Today the Church begins a brand-new liturgical year and our season of Advent with our celebration of the First Sunday of Advent! In many ways it feels like a fresh, new beginning today as we come to meet Jesus at His Altar! We welcome all of our guests and visitors as we begin this Holy Season! And we pray that the Grace and Peace of Jesus Christ, and a great outpouring of His Holy Spirit consume us in these next four weeks as prepare for the Birthday of our Savior and ultimately for His Second Coming! These are very special days! Advent is unlike any other time of our liturgical year. It’s time to listen. It’s time to prepare. It’s time to read God’s Word in Sacred Scripture and let it sink into our hearts and lives. These days of Advent c an be some of the richest days of the entire year for us spiritually, IF we let them! What Advent is most definitely NOT is Christmas. It’s not Christmas for three more weeks and about 48 hours. I know, I know, Target, and Walmart, and Amazon started Christmas weeks ago. And a lot of our neighbors and co-workers also have started celebrating Christmas early without doing any Advent. And yet, if there is ever a time that we as Catholic Christians need to be counter-cultural, it is NOW during Advent. We can show all those around us a better way of preparing for Christmas, by really doing and honoring Advent. There is nothing greater than a strong Advent to counter the materialism, selfishness, pride, and greed that so mark the secular celebration of Christmas these days. That doesn’t mean that we don’t have fun and enjoy this time of year. Doing Advent certainly doesn’t ask us to be miserable while everybody else is having fun. In fact, quite the opposite. The anticipation of a great Advent, and the joy and happiness that it brings, should only make our celebration of Christmas, when we finally get there, that much more fun and special! So let’s get ready for Jesus’s Birthday and His Second Coming! Let us pray more and listen more. Let us get excit ed about what’s coming for all of us, but that is not here yet. Didn’t know if you saw or noticed a news report out of St. Louis last week that has very special significance for us as people of Faith. A St. Louis area religious goods store was attacked by a sick man with a gun. Three woman were in the store at the time, two store workers and one customer. The man with a gun forced the three women into a back corner of the store, and insisted, at gun point, that they submit to his sexual abuse. The two store workers complied with his demands, fearing for their lives. The third woman, the customer, who according to her friends was probably in the store to purchase materials for her Rosary -making ministry, would not submit. Even after having just witnessed the sexual assault of the two women beside her, Jamie Schmidt, 53 years old, and a mother of three, just said “No.” And for not allowing her purity, her personal dignity, and her marriage covenant to be violated, Jamie Schmidt was shot immediately, at point-blank range, in the head. She died later that evening. Remember this story and this brave woman’s name, because Jamie is poised to become the first native -born American woman martyr. She also becomes the first native-born American martyr to die on U.S. soil. Just last year, Pope Francis beautified Blessed Stanley Rother, a La Salette priest from Oklahoma, who was murdered in 1981 while ministering to the poor in Guatemala. Blessed Stanley is now on track to be the first native-born American man to be declared by the Church as Saint and Martyr. Like St. Maria Goretti, Jamie Schmidt died for what she believed in and for her purity. This was not a thousand years ago, or even a hundred years ago. This was last week in St. Louis, Missouri, in the good old U.S.A.! May Jamie and Blessed Stanley inspire all of us to live more for Christ! This Advent, these next few weeks, let us live as Saints! In these strange days where the broken vows and perversions of a few horrible priests, and the lies and cover-ups of a few of our leaders, have so dominated the headlines and tarnished the image of our Church, it’s time we take back the Church’s reputation with holiness, prayer, and courage in livin g out our Faith! I believe that there are a whole lot more Jamie Schmidts and Stanley Rothers out there. We are the Church. And if we want the Church to be Holy, then we must be Holy! Let’s let that be our goal for this Advent! See you at Breakfast with St. Nick this morning and the Altar Rosary Society’s Bake Sale after Mass. In Christ, Fr. Kevin A rich person is not the person who has the most, but is the one who needs the least. Welcome! For more than 22 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do —our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meetin g you!
