L’objet mérite considé- ration. Il suffit de visiter le superbe Musée français de la Carte à jouer à Issy-les-Moulineaux pour se convaincre de l’immense intérêt de ces petits bouts de cartons colorés. La carte à jouer touche à tout : histoire politique, fiscalité, religion, gravure, couleurs, satire, sexe, histoire sociale et économique, art, histoire des techniques (im- pression, papier, etc.). D’où viennent les cartes à jouer ? D’Orient, sûrement. Mais, entre la Chine, qui est bien placée pour en être le foyer originel, l’Inde et le Proche-Orient, d’où viennent certainement nos premières cartes à jouer, arrivées vers le milieu du XIVe siècle et vite adoptées dans l’Europe entière, on hésite encore aujourd’hui. De cette période nous n’avons pas gardé d’autres traces que des mentions dans les archives ; les plus anciens jeux conservés datent des années 1430-50. Parmi eux, citons les célèbres tarots viscontéens peints par Bonifacio Bembo entre 1440 et 1450 pour les ducs de Milan. Ce sont des jeux princiers, peints à la main, qui doivent à leur exceptionnelle qualité d’exécution les soins dont on les a entourés. Collectionner les cartes à jouer n’est pas une passion récente : déjà au XVIIe siècle, l’érudit parisien François Roger de Gaignières avait su constituer un ensemble remarquable, au- jourd’hui à la BnF, dont le célèbre tarot dit de Charles VI, qui date en réalité du milieu du XVe siècle, est l’emblème le plus connu. Il n’y a pas de tarots enluminés ni de cartes médiévales dans la collection Letellier. Mais l’éventail chronologique couvert va tout de même du XVIe siècle à la fin du XXe siècle. En effet, et bien qu’ils ne soient ni des tarots ni des œuvres de Mantegna, deux « Tarots de Mantegna », copiés par le graveur allemand Johann Ladenspelder vers 1540-50, Apollo et Philosofia, seront proposés à la vente. Le Grand Siècle est représenté par quelques- uns des jeux instructifs les plus célèbres, tel le Jeu d’armoiries des souverains et estats d’Europe, de Finé de Brianville, ici dans sa première édition (Lyon, 1665) ou Les tables de geographie réduites en un jeu de cartes, par Pierre Duval, « Géographe du Roy », 1669 ; à quoi s’ajoutent quelques témoins plus humbles, tel ce fragment de planche de valets rouges au portrait de Guyenne (XVIIIe siècle), quelques jeux au portrait de Paris, tous antérieurs à 1800. Lot 432 2 C’est que l’Ancien Régime disposait d’une étonnante variété de « portraits » – d’Auvergne, de Bourgogne, de Guyenne, du Languedoc, de Provence, de Lyon, de Paris… – dont plusieurs sont présents dans la collection Letellier. Le XIXe siècle n’est pas moins fourni, mais ici la fantaisie règne : jeux républicains, « Cartes historiques » de Houbigant (deux versions, 1817 et 1818), Jeu des Drapeaux (1816), et autres. La cartomancie n’est pas oubliée avec de très charmants exemples. Mais les cartes françaises ne sont pas seules. L’Allemagne est solidement représentée avec un magnifique jeu au portrait de Bavière (vers 1820) et un rare tarot animalier de G.L. Timmermann à Lübeck (vers 1800). La belle production en chromolithographie du fabricant Dondorf est aussi présente. L’Autriche, le Danemark et l’Espagne, la Belgique (et même la Hollande), la Grande-Bretagne et la Suisse, le Portugal et le Brésil sont au rendez- vous, sans oublier les États-Unis ni l’Italie avec ses portraits si attachants et ses tarots aux multiples modèles. C’est dire l’étendue de la collection proposée. Les amateurs de tarots trouveront leur bonheur, aussi bien parmi les tarots à couleurs italiennes que parmi ceux à couleurs françaises, qu’ils soient al- lemands, autrichiens, italiens et, bien sûr, français. Sans parler des tarots plus orientés vers la divination. Lot 87 L’Asie n’est pas oubliée, avec plusieurs de ces merveilleux jeux de cartes indiens peints à la main – « Moghul ganjifah » – éblouissants de couleurs, dont les boîtes en bois peint ne sont pas les moindres attraits. L’Iran offre quelques cartes d’« as-nas », aussi peintes et vernies. Et l’Afrique, continent souvent négligé, débutera la vente : un lot de cinq jeux modernes, tous produits en Afrique, rendra ainsi hommage à ce continent. L’éclectisme de la collection Letellier se traduit aussi par d’amusants jeux non-conventionnels – jeux de 7 fa- milles, Quartette, Snap, et autres – et quelques rares jeux d’artiste en tirages limités. L’érotisme n’est pas absent non plus. Toute une bibliothèque de documentation spécialisée et quelques objets clôtureront la vente – dont quatre ex- ceptionnels coffrets à jetons en ivoire gravé et teint de Mariaval à Rouen (1re moitié du XVIIIe siècle). 3 AFRIQUE 1 7 Cinq jeux venus d’Afrique : Jeu célébrant Jeu des Quatre continents : B. Additionally, a deck has kings, queens, and jacks as face cards as well as number cards 2 through 10. Instead of a 1, th ere is an ace which has the highest value. There are also two jokers which some times are not used. These modern suits were adopted into tradition from 15th-century French playing cards. Card games were introduced to Europe in approximately the middle of t he 14th century, probably from the Near East through Venice or from the Mamluk sultanate in Egypt through southern Italy, Sicily, or even Spain (Husband). Early card decks in Italy incorporated suits such as Cups ( copper), Swords ( spade), Batons ( gastonia), and Coins ( denari). Playing cards in Germany did not follow any standardized symbolism until the late 15th century when the suits became Acorns ( Eichel), Leafs (Laub), Hearts ( Herz), and Bells ( Schele). Additionally, the number of cards in German decks often varied.
