award in the Patriots’ 20-17 win over St. Louis in Super Bowl XXXVI. “He came in with me at Michigan,” said Raiders’ cornerback CHARLES WOODSON of Brady, one of his college teammates. “He never really got that chance to shine. Then he got to the pros and had to sit behind DREW BLEDSOE. Then he finally got his chance, and now, there's nobody in the NFL bigger than Tom Brady." With only two of the six signal-callers picked ahead of him staking claim to starting positions this season – CHAD PENNINGTON of the Jets and MARC BULGER of the Rams – Brady has accomplished more than anybody could have imagined since taking over as the starter for the Patriots. He continues to build a reputation as one of the top QBs in the NFL today, though other quarterbacks like PEYTON MANNING and STEVE MC NAIR might put up bigger numbers. "Tom Brady…I will play with him any day of the week,” says Patriots’ cornerback TY LAW. “With all due respect to Steve McNair, Peyton Manning and so many of the other great quarterbacks in the game today, I want to go out there with Tom Brady, because winning is the trump card of everything." Since his storybook rise to prominence with his first championship, Brady garnered another Super Bowl title and MVP award in New England’s 32-29 win over Carolina in Super Bowl XXXVII last season.

While the task seems simple, there is a lot that goes into the unheralded skill, including establishing chemistry between the center and quarterback. “It’s very important,” says six-time Pro Bowl center KEVIN MAWAE of the Tennessee Titans, who helped VINCE YOUNG, the 2006 Offensive Rookie of the Year, adjust to the NFL. “The quarterback needs to feel comfortable with what is happening in front of him with protection. When a center and quarterback have chemistry, the quarterback will understand what protection calls are going to come and why that call was made. “I have watched film with quarterbacks,” continues Mawae. “We go through different scenarios and situations and work through what calls will work best for both the line and the quarterback. It helps eliminate the discrepancies that may occur during a game.” Indianapolis’ All-Star combination of quarterback PEYTON MANNING and center JEFF SATURDAY, which helped the Colts to victory in Super Bowl XLI, has started 110 games together – the most by an active quarterback-center duo and the fourth-best in NFL history.
