Below is a list of photo credits for each picture in this book. In some cases we didn't know who took the shot, but instead listed the individual who sent it to us. Some of the photos don't have any credits, either because we don't know who took them, or somehow lost the information. The pictures are listed by page and identified with a short phrase. John Marconi Jim Howell finishing 7th in Mission Bay Marathon, 1971 Tom Bache BACK Cartoon Lee Holley PREFACE In an attempt to meet the needs of the long distance runner in Northern California, the West Valley Track Club is publishing the first ever Northern California Distance Running Annual. With the sport becoming so popular, we thought it was time for the be ginning of a "Yearbook", dealing not only with the top name run ners, but with all those who help make a contribution, by parti cipation. Admittedly, we have not hit every runner in the Paci fic Association, but we have tried to give a good cross section of our running populace, all the way from 6 to 7 years up thru those over 100 (only one that we know of). Certainly no other athletic event can claim such a wide range of ages, and that is what makes our sport so rewarding... everyone can get into the act. Distance running in the Pacific Association has grown so popular that today there are nearly 2000 long distance runners that are registered with the A. A. U. Obviously there are count less others that run for high schools and colleges who never run in the A. A.U, sanctioned events. With this large number of ath letes comes a wide range of abilities. There are Olympians and there are joggers on both extremes...but, all who run share com mon bonds. This togetherness, so to speak, is portrayed where ver you find distance running. It is caused perhaps by the know ledge that each individual, no matter what his talent, must go through the same pleasures and tortures in the pursuit of his own excellence. Running is a sport that the entire family can take part in, benefiting the body both physiologically and psycholo gically. We have tried to cover all phases of distance running: age group, high school, collegiate, open, seniors, women and more. Admittedly we are weak in some areas, mostly because of the lack of information and pictures.

  • Well Done, Elaine!
Well Done, Elaine! A fine season by Jamaica's Elaine Thompson-Herah has gotten the acclaim it deserves, with her selection to the top five nominees for the prestigious Female World Athlete of the Year. With four wind legal sub-11 clockings for the 100 metres in 2020, Thompson-Herah reached two other important landmarks as she tuned up for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics. Her four fast 100 metres races - 10.88 seconds on August 8; 10.92 on the 22; 10.85 in Rome to take the world lead on September 17 and a season ending 10.87 in Doha on September 25 - pushed her career sub-11 total to 34. Only six other women have broken the 11 second barrier more often. The top three on that list are all Jamaicans - Merlene Ottey with 67 sub-11 times, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce on 54 and Veronica Campbell-Brown on 49. Elaine's Rome race put her level with East Germany's 1983 World Champion Marlies Gohr on 33. The tie was broken in Doha a week later. When you add her wind-aided 10.73 seconds time done at Jamaica College on July 25, her undefeated 100 metre season looks even better. 2020 is also the sixth consecutive season in which the 2016 double Olympic champion has broken 11 seconds. Given the pain she has endured due to Achilles tendon trouble, her consistency is noteworthy. In fact, only three other women – Fraser-Pryce, young American Sha'Carri Richardson and Bahamian wonder Shaunae Miller-Uibo - ran under 11 seconds all year.

`Once Upon A Time By William Fink The Beginnings Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, sometime after Harvey discovered the circulation of blood, or maybe it was after Lavoisier discovered oxygen (I'm not sure), Leroy "Bud" Getchell returned to Ball State after obtaining his doctorate from the University of Illinois, having sat at the feet of one T. K. Cureton. "We need to start an exercise physiology lab," he said, with stethoscope and Heartometer in hand. And so he did. That was 1965. He bought a Monarck ergometer, much to the dismay of the University, who thought that $500 was quite a lot of money for a bicycle without wheels. Now Bud was busy about many things. He was enlisting men in a noon fitness jogging program, and selling them Tiger running shoes to boot. He was teaching his share of classes, trying to fund a couple hundred hobbies, AND he was coaching the Ball State basketball team. So, he said, not yet having his priorities in order, "We need to hire someone to run this exercise physiology lab." And so they did. And that was 1966. They had a choice 1965. Leroy "Bud" Getchell between a young, talented researcher and scholar working with two members of the or David L. Costill, who barely made it through Adult Physical Fitness group. Bud college. They hired Costill, and that was the conceived the idea and gained the beginning of the Human Performance approval of BSU administration Laboratory. And that brings us to this first picture. to establish a Human As it turned out, Costill was a man driven.
