2020 EDINA LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Listed below are the scholarships/grants for senior students planning to attend colleges (including 2-year and technical colleges) and universities next year. Please note that many of the scholarships have specific eligibility requirements including a minimum GPA. Other selection criteria include character, contributions to school community and academic promise. Financial need is a factor in almost all cases. Therefore, in addition to your application, you must submit a copy of your letter of acceptance and either your FAFSA, SAR or financial aid statement from the school you will be attending. This information will assist in documenting your need. Any additional information regarding specific family circumstances influencing need may also be included with your application. The ONLY attachments that will be accepted are financial aid documentation and information regarding specific family circumstances influencing need. ALL other attachments will not be considered.

Application procedures: 1. Obtain general application from the Counseling Office. Every applicant should complete this general application. 2. Some scholarships (Terry Anderson Memorial Scholarship, Edina Scholarships, Edina Chamber of Commerce, Edina Girls Athletic Association, Edina Soccer Association, Home is Where the Hornet Is, League of Women Voters Edina, Rotary Club of Edina, The Schulze Family Foundation College Scholarship and Walser Driving a Stronger Community Scholarship) require an additional application. Pick up both the general and specific application from the Counseling Office or download from the Counseling Department website: www.edinaschools.org/ehscounseling_scholarships 3. If you prefer, you may share financial aid information directly with your counselor. 4. You must include an acceptance letter from a college for the fall semester of 2020 with your application. 5. Submit completed applications to the Counseling Office by Monday, MARCH 16th by 3:30 p.m.

Everett B. Anderson Scholarship Fund: Two $1,000 awards. First consideration will be given to a senior planning to attend Gustavus Adolphus College who enjoys literature and then to a senior planning to attend a small liberal arts college. Financial need a factor.

Terry Anderson Memorial Scholarship: One $1,000 scholarship to a senior with a passion for photography or art. SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED.

Rachel and Jonathan Bartling Scholarship: One $500 scholarship awarded to a student who will attend any post-secondary institution to study some aspect of Design, Construction or Trade that contributes to the built environment. Student must excel in the classroom and in the community and have financial need.

David Bloom Memorial Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship awarded to student who has been passionate and active in Speech and Debate while attending EHS. Financial need a factor, but not required.

Stavros Canakes Memorial Scholarship: One $500 scholarship to an athlete who exemplifies the character and values modeled by Coach Canakes.

Chartwells Scholarship: One $1,500 scholarship awarded to a good student active in school/community activities pursuing a career in fields related to nutrition, education, wellness or culinary. Financial need is a factor.

Todd Chowan Memorial Scholarship: One $1,000 scholarship to a student who began French at Normandale French Immersion and continued in French through senior year. This student must have a B average, be a leader in the EHS French experience or the classroom and demonstrate enthusiasm for the French language and Francophone cultures, like Mr. Chowan. This is NOT a need based scholarship.

Art Downey /Diving Scholarship: Two $1,500 awards. The candidates shall have been a member of the Boys’ Swimming and Diving team for two or more years.

Edina Administrative Council Scholarship: One $500 award to a student with high academic performance, strong character and integrity and financial need.

Edina Athletic Booster Club Scholarships: Three $500 awards given to a varsity athlete from each of the three sports seasons, fall, winter and spring, who exemplifies outstanding sportsmanship, character and ethical conduct in the true spirit of competition and has a cumulative GPA of 3.5. Special consideration will be given those considered to be a good teammate whose positive spirit and intangibles helped create a better atmosphere for their entire team.

Edina Basketball Association - Gregg Bjork, Russ Fortner and Edward Kuffel Scholarship, Edina Basketball Association Scott Syring Scholarship and Edina Basketball Association Memorial Scholarship in Honor of Ben Barbatsis: Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to individuals who have actively participated in EBA programs as a player and/or volunteer. Recipients must have strong scholastic effort, good citizenship, and community service. SPECIAL APPLICATIONS REQUIRED.

Edina Chamber of Commerce: Three $1,000 scholarships. Students must be active in school, business, and community activities and demonstrate academic responsibility. Preference will be given to students with an interest in technology or engineering fields. Chamber affiliation is not required. SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED.

Edina Girls Athletic Association: Five scholarships for $1,500 awarded to students participating in EGAA programs as players and/or volunteers. SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED.

Edina Girls Fastpitch Association – David Wood Scholarship: One $500 scholarship. Awarded to a senior girl who is a member of the Varsity or JV softball team, has participated in Edina Girls Fastpitch Association activities, maintained a B average and exemplifies the spirit of Coach Wood through excellence both on and off the softball team.

Edina Hockey Association Scholarship: Two $1,000 scholarships (EHA) and one $500 scholarship (Anonymous Donor A). Anonymous Donor A: Awarded to a male or female who has played hockey for an Edina High School or EHA sponsored team for three consecutive years beginning with freshman year or has been a hockey cheerleader. Must be of good moral character and have financial need. EHA: Awarded to one male and one female who have played hockey for an Edina High School or EHA sponsored team for a minimum of three years beginning with freshman year. If the applicant has not played hockey senior year, must help coach an EHA sponsored team.

