Wasim Muklashy R O C K E R S Available on Blu-ray March 10, 2009 Through MVD Visual WATCH TRAILER BELOW MVD Visual and Blue Sun Film Company are pleased to announce the home viewing release of the ROCKERS for worldwide distribution on Blu-ray. Theatrically released in June of 1980, this classic reggae film has been transferred to HD from original 35mm negative and lovingly cleaned & restored. “Reggae’s raw, righteous cinematic masterpiece… this beautiful edition does a crucial film necessary justice.” - Peter Relic, ROLLING STONE “Rockers is a Jamaican movie with the sparkle of The Harder They Come…in many respects the better of the two…funny 1 of 2 1/21/2009 3:12 PM Kotori Magazine - ICONIC 1980 REGGAE FILM "ROCKERS" TRANS... http://kotorimagazine.com/todays-news-and-hoots/221.html off-beat players and a sinuous Reggae score.” - Janet Maslin , NEW YORK TIMES "... one of the most enjoyable musical movies of all time, with a point to make and the sound to drive it home..." - Jo-Ann Greene, GOLDMINE "... ranks alongside The Harder They Come as the greatest film of reggae's golden age..." - Nigel Williamson, UNCUT "Arguably the greatest reggae movie ever made, better and much more varied than its well-known predecessor The Harder They Come." - Tyson Schuetze, RELIX "... radiates energy, but what really makes it great are the performances..." - Tom Bryant, MOJO ROCKERS is a Reggae triumph. By all critical standards ROCKERS is one of the greatest Reggae films ever. Starring Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace and Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall , it’s a Robin Hood style story of oppressed Jamaican musicians getting even with the "mafia types" in the business. But it’s the all-star musical performances, appearances, and soundtrack that sets ROCKERS apart, featuring acting roles and music by Burning Spear, Bunny Wailer, Third World, Peter Tosh, Jacob Miller, Gregory Isaacs, Kiddus I, Junior Murvin, Inner Circle, the Heptones, & Abyssinians . When you read inside, you'll see why. May their days overflow with blessings. This will be the first issue available only online. But for those that want hard copies, contact Parchment Printers: £1 a copy! We've done well to have issued fourteen in hard copy, when you think that Fire! • Sly & Robbie – Primary Wave Music
SLY & ROBBIE facebook.com/slyandrobbieofficial Imageyoutube.com/channel/UC81I2_8IDUqgCfvizIVLsUA not found or type unknown en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sly_and_Robbie open.spotify.com/artist/6jJG408jz8VayohX86nuTt Sly Dunbar (Lowell Charles Dunbar, 10 May 1952, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies; drums) and Robbie Shakespeare (b. 27 September 1953, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies; bass) have probably played on more reggae records than the rest of Jamaica’s many session musicians put together. The pair began working together as a team in 1975 and they quickly became Jamaica’s leading, and most distinctive, rhythm section. They have played on numerous releases, including recordings by U- Roy, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Culture and Black Uhuru, while Dunbar also made several solo albums, all of which featured Shakespeare. They have constantly sought to push back the boundaries surrounding the music with their consistently inventive work. Dunbar, nicknamed ‘Sly’ in honour of his fondness for Sly And The Family Stone, was an established figure in Skin Flesh And Bones when he met Shakespeare. Dunbar drummed his first session for Lee Perry as one of the Upsetters; the resulting ‘Night Doctor’ was a big hit both in Jamaica and the UK. He next moved to Skin Flesh And Bones, whose variations on the reggae-meets-disco/soul sound brought them a great deal of session work and a residency at Kingston’s Tit For Tat club. Sly was still searching for more, however, and he moved on to another session group in the mid-70s, the Revolutionaries. This move changed the course of reggae music through the group’s work at Joseph ‘Joe Joe’ Hookim’s Channel One Studio and their pioneering rockers sound.

  • The Clash and Mass Media Messages from the Only Band That Matters
THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.

  • Versions, Dubs and Riddims: Dub and the Transient Dynamics of Jamaican Music
Versions, Dubs and Riddims: Dub and the Transient Dynamics of Jamaican Music Feature Article Thomas Vendryes Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (France) Abstract Dub emerged in Jamaica in the early 1970s, and, for a decade, it became a prolific and intensely innovative dimension of Jamaican popular music. Yet, during the mid- 1980s, while dub flourished at the international level, influencing popular music in general, the genre of dub declined in popularity in Jamaica. How could this musical innovation, so evidently associated with Jamaica, expand and develop internationally while at the same time decline in Jamaica itself? In this paper, I explore the modalities and evolution of Jamaican music production and consumption. Through a description of the Jamaican music industry context, with reference to individual artists’ paths and a summary of Jamaican dub production, I show that even as the Jamaican music milieu was highly favorable to the emergence of dub, dub proliferated as a genre only by developing ties to a diaspora of international audiences and practitioners. Keywords: production studies, Jamaican popular music, history of dub, audio-engineer, riddim, performance mixing Thomas Vendryes is Associate Professor at the Department of Social Sciences of the École Normale Supérieure de Cachan and researcher at the Centre d’Économie de la Sorbonne (France). KIDDUS I „TOPSY TURVY WORLD“ Release Date 15/02/12 The world’s legendary reggae musicians of the 70s on one album Kiddus I in 1978 became a legend. In the most famous cult movie of reggae Rockers (Universal Pictures), he played a key scene when he voiced the title Graduation In Zion at Jack Ruby' s recording studio with Earl "Chinna" Smith, Robbie Shakespeare and Wire Lindo in front of the cameras. Kiddus I was always surrounded with all the legends of reggae as he was a visionary and many greats including some that are no longer with us like Bob Marley, Jacob Miller and Peter Tosh to name a few spend much time reasoning with Kiddus i as he has been called The Sheppard and Doctor Feel Good. All his Legendary Friends were always Happy to sit in and play on anything Kiddus I was doing, as he has always been Progressive. For that reason Kiddus I depth in recording is very special as he brings the brotherhood to the Music. While artists such as Burning Spear, Inner Circle or Gregory Isaacs could use the film as a springboard for an international career, you should not hear any Kiddus I longplayer for long time. The reasons are tragic and funny at the same time: the master tapes of his recordings from 1978 got lost as he calls himself today with a charming self-deprecation "The Most Recorded But Never Released Artist". Rubin Rockers Pone +49 2238 462042 www.rubin-rockers.com Topsy Turvy World was recorded by some of the world’s legendary reggae musicians of the 70s.

Day by day artists meet in Earl „Chinna“ Smith’s yard to create music surrounded by nature and confraternity – the way it has always been in Jamaican Reggae and Ska. Involving musicians, singers, producers, sound engineers and artists from numerous countries, genres and cultures, this film project reflects the last 40 years of Jamaican music history. Europe Tour The musicians and main characters involved in this documentary are going to accompany their film, providing an unique experience of motion picture and live music. First-hand insight into the genesis of Reggae through meeting its protagonists. Those very artists, who have always been faithful to their roots of the 60s and 70s and who, whilst becoming legends in their own time, are still inspiriting the stages with their enthusiasm and love to Reggae culture – thus passing it on to the next generation.
