To ensure wheelings in the field are kept as narrow as possible, the width between the inside edges of tyres or tracks for all PX Farms’ machines is set at 1.8m. This was the spacing that all the machines on the farm could run at without special modifications, apart from a John Deere 7530, which had to have spacers fitted. The 1.8m width also ensures machines with wide tyres will fit within the 3m limit for road travel - above this the police have to be noti- fied.

After some experimentation James Peck has set his CTF system to run on a tramline spacing of 11.9m rather then the full 12m. This is because the com- bine headers have a cutting width slightly less than 12m and a 4cm safety margin needs to be left at each side of HORSCH Sprinter 12 SW - a real farmer’s drill the header when operating to allow for

Because of erosion protection culti- vation in some cases only starts at the 15th of February. This is too late to achieve a good frost mellowness. The result is a very cloddy soil. How do you assess this decision today and would you take it again? Horst Keller: The answer is a definite YES!! One year ago we were absolutely sure that it will be a perfect alliance for both of us. We were also well aware of the fact that a merger would entail enormous efforts on both sides. But no matter how big those efforts would be, we never had any doubt that it would be the right step to take. And today this conviction has not changed. The demand for the products and also the confirmation from our customers is that the innovation of the products is exact- ly what they are looking for have only confirmed our decision. The process of both companies growing together involved considerable changes in vari- ous procedures and structures of the organisation and, thus, it was a very demanding year for our staff. It was not easy, but necessary to be able to grow together into one company. We are still in the middle of this process, but we have already overcome the largest obstacles. We had expected that the demand for LEEB products would increase due to the merger as HORSCH has an excellent and professional dealer network; but the extent nevertheless took us by surprise. variety Dimension. The main reason for choosing this lodging-resistant and healthy variety was its rapid early growth and the fact that it is very suit- able for mulch seeding.

The seeding and fertilising variants were laid out according to the test plan. The loosening depth of the HORSCH Fo- cus 3 TD was set to 22 centimetre. Be- cause of the prevailing soil conditions deeper cultivation does not make any sense as otherwise subsoil is taken to the surface. The rape seed is placed at a depth of 1.5 centimetre to achieve a quick emergence under the sufficiently wet conditions.

Herbicides are applied immediately after sowing. We used: 150 g/ha Echelon Rape population on 11th of October 2012

In the test we tried different fertiliser combinations. To decide upon which fertiliser to use we took into account the suitability of the fertiliser for the placement of a fertiliser depot as well as the attracting effect of the nutrients on the plant root.
