A long-term groundwater quality survey has revealed that 20% of the groundwater in southern Taiwan’s Pingtung Plain is clearly contaminated with a measured As concentration in excess of the maximum level of 10 µg/L recommended by the World Health Organization. The situation is further complicated by the fact that more than half of the inhabitants in this area continue to use groundwater for drinking. Efforts to assess the health risk associated with the ingestion of As from the contaminated drinking water are required in order to determine the priorities for health risk management.

  • Molecular Epidemiology of Japanese Encephalitis Virus in Mosquitoes in Taiwan During 2005–2012
Molecular Epidemiology of Japanese Encephalitis Virus in Mosquitoes in Taiwan during 2005–2012 Chien-Ling Su1, Cheng-Fen Yang1, Hwa-Jen Teng1, Liang-Chen Lu1, Cheo Lin1, Kun-Hsien Tsai2,3,4,Yu- Yu Chen1, Li-Yu Chen1, Shu-Fen Chang1, Pei-Yun Shu1* 1 Center for Research, Diagnostics and Vaccine Development, Centers for Disease Control, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Taiwan, Republic of China, 2 Institute of Environmental Health, College of Public Health, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, 3 Department of Public Health, College of Public Health, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, 4 Infectious Diseases Research and Education Center, Ministry of Health and Welfare and National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China Abstract Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic disease caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). Pigs and water birds are the main amplifying and maintenance hosts of the virus. In this study, we conducted a JEV survey in mosquitoes captured in pig farms and water bird wetland habitats in Taiwan during 2005 to 2012. A total of 102,633 mosquitoes were collected. Culex tritaeniorhynchus was the most common mosquito species found in the pig farms and wetlands. Among the 26 mosquito species collected, 11 tested positive for JEV by RT-PCR, including Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, Cx. annulus, Anopheles sinensis, Armigeres subalbatus, andCx. fuscocephala. Among those testing positive, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus was the predominant vector species for the transmission of JEV genotypes I and III in Taiwan. The JEV infection rate was significantly higher in the mosquitoes from the pig farms than those from the wetlands. A phylogenetic analysis of the JEV envelope gene sequences isolated from the captured mosquitoes demonstrated that the predominant JEV genotype has shifted from genotype III to genotype I (GI), providing evidence for transmission cycle maintenance and multiple introductions of the GI strains in Taiwan during 2008 to 2012.

  • The Study of Green Hotel Chains Use Green Power in Heating Or Boiling System by Environmentally Friendly Technology Ze-Yung Wang
2017 Asia-Pacific Engineering and Technology Conference (APETC 2017) ISBN: 978-1-60595-443-1 The Study of Green Hotel Chains Use Green Power in Heating or Boiling System by Environmentally Friendly Technology Ze-yung Wang ABSTRACT Nowadays economic business chain hotels are developing vigorously in China. To comply with the national standard on green hotel, they have also participated in the construction of green hotel actively. Therefore, it is a significance study about how to mitigate the pollution caused by the room hot water system in economic business hotels, make them develop towards the green hotel under the condition of affordable investment. No big changes on the main equipment and create the brilliant sales performance based on environmental protection and ecological conservation. The application of the refined environmental protection fuel oil in the hot water supply system of green hotels-economic business hotels can effectively reduce the air pollutant emissions in the research. Through the use of the clean renewable fuels, it can achieve the expectation of green hotels for energy saving and carbon reduction. In addition, matching the refined environmental protection fuel oil with B14G catalyst is at low cost. In terms of the combustion efficiency, due to its good liquidity and cleanness, it can be directly used in the equipment without modification, so the green hoteliers have no risk and burden to modify the equipment. For the green hotels-economic business hotels, the long-term fuel cost is still a very high burden. However, the cost of hot water produced by Model-3 refined fuel oil-fired boiler in the research reduces to USD $0.085 per MJ.

  • Clarification of the Molecular Pathway of Taiwan Local Pomegranate Fruit
Wu et al. BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine (2016) 16:96 DOI 10.1186/s12906-016-1071-7 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Clarification of the molecular pathway of Taiwan local pomegranate fruit juice underlying the inhibition of urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma cell by proteomics strategy Ting-Feng Wu*, Li-Ting Hsu, Bo-Xian Tsang, Li-Chien Huang, Wan-Yin Shih and Li-Yi Chen Abstract Background: Pomegranate fruit has been shown to exhibit the inhibitory activity against prostate cancer and lung cancer in vitro and in vivo, which might be a resource for chemoprevention and chemotherapy of cancer. Our previous documented findings indicated that treatment of urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma cell with the ethanol extract isolated from the juice of pomegranate fruit grown in Taiwan could inhibit tumor cell. In this study we intended to uncover the molecular pathway underlying anti-cancer efficacy of Taiwan pomegranate fruit juice against urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma. Methods: We exploited two-dimensional gel electrophoresis coupled with tandem mass spectrometry to find the de-regulated proteins. Western immunoblotting was used to confirm the results collected from proteomics study. Results: Comparative proteomics indicated that 20 proteins were differentially expressed in ethanol extract-treated T24 cells with 19 up-regulated and 1 down-regulated proteins. These de-regulated proteins were involved in apoptosis, cytoskeleton regulation, cell proliferation, proteasome activity and aerobic glycolysis. Further studies on signaling pathway demonstrated that ethanol extract treatment might inhibit urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma cell proliferation through restriction of PTEN/AKT/mTORC1 pathway via profilin 1 up-regulation. It also might evoke cell apoptosis through Diablo over-expression.
