Woodward, The Wall Street Journal, 14 juin 2013 Tom Wood : à l’affut du paysage Après 30 ans passés à documenter l’Angleterre urbaine de Liverpool et du Merseyside, le maitre de la photographie d’outre-Manche se tourne vers le temps suspendu des paysages du Pays de Galles, où il vit désormais. La galerie Sit Down présente jusqu’au 20 décembre 2015 quelques images de sa série “Cynefin“ : “ce lieu familier“. Comme le battement d’un œil, Tom Wood ne s’arrête jamais de photographier. Lorsque, entre deux grappes d’images qu’il saisit sans en avoir l’air – le bras en l’air, l’œil vérifiant rapidement l’écran – vous surprenez son regard, il bredouille quelques mots et vous fixe en souriant. Comme si ce sourire énigmatique, mi-poli mi- espiègle, était la meilleure réponse à la question “pourquoi photographier ?“ Se fondre dans son environnement pour mieux le capter. Le principe est celui de la street photography. Aller chercher, si possible tout près, à ordonner dans le cadre ce que le hasard vous met sous le nez. Chez Tom Wood, à la différence d’autres, l’approche ne s’embarrasse pas d’économie de déclenchement : la bonne image surgit du multiple. Pas seulement pour pallier les aléas mais aussi pour s’oublier soi-même : “La seule manière de prendre de bonnes photos, dit-il, c’est de perdre conscience de ce que l’on fait, de s’oublier“ Cette soif d’images, New Brighton et le Merseyside (Liverpool) s’en souviennent tant, à partir de 1978, Tom Wood en a arpenté les rues, épuisé les lignes de bus ou fermé les pubs les samedi soirs, en quête de la moindre étrangeté. En noir et blanc, mais aussi en couleur dont il s’avère très tôt, comme Martin Paar, l’un des plus fervents convertis. Il amasse de cette observation assidue un impressionnant corpus de scènes de genres du monde contemporain, de natures mortes ou de personnages isolés dans leur intimité sur fond de jungle urbaine de l’Angleterre thatchérienne, puis fin de siècle. Il gagne un surnom, forgé auprès des gosses de la rue : “Photieman“. Le type à l’appareil. En déménageant en 2003 dans le verdoyant Pays de Galles, il voulait changer d’air, fuir l’âpreté de la ville et se poser la “question du paysage“. Dans cette région isolée, située à une heure de route de Liverpool, faute de permis de conduire, c’est à pied, à vélo ou grâce aux rares bus qu’il part chaque jour explorer la campagne, posant son trépied parmi les événements de la vie agricole, les bâtiments à l’oubli, les paysages nus. Il livre de ce pays un portrait noueux où, en dehors de rares groupes de touristes croisés au détour d’un panorama, les hommes ont presque disparu ; où les bêtes s’épanouissent dans le bocage. Le photographe semble à l’aise, comme l’indique le titre qu’il choisit pour cette série : “Cynefin“, une expression galloise qui renvoie à la familiarité que l’on éprouve face à un endroit, l’évidence de se retrouver en territoire ami. Cet environnement suscite un formalisme inédit, obtenu à l’aide d’un vieil appareil panoramique argentique “Noblex“ qu’il utilisait jusqu’alors occasionnellement. Le paysage se tord, s’étire. Les arbres majestueux y déploient leurs branches interminables sous lesquelles, comme des vestiges archéologiques, dorment des engins agricoles, les intérieurs des fermes semblent de guingois. Seuls les moutons paraissent indifférents. Parfois, sous l’effet de quelque illusion d’optique offerte par le paysage, l’espace semble se resserrer à la manière d’un objectif “fisheye“. L’œil du photographe. Comme pour rappeler que quelque soit l’environnement où ils évoluent, Tom Wood et sa curiosité restent à l’affut. The exhibitions open to the public on the 7th of July. Tom Wood’s photographs of Cammell Laird Shipyard in Birkenhead taken between 1993 and 1996 were originally commissioned by the Documentary Photography Archive (DPA) to capture a definitive phase in the social and political history of the region. This is only the second time that these photographs of the Laird ’s Shipyard have been shown as a body of work. The exhibition also includes Wood and Quayle’s research and presentation of archive material related to the history of the shipyard, drawn from the Williamson’s own collection and that at Wirral Archives. Wood was commissioned by the DPA to photograph the working lives of the men who built the ships and the shipyard prior to its closure after 170 years in Birkenhead.

