Definition Thyroid hormones Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland Triiodothyronine (T3) differs from tetraiodothyronine (T4 ) in fails to produce sufficient thyroid hormone to maintain the that it has three iodine atoms instead of four. T 3 is derived from many metabolic activities in the body. Hypothyroidism can be T4 through de-iodination outside the thyroid gland. T3 is less primary, secondary or tertiary. Primary hypothyroidism is due to bound to protein than T4 and as a result is about four times more disease within the thyroid gland itself whereas secondary and biologically active. The role of thyroid hormones in the body is as follows: Anatomy and physiology review • Regulation of basal metabolic rate The thyroid gland, an endocrine gland, is a small butterfly-shaped • Regulation of oxygen usage gland located inferior to the larynx or voice box. The thyroid gland weighs • Increased use of glucose and fatty acids for ATP production approximately 30 grams or 1 oz. Legumes and the ‘f’ factor!

By Carla Evans

Whether or not you are vegetarian, legumes provide an excellent How to increase digestibility and reduce the ‘f’ factor: source of protein and can be used as an alternative to meat. They Many people know about soaking legumes, but most people do also contain high levels of fibre, vitamins and minerals and they not know about semi-germination. Semi-germination is simply help to stabilise blood sugar levels. letting the soaked legumes stand until the shoot just about comes through. This deactivates the naturally occurring enzyme inhibitors. The downsides? The main issues people report with legumes They are there for good reason – to stop the seed sprouting until are the ‘f’ factor (yes, flatulence) and preparation time of dried conditions are optimal. legumes. However, enzyme inhibitors also inhibit our digestive enzymes. A third issue that is in hot debate with nutritional nerds at the Semi-germination also reduces the oligosaccharide content of moment is whether legumes are a complete protein and how to legumes by approximately 50%. Oligosaccharides are a type of measure and compare proteins for their amino acid content. sugar naturally present in the legume but difficult to digest and are the main contributor to flatulence after eating legumes. The “O” in I can help you with the first issue, and I can kind of help you with FODMAPS stands for oligosaccharides. the second one – see the cheat’s tip on the last page. I will try and explain the third issue! Are legumes a complete protein? If you just want the “how to” of legumes – go straight to page 9 for There is a lot of conflicting information about this and more a handout you can photocopy and give to clients. If you would like research is currently being done. What we know so far: more of the “why” read on! 1. Legumes do contain all of the essential amino acids. What are legumes? 2. However, many legumes are low in methionine. This is why Legumes are a flowering plant and the edible legumes we you might hear them being called an incomplete protein. commonly refer to include chickpeas, other peas, beans and lentils. Peanuts are also a legume as well as licorice! Soybeans are the only legume widely considered a complete protein. How to make legumes more nutritious: 3. The traditional way of ensuring a legume-based meal Legumes contain phytic acid in the outer coating. 10 In Touch Autumn 2018 The Power of Emotional Health Are you unconsciously causing your own pain? by Anna Heiskari

All pain is real, and pain is exactly as you perceive it to be. Within the ‘heart’ of the limbic system lies the hypothalamus containing the nuclei involved in perceiving pleasure, fear and rage, not to forget the nuclei involved in biological rhythms and sex drive. The hypothalamus acts through the ANS pathways to initiate most physical expressions of emotions. For example–an angry person’s heart pounds and their blood pressure rises. The hypothalamus is nothing short of awesome but also vitally important to overall body homeostasis. Wikimedia So where are we going with this? Well! As Kinesiologists, we witness firsthand how working with emotions helps influence and restore health and balance. 12 In Touch Autumn 2018 My Other Life

By Emily Freer

Most of you know me as Emily, the voice at the end of your phone calls or emails to the AKA office. Connecting with AKA members has by far been the most enjoyable part of my job! The first time I heard about the AKA was from my own family kinesiologist, the amazing AKA practitioner member Janine Michael. I gained a huge amount of support and practical skills from Janine about how to manage my own stress levels as a single parent and also support for my son who had been diagnosed as being on the autistic spectrum. At the time I was a remedial massage therapist and I was seeking a part time steady income. Janine mentioned the AKA was looking for an office assistant and, eight years later, here I am on the verge of embarking on yet another adventure!

We are both excited to be able to share the passion and devotion we have for the basic human right to eat simple, natural whole foods. It is amazing how difficult this act has become in a world full of advertising and influence; to create simple good eating habits has become an act that requires conscious creation. We plan on supporting people on this journey by making it delicious!! One of my favourite pasta recipes is from the blog dollyandoatmeal. com by Lindsay S. Love. It also appears in her book, Chickpea

Australian Kinesiology Association Inc 21 AKA Website Redesign Survey Nov-Dec 2017

By Robyn Kirk A big thank you to everyone who completed the AKA Website Redesign survey at the end of 2017. We learned a lot about what you like with the current AKA website and a whole lot more about what could be improved for our new website. A total of 31 people completed the survey, ranging from occasional users of the site (23% used the site only 1-5 times in the last 12 months), through to 16% who used it >50 times over that period. When we asked what people used the site for (top 5 reasons) of a total 134 responses, 18 responses related to membership activities (Join, Renew, Pay Fees), 17 to courses (including workshops) and CPE points, 13 to checking or managing their practitioner listing, 16 to finding a practitioner and referring them, 10 to conferences and ‘other events’. There were also a number of responses relating to finding general information, keeping current and News/In Touch.

Other feedback was that it generally took longer to find information • better search, particularly for practitioners on the site than expected (55% a little more time; 19% a lot more time) and the current site was not particularly visually appealing. • more research and case studies • easier access to forms We also received some great suggestions of how the site could be improved, both from the perspective of the publicly facing pages • better search engine optimisation and the member pages. • more modern look with pictures current and relevant to kinesiology These included: We are using this feedback to make a plan for the new website and • Keep the pages current with news and articles expect to be contacting prospective website builders in the next month. • mobile friendly For a full copy of the survey, please feel free to email me at • better navigation [email protected]
