Tickets for the show are $49, $59, $69, $74 and $79. Be prepared to go back in time and enjoy a retro night of music, dancing and nostalgic hits like “Ice, Ice Baby,” “Play That Funky Music,” “Fly” and “Every Morning.” Born Robert Matthew Van Winkle, Vanilla Ice first caught mainstream attention in 1990 when a local DJ decided to play “Ice Ice Baby,” a B-side track from his debut album “Hooked.” Due to the track’s quickly growing success, Ice re-released his debut, and not so successful, album, “Hooked,” under the title “To The Extreme.” This album went on to tell more than 15 million copies and once held the record for the highest selling rap record of all time. Later in 1991, Vanilla Ice decided to get involved with the movie business. He made an appearance in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” and then later scored his first feature film, “Cool as Ice.” Later that year, he released a live concert album, “Extremely Live,” which sold 500,000 copies and reached Gold status. Today, he can be seen on his home renovation reality television series, “The Vanilla Ice Project.” The show wrapped up its eighth season this past fall. Mark McGrath emerged on the music scene as the front man for the rock band Sugar Ray. The band achieved their highest success with the release of their hit single “Fly” in 1997. McGrath's personal popularity soared as he made numerous appearances on MTV, VH1 and on various talk and awards shows. He was featured on the cover of magazines such as Rolling Stone and Spin, and People magazine named him the "Sexiest Rocker" of 1998. His career landed him various television appearances, including being a co-host on “Extra,” a guest judge on “American Idol,” and a contestant on “Rock & Roll Jeopardy!,” “The Celebrity Apprentice Season 4” and “Celebrity Wife Swap.” In 2004, he performed with Sugar Ray in the 2002 “Scooby-Doo” movie. Love, Oh Love, Oh Careless Love Careless Love is perhaps the most enduring of traditional folk songs. Of obscure origins, the song’s message is that “careless love” could care less who it hurts in the process. Although the lyrics have changed from version to version, the words usually speak of the pain and heartbreak brought on by love that can take one totally by surprise. And then things go terribly wrong. In many instances, the song’s narrator threatens to kill his or her errant lover. “Love is messy like a po-boy – leaving you drippin’ in debris.” Now, this concept of love is not the sentiment of this author, but, for some, love does not always go right. In fact, it’s a folk, blues, country and jazz song all rolled into one. Bessie Smith, the Empress of the Blues, cut an extraordinary recording of the song in 1925. Lonnie Johnson of New Orleans recorded it in 1928. It is Pete Seeger’s favorite folk song. Careless Love has been recorded by Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT ANALYSIS IN MUSIC: KATY PERRY A “DARK HORSE” CANDIDATE TO SPARK CHANGE? Edward M. Christian* ABSTRACT The music industry is at a crossroad. Initial copyright infringement judgments against artists like Katy Perry and Robin Thicke threaten millions of dollars in damages, with the songs at issue sharing only very basic musical similarities or sometimes no similarities at all other than the “feel” of the song. The Second Circuit’s “Lay Listener” test and the Ninth Circuit’s “Total Concept and Feel” test have emerged as the dominating analyses used to determine the similarity between songs, but each have their flaws. I present a new test—a test I call the “Holistic Sliding Scale” test—to better provide for commonsense solutions to these cases so that artists will more confidently be able to write songs stemming from their influences without fear of erroneous lawsuits, while simultaneously being able to ensure that their original works will be adequately protected from instances of true copying. * J.D. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.

Solomon University of Southern California Rutgers University This article analyzes the print media's ideological framing of the 1991 story of boxer Sugar Ray Leonard's admission of having physically abused his wife and abused cocaine and alcohol. We examined all news stories and editorials on the Leonard story in two major daily newspapers and one national sports daily. We found that all three papers framed the story as a "drug story," while ignoring or marginalizing the "wife abuse" story. We argue that sports writers utilized an existing ideological "jocks-on-drugs" media package that framed this story as a moral drama of individual sin and public redemption. Finally, we describe and analyze the mechanisms through which the wife abuse story was ignored or marginalized.
