Anglophiles, Rejoice! 1 (Saturdays at 9:40Pm Premiering April 9) Anglophiles, Rejoice! APRIL 2016 New Seasons of Drama Await Is there a void in your heart that British darling Downton Abbey used to fill? Look no further — WLIW has the cure for all your Anglophile woes. Mysteries, intricate love stories, and drama for days, these programs step up to the plate and deliver suspense and entertainment for the masses. The Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad is back investigating the Metropolitan Police’s cold cases for the final season of New Tricks (Fridays at 10pm beginning April 1). From bodies in the basement to skeletons in the swimming pool, the team must pull together more than ever to uncover the city’s long buried secrets and bring justice to the streets of London. The improbable crime-fighting team of Reverend Sidney Chambers (James Norton) and Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green) continue to bring justice, spiritual nourishment and matchmaking to 1950s England in the second season of Grantchester (Mondays at 10pm beginning April 4). With the backdrop of post-World War II Britain, the duo tackles sexual assault, homicide, a haunted stable and more, including Sidney’s unresolved love life. Vera Death in Paradise Kind-hearted loner Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope continues to deliver answers to the most baffling of cases in the sixth season of Vera (Saturdays at 9:40pm premiering April 9). Academy Award-nominee and BAFTA Award-winner Brenda Blethyn portrays the brilliant murder investigator, who has a tendency to become obsessed with her job, as she deals with intrigue and tragedy throughout Northeast England. Death in Paradise brings warmth and wit to the lineup in a fifth season (Mondays at 8pm premiering April 11). Expat DI Humphrey Goodman is finally making himself at home on the beautiful island of Saint Marie, but while his deductive powers are valuable and unmatched in solving cases, they fall short in the department of romance.     The Nemesis as the Protagonistʼs ‘Shadowʼ Scott Myers Want drama? Ask your Protagonist: What do you fear the most? Then put them in a story where they have to confront that fear: Their Nemesis. A few years ago, I gave a series of presentations at the Austin Film Festival, the London Screenwritersʼ Festival, and the Willamette Writers Conference. One subject I explored at all the events was this: How to write a worthy Nemesis. Itʼs a critical concern because apart from your Protagonist, the Nemesis is often the most important character in your story. Indeed, Hollywood has a special affinity for Nemesis characters. First off, some of the most memorable figures in movie history have been Nemeses: From Darth Vader [Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope] and the Wicked Witch of the West [The Wizard of Oz], to Nurse Ratched [One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest] and Mr. Potter [It’s a Wonderful Life], to the Alien [Alien] and the Shark [Jaws], Nemesis characters cast a long shadow within the stories they inhabit and outside in the imaginations of movie viewers. Second, actors love to play Bad Guys and Gals. Itʼs interesting, even fun to explore the dark side of a characterʼs psyche, allowing the actor to dredge up and use powerful negative energy. When a script pings into a studio exec or producerʼs email inbox that has a well-crafted, multidimensional, and captivating Nemesis, ones such as Gordon Gekko [Wall Street], the Joker [The Dark Knight Rises], and Hans Gruber [Die Hard], that is a plus because Hollywood players know those roles will appeal to name talent.
