This self-study is primarily written for the external mid-term review committee of recognized scholars in the fields of research in which our research institute is active. To make sure the report provides the committee with a thorough overview of our areas of expertise, the output realised, and the strategies and policies we developed, we also included relevant facts related to our activities in 2014. The report is accompanied by several annexes, which are digitally available to the committee. Of course, we are more than willing to answer any remaining questions of the committee before or during the site visit of FASoS, which is scheduled to take place on January 13, 2015. This report was written in line with the Standard Evaluation Protocol 2009-2015 (SEP), the protocol for research assessment in the Netherlands approved by the Association of Dutch Universities (VSNU), the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). SEP requires a self-evaluation and an external review once every six years, as well as an internal mid-term review in between two external reviews. The main objective of this mid-term review is to evaluate our results and activities following the recommendations of the previous external assessment in 2011 and to formulate plans for future actions and activities. In this regard, we are confident to profit from the expertise and experience of the international committee members, and we highly welcome their evaluation of our Research Institute. In various places in this report we give specific account of our response to the feedback received in the context of the previous external assessment (covering the period 2005-2011). We particularly invite the committee members to share their thoughts on our policy decisions. The 2014 committee is made up of six experts from areas directly associated with the research performed at FASoS: • Prof. dr. Isa Baud (University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences – Department of Human Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, The Netherlands). • Prof. dr. Willy Janssen (Radboud University Nijmegen, Institute for Gender Studies, The Netherlands). • Prof. dr. Nelly Oudshoorn (University of Twente, Science, Technology, and Policy Studies, The Netherlands). • Prof. dr. Eric Vanhaute (Ghent University, Department of History, Belgium). • Prof. dr. Ginette Verstraete (VU University Amsterdam, Faculty of Arts, Department of Arts and Culture, The Netherlands). This self-evaluation report consists of five parts. Part I provides an overall description and analysis of our Research Institute. The work of the research programmes is presented in Part II of this report. The centres are discussed in Part III. And in Part IV we describe the efforts of our Graduate School (GS). The chapters of the various parts were written by the respective directors of the research programmes, centres and GS. The annexes accompanying this report are available via a secure website. Plastics discarded off improperly end up in the environment, both land and water, where they may be transported to the seas and oceans. Rivers are transportation pathways that carry litter into the seas and oceans. The general picture of plastic litter in the Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt rivers is complex partly because many different organizations are involved and data on plastic litter are not collected systematically. An overview has been prepared of available data and data gaps. The data were analysed and used for a preliminary assessment of the contribution by Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt to the plastic waste in the North Sea. Based on the limited data on removal of litter by contractors and collection of litter by volunteers in flood plains, measurements of transported litter indicate that about 15,000 m3 macroplastic litter entered the North Sea yearly in the period 2000 to 2012.

Maastricht is the perfect setting for a university city, with many festivals and events reflecting a diversity of cultural influences, from Maastricht's famous annual Carnival to experimental theatre, from thought-provoking lectures to lively music concerts.

Coronavirus, plagues of locusts, fire and flood, war, in its age- old forms continues, and conquest takes on newer subtler disguises. There has never been a more important or more difficult time to work in public health. Many have heard me say this, most recently in Porto. ASPHER will continue to argue for the re-establishment of effective public health systems, for the control of communicable disease; pandemics are the most extreme concern, but not the daily concern. We greatly value our partnerships with WHO, ECDC, and other national and international bodies working tirelessly on coronavirus at present, and particularly in our work developing capacity and training. The public health community, however, appears to be uninvolved in the new disaster of the desert locust plague. This now affecting East Africa, the Horn of Africa, extending through Yemen and as far as Pakistan. It is undoubtedly linked to global climate breakdown. A new wave of the plague is anticipated in April and our responses have been weak. I shall be pleased to hear from anyone connected with the problem- directly The EU flag flying high in the Middleton st as public health agencies or working with the UN Food and household on 31 January 2020 – a sad day for all Europeans.
