The pair began working together as a team in 1975 and they quickly became Jamaica’s leading, and most distinctive, rhythm section. They have played on numerous releases, including recordings by U- Roy, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Culture and Black Uhuru, while Dunbar also made several solo albums, all of which featured Shakespeare. They have constantly sought to push back the boundaries surrounding the music with their consistently inventive work. Dunbar, nicknamed ‘Sly’ in honour of his fondness for Sly And The Family Stone, was an established figure in Skin Flesh And Bones when he met Shakespeare. Dunbar drummed his first session for Lee Perry as one of the Upsetters; the resulting ‘Night Doctor’ was a big hit both in Jamaica and the UK. He next moved to Skin Flesh And Bones, whose variations on the reggae-meets-disco/soul sound brought them a great deal of session work and a residency at Kingston’s Tit For Tat club. Sly was still searching for more, however, and he moved on to another session group in the mid-70s, the Revolutionaries. This move changed the course of reggae music through the group’s work at Joseph ‘Joe Joe’ Hookim’s Channel One Studio and their pioneering rockers sound.

I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Versions, Dubs and Riddims: Dub and the Transient Dynamics of Jamaican Music Feature Article Thomas Vendryes Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (France) Abstract Dub emerged in Jamaica in the early 1970s, and, for a decade, it became a prolific and intensely innovative dimension of Jamaican popular music. Yet, during the mid- 1980s, while dub flourished at the international level, influencing popular music in general, the genre of dub declined in popularity in Jamaica. How could this musical innovation, so evidently associated with Jamaica, expand and develop internationally while at the same time decline in Jamaica itself? In this paper, I explore the modalities and evolution of Jamaican music production and consumption. Through a description of the Jamaican music industry context, with reference to individual artists’ paths and a summary of Jamaican dub production, I show that even as the Jamaican music milieu was highly favorable to the emergence of dub, dub proliferated as a genre only by developing ties to a diaspora of international audiences and practitioners. KIDDUS I „TOPSY TURVY WORLD“ Release Date 15/02/12 The world’s legendary reggae musicians of the 70s on one album Kiddus I in 1978 became a legend. In the most famous cult movie of reggae Rockers (Universal Pictures), he played a key scene when he voiced the title Graduation In Zion at Jack Ruby' s recording studio with Earl "Chinna" Smith, Robbie Shakespeare and Wire Lindo in front of the cameras. Kiddus I was always surrounded with all the legends of reggae as he was a visionary and many greats including some that are no longer with us like Bob Marley, Jacob Miller and Peter Tosh to name a few spend much time reasoning with Kiddus i as he has been called The Sheppard and Doctor Feel Good. All his Legendary Friends were always Happy to sit in and play on anything Kiddus I was doing, as he has always been Progressive. For that reason Kiddus I depth in recording is very special as he brings the brotherhood to the Music. While artists such as Burning Spear, Inner Circle or Gregory Isaacs could use the film as a springboard for an international career, you should not hear any Kiddus I longplayer for long time. The reasons are tragic and funny at the same time: the master tapes of his recordings from 1978 got lost as he calls himself today with a charming self-deprecation "The Most Recorded But Never Released Artist". Involving musicians, singers, producers, sound engineers and artists from numerous countries, genres and cultures, this film project reflects the last 40 years of Jamaican music history. Europe Tour The musicians and main characters involved in this documentary are going to accompany their film, providing an unique experience of motion picture and live music. First-hand insight into the genesis of Reggae through meeting its protagonists. Those very artists, who have always been faithful to their roots of the 60s and 70s and who, whilst becoming legends in their own time, are still inspiriting the stages with their enthusiasm and love to Reggae culture – thus passing it on to the next generation.
