Brown, a retired clinical psychologist, started beekeeping nearly two decades ago, but she says she still considers herself a student of a craft that is ever-changing as bees face new ecological and human-causedB threats. “I knew that I needed another mission,” Brown said. “I needed another way to do good in the world and I decided to learn about beekeeping. “I had no clue what I was getting into. I still think I am a novice and I have been learning all this time. Beekeeping is very demanding.” On her 40-acre organic farm prop- erty, Brown has a colony of eight beehives after having as many as 23 hives at the apiary’s largest. The Lego video game series is financially successful outselling traditionally produced licensed video games. The Lego series also receives critical acclaim from both gaming magazine reviews and user reviews. By conducting both an industrial and audience address study, this project displays how texts that begin as promotional products for Hollywood movies and a toy line can grow into their own franchise of releases that stills bolster the original work.

    The Ambiguous Captain Jack Sparrow: Destabilizing Gender, Politics and Religion in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean Dr. Jennifer E. Porter (Memorial University) [email protected] ABSTRACT: Scholars have argued that Disney films reflect a nostalgia for a white, colonial, male-oriented Christian past and an uncritical acceptance of overtly consumerist culture. This article examines these academic criticisms of Disney through the lens of Disney’s film trilogy Pirates of the Caribbean. The paper argues that Disney’s Pirates films destabilize traditional models of gender, politics and religion through the figure of Captain Jack Sparrow. Exploring Jack as a Trickster figure highlights dichotomies such as good and evil, life and death, male and female, human and divine, democracy and imperialism, and points to a broader trend within these Disney films to problematize accepted categories. As a result, the article suggests that Disney’s ideological “message” is much more nuanced in these films than academic critics give Disney credit for. [1] Pirates of the Caribbean debuted as a “dark ride” at Disneyland in 1967; modeled on imagineer Marc Davis’ sketches, it was the last ride to be conceived and built while Walt Disney himself was alive, and opened to the public three months after his death.i The ride consists of a series of vignettes, showing audio-animatronic pirates, both living and dead, indulging in various piratical pursuits.     THE MYSTERIOUS LARA CROFT: Digibimbo vs. Digiheroine 1 Rachelle Fernandez February 12th, 2001 STS145: Case History Prospectus Every once in a while, a game comes along whose influence extends beyond the gaming world and into contemporary society. One interesting and hotly debated aspect of this is the role certain video games play in gender politics. Consider the following. Scene One. A helicopter, its propellers whipping the air, zooms into the scene and drops down an agile figure onto the ground. It’s a woman, dressed in hiking shorts with pistols holstered to both thighs. The woman has landed in a dark cave and, after a cautious look around, begins to explore it, sometimes walking cautiously, other times running ahead, leaping boulders. She comes across a flare lying mysteriously on the wet cavern floor. With a happy sigh, she picks the item up. Suddenly the woman hears low grumble behind her and somersaults backwards to face an angry tiger. She whips out two automatic pistols and blasts the tiger to its death, her face contorted in a snarl. Scene Two. An exotic dancer is performing in a strip club. The camera zooms away from her to reveal an empty audience. The slogan “Where The Boys Are” is flashed across the screen while a crowd of lusty men rapidly exit the strip club in pursuit of the same woman we just saw exploring eerie caverns. 2 This “woman” isn’t even really a woman at all. She’s Lara Croft, the star in the hit video game series Tomb Raider. Lara Croft is something of a cultural icon.
