Whipping up duds worn a long time ago by the denizens of galaxies far, far away twould be a daunting challenge for any designer, but for the amazing Trisha Biggar, it is all in a day’s work. “Her ability to manage, move, design, build, locate and scrounge was a rare find,”says Star Wars producer, Rick McCallum. The unflappable Glasgow native takes it all in stride, crediting Lucas’s own vision and hands-on involvement with her success. Having trained at Wimbledon School of Art, Biggar worked in the United Kingdom in noted theater companies such as the Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre and Opera North in Leeds. Her film credits include Silent Scream, Wild West, and The Magdalene Sisters. She has also designed for numerous television series; among them Moll Flanders for which she received a BAFTA nomination for Best Costume Design, and The Young Indiana Jones ANAKIN SKYWALKER AND PADMÉ AMIDALA in Wedding Ensembles, from Attack of the Clones. Digital dialectics: the paradox of cinema in a studio without walls Scott McQuire There’s a scene in Forrest Gump (Robert Zemeckis, Paramount Pictures; USA, 1994) which encapsulates the novel potential of the digital threshold. The scene itself is nothing spectacular. It involves neither exploding spaceships, marauding dinosaurs, nor even the apocalyptic destruction of a postmodern cityscape. Rather, it depends entirely on what has been made invisible within the image. The scene, in which actor Gary Sinise is shown in hospital after having his legs blown off in battle, is noteworthy partly because of the way that director Robert Zemeckis handles it. Sinise has been clearly established as a full-bodied character in earlier scenes. When we first see him in hospital, he is seated on a bed with the stumps of his legs resting at its edge. The assumption made by most spectators, whether consciously or unconsciously, is that the shot is tricked up; that Sinise’s legs are hidden beneath the bed, concealed by a hole cut through the mattress. This would follow a long line of film practice in faking amputations, inaugurated by the famous stop-motion beheading in the Edison Company’s Death of Mary Queen of Scots (aka The Execution of Mary Stuart, Thomas A. -

SHIRLEY MACLAINE TO RECEIVE 40th AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD America’s Highest Honor for a Career in Film to be Presented June 7, 2012 LOS ANGELES, CA, October 9, 2011 – Sir Howard Stringer, Chair of the American Film Institute’s Board of Trustees, announced today the Board’s decision to honor Shirley MacLaine with the 40th AFI Life Achievement Award, the highest honor for a career in film. The award will be presented to MacLaine at a gala tribute on Thursday, June 7, 2012 in Los Angeles, CA. TV Land will broadcast the 40th AFI Life Achievement Award tribute on TV Land later in June 2012. The event will celebrate MacLaine’s extraordinary life and all her endeavors – movies, television, Broadway, author and beyond. "Shirley MacLaine is a powerhouse of personality that has illuminated screens large and small across six decades," said Stringer. Films for Exploring Peace and Justice Themes Many youth and adult groups have discovered the value of films for education and outreach. Films may be shown singly or as part of a series. One group organized a “Tuesday Evenings at the Movies” series, served popcorn, and had a great time. Most of these films have short segments that can be used to teach specific peace and justice insights or skills, and can encourage folks to see the rest of the film. Below are films that we’ve found to be especially effective. (Well-known stars and directors are in parentheses.) John 15:12f There are several words in Greek for the one English word, “love”. I thought I would illustrate their meaning with reference to Hollywood. The first two words are Eros (ἔρως) which means to be infatuated with a person, an object or an idea, and storge (στοργή), which is familial love, the love of parents (and grandparents) for their children. Then two other words: φιλέω and ἀγαπάω. The first means to have a warm affection for another and the second, to wish one well. The ancient Greeks considered Eros to be dangerous and frightening as it involved a “loss of control,” as though to say, “I couldn’t help myself.” It is the appreciation of beauty both external and within. It’s what we view frequently on the silver screen. I would guess that most movies at the moment are romances. To be a success in my book they need to have a memorable musical score and demonstrate that “the path of true love never did run smooth.”1 The lovers need to fight, separate, or even die. I have chosen West Side Story (1957), Leonard Bernstein’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.2 The Jets and the Sharks are two gangs who are bitter enemies, fighting for turf in New York City. Tony and Maria, members of rival gangs, fall in love and sing: “Make of our hands one hand; make of our hearts one heart.” After the rumble, Chino who was engaged to marry Maria shoots Tony and he dies in his lover’s arms. -
