Maps Geographically and culturally the South Pacifi c is a very complex area. It includes Australia, arguably the largest island on Earth. Th e only other sizable land masses in the region are New Zealand and Papua New Guinea; the rest are tiny islands, some isolated but many that have formed cultural, geographical and political groups. Th e star lore of the peoples that have inhabited these islands is as varied and distinct as the islands themselves are, and it is diffi cult if not impossible to provide detailed maps of the whole area. At the back of the book, therefore, we have provided a selection of general maps that can be consulted throughout the reading of each chapter. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2017 213 S.R.
