Contact: [email protected] 1 Digital Surrealism: Visualizing Walt Disney Animation Studios Abstract There are a number of fruitful digital humanities approaches to cinema and media studies, but most of them only pursue traditional forms of scholarship by extracting a single variable from the audiovisual text that is already legible to scholars. Instead, cinema and media studies should pursue a mostly-ignored “digital-surrealism” that uses computer-based methods to transform film texts in radical ways not previously possible. This article describes one such method using the z-projection function of the scientific image analysis software ImageJ to sum film frames in order to create new composite images. Working with the fifty-four feature-length films from Walt Disney Animation Studios, I describe how this method allows for a unique understanding of a film corpus not otherwise available to cinema and media studies scholars. “Technique is the very being of all creation” — Roland Barthes “We dig up diamonds by the score, a thousand rubies, sometimes more, but we don't know what we dig them for” — The Seven Dwarfs There are quite a number of fruitful digital humanities approaches to cinema and media studies, which vary widely from aesthetic techniques of visualizing color and form in shots to data-driven metrics approaches analyzing editing patterns. -

Production Notes
A Film by John Madden Production Notes Synopsis Even the best secret agents carry a debt from a past mission. Rachel Singer must now face up to hers… Filmed on location in Tel Aviv, the U.K., and Budapest, the espionage thriller The Debt is directed by Academy Award nominee John Madden (Shakespeare in Love). The screenplay, by Matthew Vaughn & Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan, is adapted from the 2007 Israeli film Ha-Hov [The Debt]. At the 2011 Beaune International Thriller Film Festival, The Debt was honoured with the Special Police [Jury] Prize. The story begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (played by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren) and Stephan (two-time Academy Award nominee Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciarán Hinds of the upcoming Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy). All three have been venerated for decades by Israel because of the secret mission that they embarked on for their country back in 1965-1966, when the trio (portrayed, respectively, by Jessica Chastain [The Tree of Life, The Help], Marton Csokas [The Lord of the Rings, Dream House], and Sam Worthington [Avatar, Clash of the Titans]) tracked down Nazi war criminal Dieter Vogel (Jesper Christensen of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace), the feared Surgeon of Birkenau, in East Berlin. While Rachel found herself grappling with romantic feelings during the mission, the net around Vogel was tightened by using her as bait. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team’s mission was accomplished – or was it? The suspense builds in and across two different time periods, with startling action and surprising revelations that compel Rachel to take matters into her own hands. -

Rey-Lynn Little Graduate Student of Journalism B.A
Outline for SASSI: Signs in International Media: The Image of the Journalist in Anime Rey-Lynn Little Graduate Student of Journalism B.A. Sociology and B. A. Communication Studies, Northeastern State University, 2016 University of Colorado Boulder 16 March 2020 I: Introduction A. What is anime? Well, in short it is animation--a cinematic art form. In Japan, manga and anime are a basic transmission of culture through media spanning the past three generations. Anime is either an original or more often than not adapted from a popular manga, which can be more easily understood as comic books or graphic novels. B. This medium will likely be seen by many viewers of younger generations as audiences become increasingly international and transglobal. Because of this, it feels important to examine the symbolic impact the mediated culture could have on individual and social lives. C. This presentation positions anime as relevant to current personal, historical, cultural, and political perspectives towards discerning the view of the journalist in popular culture, given the growing trend of anime media within the United States. II. Research Question-How can popular culture be used to represent journalists and their subjects, and why does this matter? A. Research on the topic of anime has often been focused on education and teaching methods but is lacking in other areas, such as journalism. B. The ultimate purpose of this research is to explore mediated messages, visual and textual, within anime through a journalistic lens. C. Matthews relates that there exists a gap in the literature concerning contemporary news media coverage of Japan, but there is a “sizeable body of recent work” considering the “representations of Japan through popular culture, including mass media products such as film and television” (2019, p. -