I mentioned the details of his book in our first Contemporary Group online newsletter which was launched in June. The E-News is a way of informing you of things which may not find their way into the Contemporary Journal, either through lack of space or because the timing is wrong. It will also be possible to promote members exhibitions, gallery exhibitions, books of interest or Regional events. Please let me know if you have anything of interest that you would like others to know about, or if you have any suggestions which may improve it. It will be sent out mid-way between the Journals and the next one should appear during the second week in September. There are proposals for a Yorkshire/North-East Group; there was considerable interest shown for this at the Contemporary Group meeting in April in Bradford. This presentation – although predicated on – does not focus solely on Wood’s our collaboration but what this opened for student collaboration as well as with other individuals and organisations. In 2007 we invited Tom to give a talk on his work for BA Photography students at the University of Chester. This led to a relationship, which has continued with Wood’s long term contribution as a visiting member of staff. Around 2012 Wood invited me to work towards the publication of The DPA Work.

  • Introduction
    Introduction Martin Parr is a chronicler of our age. In the face of the constantly growing flood of images released by the media, his photographs offer us the opportunity to see the world from his unique perspective. At first glance, his photographs seem exaggerated or even grotesque. The motifs he chooses are strange, the colours are garish and the perspectives are unusual. Parr's term for the overwhelming power of published images is "propaganda". He counters this propaganda with his own chosen weapons: criticism, seduction and humour. As a result, his photographs are original and entertaining, accessible and understandable. But at the same time they show us in a penetrating way that we live, how we present ourselves to others, and what we value. Leisure, consumption and communication are the concepts that this British photographer has been researching for several decades now on his worldwide travels. In the process, he examines national characteristics and international phenomena to find out how valid they are as symbols that will help future generations to understand our cultural peculiarities. Parr enables us to see things that have seemed familiar to us in a completely new way. In this way he creates his own image of society, which allows us to combine an analysis of the visible signs of globalisation with unusual visual experiences. In his photos, Parr juxtaposes specific images with universal ones without resolving the contradictions. Individual characteristics are accepted and eccentricities are treasured. The themes Parr selects and his inimitable treatment of them set him apart as a photographer whose work involves the creation of extensive series.

Red Head diagonale, 1984 Analog dark room type print, size 55 x 65 cm, 2019 ©Tom WOOD courtesy galerie Sit Down After the great success of the exhibition Mothers, Daughters, Sisters this summer at the Rencontres d'Arles and the publication of the eponymous book by Les éditions Textuel, it’s now with Family Likeness, that Tom Wood’s work is honoured in this new exhibition at Sit Down gallery. To the triangle of mothers, daughters, sisters is added that of father, son and in particular brothers. Some vernacular photos of the filial relation belonging to the personal collection of Tom Wood punctuate the hanging. From the early seventies to the present day, Tom Wood has been photographing untiringly generations of Liverpool’s citizens in the street, the bus, at work and at play. Known as the “Photie Man“ by Liverpudlians, Tom Wood transcends photographic practice, wishing to know and to connect with people; there emerges a true complicity with the photographer, a clear connection in their confident looks oriented toward the camera lens. The philosopher Wittgenstein spoke of the understanding which consists of 'seeing connections'. "Just as we see a face differently when you look at it, first as an expression of happiness then as an expression of pride". He once admonished a friend, "you don't take enough notice of peoples faces... it is a fault you ought to correct"! A real tribute to women, men, families and to human nature, Tom Wood demonstrates again and again, a truly human look on the human.

    PRESS RELEASE TOM WOOD THE BUS PROJECT, 1979 - 1996 September 9 - November 4, 2000 Opening: Saturday, September 9, 6-9pm Thomas Erben is very pleased to open his 2000/1 season with TOM WOOD’s The Bus Project. This body of work, built up during Wood’s near 20 year odyssey photographing from local buses in Liverpool, was praised by Lee Friedlander:”...as good a set of pictures that one sees every five or ten years, if you’re lucky.” Born in 1951, Wood together with Paul Graham and Martin Parr represent the first generation of British fine art color photography. Their work informed and influenced what has become The New Wave of Photography in Britain of the past 10 years (Richard Billingham, Paul Seawright, Hannah Starkey, Wolfgang Tillmans ...). Although Wood has been exclusively photographing in Liverpool, his primary interest is not documentary. Trained as a painter at the conceptually oriented Leicester Polytechnic from 1973-76, his first exploration of lens based media was through extensive viewing of experimental films. Photography entered his practice through the collecting of postcards, which he would purchase in bulk from thrift stores and then examine and organize in albums. Wood takes his photographs in an open manner, effacing himself “blank canvas” style, shooting quickly yet precisely, to admit chance into both content and form. From thousands of images, and in a shift of interests, a second process of discovery consists of choosing and editing, determining which of the pictures fits his criteria for an image that, as he says: ‘works’. The bus photographs are extraordinary on various levels.
