Shepway & District U3a Members Film Night Invitation SHEPWAY & DISTRICT U3A MEMBERS FILM NIGHT INVITATION The Members Film Night is held monthly on the 1st Wednesday of each month. The start time is 6pm unless otherwise notified. Doors open at 5.30pm. The event is held at the Tin Tabernacle, Hythe but due to the hall not being available on January 2nd, it will be held on January 2nd at the Pavilion, South Road, Hythe instead. The evening costs £10 per person which includes the meal and light refreshments. Bookings close on the Friday before each scheduled event. No refunds are available after this date. • January 2nd – ‘Star Wars Episode IV – A new Hope’. This is the first film made in the Star Wars series even if the title is Episode IV. Winner of seven academy awards. A truly exciting and entertaining film. Stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness, David Prowse, James Earl Jones, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker and Peter Mayhew. Menu: Chicken Curry / vegetarian equivalent available • February 6th – ‘The Greatest Showman’. Hugh Jackman leads an all star cast in this bold and original musical filled with infectious showstopping performances that will bring you to your feet time and time again. Inspired by the story of P.T. Barnum and celebrating the birth of show business. The film tells the story. Menu: Beef Cobbler / vegetarian equivalent available. • March 6th – ‘The Blind Side’. Starring Sandra Bullock, this is a real life story about a homeless teenager that is brought into a family and through the support of the family becomes an American football star. The performance of Sandra Bullock won her best actress academy award in 2009. A most enjoyable film.     Survey: Both Democrats and GOP love 'This Is Us,' 'Game of Thrones' BY JUDY KURTZ - 03/03/20 © Courtesy of HBO The country may be more politically polarized than ever, but there are at least a couple things that both Democrats and Republicans agree on: They dig "This is Us" and "Game of Thrones." The NBC drama and former HBO fantasy series were some of the top picks on both sides of the aisle, according to a recent survey from E-Poll Market Research. Fifty-five percent of Democrats counted "This is Us" as their fave broadcast TV show, along with 68 percent of Republicans. Fifty-two percent of Democrats and 47 percent of Republicans surveyed also listed "Chicago Med" as one of their top TV picks. Other popular choices among Democrats included "Supernatural," Fox's "9-1-1" and "The Rookie," while Republicans said they delighted in "Grey's Anatomy," "Last Man Standing" and Chicago PD." The two parties had more than half of the top 20 TV shows in common, but there were a few notable differences among their boob tube choices. The results show that, of the Americans surveyed, Democrats prefer getting more laughs from their small screen fare, picking seven sitcoms as their favorites, compared to the GOP respondents' three comedy shows. A separate survey of top streaming and cable shows found that Democrats preferred Starz's "Power," with 63 percent of those surveyed naming it as their favored show, and "Game of Thrones," with 51 percent.     KEN CLARKE - MY PROFESSIONAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY When I left junior school at the age of twelve my plastering career started at the well known building Arts & Craft Secondary School, ‘Christopher Wren’, and from this early age I was particularly interested in fibrous plastering. It was a known fact that, of a class of 16, two of the pupils, after four years of schooling, would start their training at a major film studio. I passed my GCE in Building Craft, Paintwork and Plasterwork (copy 1 attached) and was one of the lucky two to be chosen to start training at Shepperton Studios. This was my first achievement (copy 2 – letter of engagement, 9 June 1964, attached). I started Shepperton Studios in the plastering Dept on 22 June 1964 under conditions of a six-month probationary period and a further 4 and half years. During this five-year apprenticeship, I was to do through the block release system, eight weeks at work and two weeks at Art & Craft College ‘Lime Grove’. At the end of five years I was awarded my basic and final City and Guilds in plastering (basic June 1966 and final June 1968 – copies 3 and 4 attached). This was a big achievement for any young man – for me; it was the beginning of a big career. After my five years I was presented with one of the very last certificates of apprenticeship offered by the ‘Film Industry Training Apprenticeship Council’. Thus, my apprenticeship came to an end.
