  • Managed Intraparty Democracy: Precursory
MANAGED INTRAPARTY DEMOCRACY: PRECURSORY DELEGATION AND PARTY LEADER SELECTION Nicholas Aylott (Södertörn University), presenting author Niklas Bolin (Mid Sweden University) Paper presented at the first PUPOL International Conference, April 7th8th 2016, Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Abstract The question of how party leaders are selected has recently, and belatedly, come under systematic comparative scrutiny. If it is the location of intraparty power that interests us, however, it might be that some of the more observable indicators in such processes, such as the identity of the selectorate, are not actually the most revealing ones. Using a delegation perspective, we thus present a framework for analysing prior steps in leader selection, and relate it to various idealtypical constellations of intraparty power. The framework encompasses, first, what we call precursory delegation, with focus especially on an agent that, formally or informally, manages the selection process before its reaches the selectorate. Second, the framework takes account of the degree to which the process is managed rather than left open to free competition between leader candidates. We illustrate the framework primarily with instances of leader selection in two Swedish parties. Key words: intraparty democracy – leaders – delegation – management – Sweden. This paper is currently under peer review at a journal, so please don't quote without the authors' permission. updated NA 20160324 INTRODUCTION Party politics is about leadership. Yet it is only fairly recently that the selection of leaders by political parties has begun to receive the attention, in the form of systematic comparative study, that it deserves. Scholarly interest has centred on the "selectorate", the organ within a party that, according to its statutes, decides who will be the leader.

MODULE 2 SWEDEN ELECTION 2002 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Swedish data set for CSES module 2 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The election was held on September 15, 2002. Local and regional elections were held at the same time. The Swedish election study is separated into two samples, one pre election sample and one post election sample. The CSES module 2 is included in the post election part of the study. The CSES Module 2 data set include 1 060 respondents. Due to Swedish data laws the respondents in the Swedish election study 2002 were asked if they agreed to that their answers would be a part of international data set accessible on the Internet. Among the respondents there were 6 percent (70 respondents) which disagreed to this. The table below show the proportion of respondents that agreed and did not agreed in different social and political groups. For example the results shows that women, elderly, persons living outside large towns or cities and low educated people were somewhat more negative to that their answers would be accessible on the Internet. agree data on disagree data Internet on Internet sum percent n gender male 95 5 100 574 female 92 8 100 556 age 18-22 97 3 100 238 23-60 94 6 100 660 61-85 90 10 100 232 rural/urban rural area 91 9 100 189 small village 92 8 100 238 suburb to large town or city 93 7 100 235 large town or city 96 4 100 467 education low 89 11 100 205 middle 95 5 100 560 high 97 3 100 358 political interest

  • Promoting the Ecological Swede
Lund University STVK02 HT13 Department of Political Science Tutor: Tobias Nielsen Promoting the Ecological Swede - A Frame Analysis of Swedish Green Party Policy Gino Carciola Abstract Recent developments within the environmental debate have focused on the individual’s role in mitigating environmental degradation this, together with the advancement of feminist thought and globalization, has lead Andrew Dobson to call for a new conception of citizenship an ‘ecological citizenship’. Although being scarce, practical application and empirical testing has affirmed the existence of such a citizen and the unsurprising link with political affiliation. Considering Sweden’s affirmed role as an environmentally friendly nation, how and to what extent has Swedish Green Party policy taken up and adopted ‘ecological citizenship’? Using the method of frame analysis in examining official party policy documents and membership publication articles, this paper found that the Swedish Green Party had taken up and adopted ecological citizenly characteristics. It was also found that the inclusion of the private sphere and policies aimed at individual behavior, mainly taxation, were both significant and indicative for such a conclusion, affirming ‘ecological citizenships’ normative value. Key words: Ecological Citizenship, Swedish Green Party, Frame Analysis, Policy, Environment Words: 5 Table of contents 1 Introduction ............................................................................................................. 1 1.1 Scope .................................................................................................................

  • Political Youth Organisations and Alcohol Policy in Nordic Countries
Political youth organisations and alcohol policy in Nordic countries Project report 2019/2020 Nordic Alcohol and Drug Policy Network www.nordan.org THIS is not a scientific study. It has never aimed to be one. This is advocacy groups attempt to analyse the developments in societies and in a way to predict where are we heading in the next five or ten years. The prediction aspect of this is because we are focusing on young people. And even more, on politically active young people. They are, at least theoretically, the ones making the decisions of tomorrow. Are they the future ministers, prime ministers, party leaders, high officials? Probably, yes. They are going to decide the future of the political parties, and as we are finding out, they give their best to do it already today. Perhaps more than ever, the youth voice is critical in today's policymaking. "Politics is in realignment. And perhaps the most underappreciated change is this: Based on recent research at Tufts University's Tisch College of Civic Life, young voters, ages 18- 29, played a significant role in the 2018 midterms and are poised to shape elections in 2020 and beyond." CNN on January 2, 2020, looking at the US presidential elections. Every Nordic country is discussing or already experimenting with lowering the voting age, thus involving younger people in our democratic processes. That will mean that political parties will listen more and more what young are saying, what they support and are interested in. Youth matter. Today more than ever before. For us, to understand the motives and interests of young people, it will be easier to predict the next steps and the future developments.