Edina Soccer Association Scholarship: Two $1,500 scholarships. Two scholarships awarded to seniors who have participated in ESA soccer for at least two years as players or as instructors, referees or site supervisors and have at least a “B” average. SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED.

Edina Student Manager Scholarship: One $1000 scholarship to a senior who has been a team manager for at least one season and has at least a 3.0 GPA.

Edina Woman’s Club Scholarship: Two $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to female seniors continuing their education (college, trade school, junior college, art school) whose parents are Edina residents. Financial need a factor.

Education /Edina Scholarship: Two $1,000 scholarship awarded to students, who have worked with children or adolescents in the community, maintain at least a B average, indicate an interest in becoming an educator, and have demonstrated financial need.

Constance Edwards Memorial Scholarship: Two $500 awards. The candidate must be a former Countryside student. Financial need a factor.

Art Erdall Memorial Scholarship: One $1,000 scholarship awarded to a member of the Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse team. Must be an Edina resident with C or better grades and have financial need. Preference given to team longevity. (This scholarship will rotate among the Girls’ Varsity Hockey, Lacrosse, and Basketball teams.)

Fairview Southdale Hospital Medical Staff Scholarship: Two $1,500 scholarships for students with high academic achievement, outstanding school and community citizenship.

Zachary Breck Florenzano Scholarship: One $1,200 scholarship awarded to a student participating in sports and/or music throughout high school.

Haag Family Scholarship: Five $20,000 scholarships ($5,000 each year for four years of college) to students who have the motivation and character to use this scholarship to accomplish their goals at a 4-year Minnesota , the University of Minnesota system, or a school in a neighboring state where there is a reciprocity agreement for students from Minnesota. A student can also begin post high school classes at a community college. Financial need a factor.

Home is Where the Hornet Is Scholarship: One $1000 scholarship to a student enrolled full time at Edina High School with at least a 2.5 GPA. Can be used for colleges, trade schools or certification programs. SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED.

Kopp Family Foundation Scholarship: Five $500 scholarships awarded to applicants with above average academic ability, leadership, and community and school involvement.

Walter E. Krafft Memorial Scholarship (Edina Family Physicians): Two $1,000 awards. Selection is based on leadership, community contribution, academic record and plans to pursue a career in the medical field.

League of Women Voters Edina: One $1000 scholarship awarded to a student who demonstrates active participation in government, public policy, voter education or other civic involvement while maintaining a B average. SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED.

Alec Manderscheid Memorial Scholarship: One $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a senior with high academic performance, leadership potential and commitment to community service. Further consideration will be given to a student who is part of the Edina Cycling Team and/or has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

Howard Merriman Scholar/Athlete Scholarship: Two $18,000 scholarships awarded to an outstanding male and female scholar/athlete who have demonstrated success in sports and academics.

Morningside Woman’s Club and Elaine Fernelius Memorial Scholarships: Five $2,000 scholarships to students with good potential attending a college, technical, or trade school. Students must live in the Morningside area.

Timothy Nunn Memorial Scholarship: One $1,000 scholarship to a senior who is a team player, with a strong desire to achieve academic excellence and a high moral character. The candidate must be a member of the Edina Senior Legion II or Edina Senior Recreation program sponsored by the Edina Association the summer following senior year. The candidate cannot be a member of the Edina High School Varsity baseball team or the Edina American Legion Baseball team.

Republic Waste/Edina Recycling Scholarship: Four $500 awards to students active in community activities concerned with the environment and recycling.

Rotary Club of Edina: Two $1,500 scholarships to seniors with community involvement and service, exemplifying the Rotarian concept of “Service Above Self.” Must have some involvement in Rotary programs. SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED.

The Scanlan Latin Prize: $1,000 awarded to a senior who, through outstanding Latin scholarship and a creative enthusiasm for the classics, best exemplifies the spirit of Richard Scanlan, beloved Latin teacher at Edina High School from 1954-1967.

The Schulze Family Foundation College Scholarship: Five $20,000 awards ($5,000 each year for four years of college) Eligible candidate must be a U.S citizen attending an accredited 4 year college/university, have a 3.3 GPA or higher, 22 or above ACT and meet specific financial need requirements. SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED.

Bill and Karen Torp Scholarship: Three $4,000 awards. Candidates must have been a member of the Boy’s Track team since sophomore year, an Edina resident, demonstrate a love for , and good citizenship.

Tradition Pass It On Scholarship: Three $1,000 scholarships to Edina residents who do community service locally, have held a leadership position in athletics, the arts or clubs/organizations, have lettered in at least two high school activities and have a 3.0 GPA.

Walser Driving a Stronger Community Scholarship: One $1000 scholarship awarded to a student with at least 50 hours of volunteer service during senior year (these hours cannot be a school or organization requirement, must be extracurricular) and has a 2.5 GPA or higher. SPECIAL APPLICATION REQUIRED.

West Metro Schools Credit Union Scholarship: Two $1,000 scholarships to students pursuing post-secondary education. Financial need is a factor.
