May Program Meeting The Intersection of Career and Community May 23

Inspired by the fact that Emerging Women Leaders are active in more than 100 non-profit organizations and looking to get even more involved, the Programming Committee and Community Involvement Committees joined together to host an event around finding balance between volunteerism and other life commitments. Emerging Women Leaders and guests heard from TEMPO Milwaukee Board Chair Tami Garrison on how to start the often overwhelming process of involvement including finding the best fit and how to leverage volunteer experience for future board service. Following Tami’s remarks, attendees had the opportunity to meet with eight local nonprofits in small breakout sessions to help further awareness and involvement within the various organizations.

“I thought this was one of the best EWL programs that I have attended. It provided helpful information to use in the short and long-term.”

June Professional Development Series “We have been acquired. Now what?” Led by Komatsu June 8

Komatsu’s VP of Marketing, Evelyn Maki, and Director of Corporate Communications, Meg Roman, led June’s Professional Development Series on change management. Taking attendees through the acquisition of Joy Global by Komatsu in 2016, Evelyn and Meg led an interactive presentation that challenged guests to think how they would respond to such big news in such a short amount of time.

Attendees worked through some of the exact situations Evelyn and Meg found themselves in during the acquisition in small groups, allowing them to react naturally and put into practice the four best practices from the presentation:

1. Manage yourself. 2. Nail the key messages. 3. Give your leaders confidence. 4. Have a mass engagement strategy.

Community Involvement: Thank you Heather Pechacek for decorating the official “Chest of Drawers” that will be used to collect bra donations for Free the Girls. The TEMPO Milwaukee office is now a permanent drop-off location, and we’ll also collect donations at all EWL events moving forward. Your donations help survivors of sex trafficking in El Salvador, Mozambique and Uganda.

Programming – Shout out to Fran Sutter and Ann Woelfel for moderating the August 7 Program Meeting manel, and doing an amazing job! We’d also like to recognize Fran Sutter for coordinating the use of GMR Marketing’s space to host the program.

13 Committee Member Spotlight

Sponsorships – The Sponsorships Committee is making a huge impact! To-date they’ve helped shepherd more that $15,000 in financial support to sponsor various Emerging Women Leaders initiatives. If you’d like to learn how your company can support EWL, contact committee co-chairs Nicole Gulatz and Regina Levchets.

Two examples: Capri Senior Communities is the 2018-19 EWL Community Involvement Sponsor, thanks to an ask made by EWLer Britt Blackwelder.

“I have to say I was nervous asking my CEO for a sponsorship commitment. Not because I didn’t think he would say yes, but because I was going to ask for a lot of money and Britt Blackwelder I don’t have a lot of experience doing it. I had been wanting to, but Nicole Gulatz’s gentle ‘nudge’ via email was the last bit of encouragement I needed to make it happen. I gathered all my materials, collected my thoughts, and caught him in a great mood. I told him why I was there: I wanted to ask him to sponsor EWL, an organization that has done so much for me (and in turn, the company), and also the community that Capri is an integral part of. I told him how EWL supports and encourages women at all levels of their career, just like Capri, and how a commitment showed that Capri is committed to advancing women leaders. I asked for $3000 and he was happy to do it. I know not every request ends in a ‘yes’ but I couldn’t believe I had done it. I called Nicole right away and she was so excited for me. Of course, she told me that if he said yes that easily, he probably would have given more! :) I’m thankful to Nicole, the sponsorships committee, and all the EWL women who constantly encourage me to do things outside of my comfort zone, and Capri (Jim Tarantino in particular) is so happy to be a sponsor of this amazing organization and all the great work we do.”

Facilitated by Kirstin Stahl, Wells Fargo Asset Management is supporting three separate initiatives in 2018-19 – Community Involvement, Socials, and the Professional Development Workshop.

“During my first year of EWL, I was regularly providing updates to my manager on how I was getting involved, consistently shared feedback from events I attended and regularly Kirstin Stahl let her know how much I valued and appreciated the opportunity to be a part of EWL. During that year’s budget planning season, I asked for a small amount to be dedicated as a sponsorship to EWL which was approved. During my second year of EWL, I continued to share all the great things our group was doing, how we were growing, what great people I was meeting and how it has contributed to my career and personal development. During next year’s budget season, I was able to increase the amount of sponsorship which was really exciting! Wells Fargo Asset Management supports team member career development and giving back to the community so the EWL story was easy to tell!”
