This section contains background essays on Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, European Americans, Mexican Americans, Puerto Rican Americans, Angel Island, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. These essays have been developed from the main resource books in the Americans All® collection and have been created to meet both the language and social studies requirements of grade levels three and four. 1 A map of the Louisiana Territory, 1814 Introduction The 1803 Louisiana Purchase from France during Thomas Jefferson’s first term as president more than doubled the size of the United States. Jefferson’s next step was to learn all about this new territory of the United States. He chose Meriwether Lewis, a former army captain and his own private secretary, to lead the expedition. Lewis chose another army captain, William Clark, to join him and put together the team. Clark’s exceptional mapmaking skills proved invaluable, and he kept detailed records throughout the journey. They left St. Louis, Missouri, in May 1804 and reached the Pacific Ocean near what would become Columbia, Oregon, in November 1805. Their primary task was to survey the new lands west of the Mississippi River and to locate a water route to the Pacific. They kept meticulous journals about plant and animal life, rocks and minerals, weather conditions, and a wide variety of other details about this new territory. Another important goal was to initiate good relationships with the American Indians. During the winter, a French Canadian trader, Toussaint Charbonneau, and his wife, Sacagawea, a Shoshone Indian, joined the expedition. Sacagawea was instrumental in introducing Lewis and Clark to Native Americans. She acted as a translator and presented the expedition as peaceful. The expedition returned to Missouri in September 1806 with valuable maps. After Lewis’s death in 1809, Clark took responsibility for organizing and releasing the expedition journals to eager scientists and curious Americans. OFFICIAL BUSINESS OF THE UNITED STATES BRIEFING: Agent, the United States government is currently seeking to purchase land from Canada in order to add more territory for future states. In order to fully understand what the United States government can expect from this massive land deal, we have to understand how the only other deal of this magnitude “went down.” We desperately need your help in solving these key questions regarding the “Louisiana Territory.” Here is what we know about the Louisiana Territory: In 1803, President Thomas Je fferson purchased a massive plot of land (may have done so illegally) that more than doubled the size of the United States. This land is referred to as the Louisiana Territory. Just like today, the United States was very enthusiastic about acquiring new territories; after all, this allows for more states to be admied to the Union and will help support our growing population. However, the last thing a prosperous country like us needs is to be indebted to a country forever, or to have been “duped” into buying a useless piece of land. A picture of the land in question is included below. We need your help! Use the following documents to answer the questions below about the Louisiana Territory. You should submit documentation of each question on thee appropriate “Louisiana Territory Briefing Submission” form. Agent, there is one more thing I must mention. Westward Movement & Settling Oregon Country
I. WHY DID AMERICANS MOVE WEST? A. Many people looked west of the Appalachian Mountains for land to settle B. The population in early 1800’s America was starting to grow. C. This made land more expensive as there was less of it to buy. II. NORTHWEST ORDINANCE A. The Northwest Ordinance was agreed upon in 1784 and was divided up so that individuals could buy the land. B. This was a much needed source of revenue for the U.S. gov’t, as there were still many debts to pay. C. Louisiana Purchase made even more land available for westward expansion. III. HEADING INTO THE WEST A. Some of the territories were gained through war 1. Florida was gained when General Andrew Jackson invaded and Spain surrendered. 2. Oregon was gained in a settlement to avoid a war. B. To settle all these new lands, settlers would follow the rivers. 1. Rivers offered the easiest mode of transportation. 2. Settlers would load their animals and wagons onto flatboats. IV. THE AMERICAN SYSTEM A. Henry Clay promoted his “American System” as an economic system that would benefit agriculture, merchants, and industry. 1. Tariffs would be raised to protect industry. 2. The National Bank would make loans to promote business growth. 3. The tariffs and the sale of public lands would provide funds for the building of roads, canals, and other improvements. V. TECHNOLOGY SPEEDS TRANSPORTATION A. The advent of the steamboat made going upstream easier and made shipping much cheaper. B. The Erie Canal connected the Great Lakes to the Mohawk and Hudson rivers. -
