MAY 2016 THE CLASSROOM IS ALL AROUND US From Paramus to the Pinelands and Asbury Park to Fairfield, the Emmy Award-winning program Classroom Close-up, NJ is devoted to spotlighting important initiatives, learning techniques and collaborations that public school systems and teachers across the state are implementing in their classrooms and communities.

May 1: Pinelands — Paramus — Cumberland County — Montclair Pinelands Regional High School’s “Senior Take-Over the School Day” gives students the opportunity to walk in their teachers’ shoes by preparing and teaching actual classroom lessons, discovering the challenging yet vital the role of educators. Cumberland County’s student-run “Give Kids a Smile Day” allows high school students to partner with professional volunteers in scheduling, fundraising, and assisting in free dental work to underprivileged children. The episode also focuses on team building at Paramus’ Stone Lane Elementary School and an incorporation of arts and academics at Montclair’s Glenfield Middle School.

May 8: Fairfield — Riverdale — Monmouth County — Buena Regional Green initiatives are central to Fairfield’s Adlai Stevenson School, which not only benefits the Earth, but also transforms Pre-K through third grade students into mini-scientists, studying plant life cycles, ecosystems, and more. Buena Regional Middle School emphasizes reading recognition programs, third-graders from Riverdale explore mini “internships” in the community, and Monmouth County Vocational School and Biotechnology High address the serious issue of suicide, and what can be done to prevent and assist with prevention.
