CHARLES NELSON Tippitiwitchet Cottage, Hall Road, Outwell, Wisbech, PE14 8PE, U.K. INTRODUCTION Having been brought up in the lakeland of County Fermanagh, it is hardly surprising that Robert Scott1 (Figure 1) loved outdoors pursuits, fishing for trout, fowling, and geological or botanical rambles looking for minerals, or mosses, lichens and fungi, those inconspicuous but ubiquitous plants that are so often ignored. He was an ‘ingenious, lively man with great merit, and a good botanist’2 and to him Dawson Turner, a Norfolk banker who was also an antiquarian and an eminent botanist, dedicated Muscologiae Hibernicae spicilegium (Figures 2a & b), published privately in Yarmouth in the early Spring 1804. Only the scantiest fragments of information have been published about Scott, who was Professor of Botany in the University of Dublin from late November 1800 until his death in September 1808. Praeger3 recounted his professorship (but gave incorrect dates4) and noted that Scott had discovered intermediate bladderwort, Utricularia intermedia, in Fermanagh5 and the moss Dicranum scottianum in Cavan, that Muscologiae Hibernicae spicilegium was dedicated to him by his ‘chief friend’, Dawson Turner, and that Robert Brown coined Scottia for an Australian genus in the Fabaceae in his memory. Scott received brief mentions in Smith’s English botany,6 Moore’s synopsis of the mosses of Ireland,7 and in the historical preface to Colgan’s Flora of the county Dublin8 where he is credited with adding upright brome, Bromus (= Bromopsis) erectus, to the county’s flora, as well as horned pondweed, Zannichellia palustris, beaked tasselweed, Ruppia maritima, and greater pond-sedge, Carex riparia. -

Ecology of Pyrmont peninsula iii Executive summary City Council’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030’ initiative ‘is a vision for the sustainable development of the City for the next 20 years and beyond’. It has a largely anthropocentric basis, that is ‘viewing and interpreting everything in terms of human experience and values’(Macquarie Dictionary, 2005). The perspective taken here is that Council’s initiative, vital though it is, should be underpinned by an ecocentric ethic to succeed. This latter was defined by Aldo Leopold in 1949, 60 years ago, as ‘a philosophy that recognizes[sic] that the ecosphere, rather than any individual organism[notably humans] is the source and support of all life and as such advises a holistic and eco-centric approach to government, industry, and individual’(http://dictionary.babylon.com). Some relevant considerations are set out in Part 1: General Introduction. In this report, Pyrmont peninsula - that is the communities of Pyrmont and Ultimo – is considered as a microcosm of the City of Sydney, indeed of urban areas globally. An extensive series of early views of the peninsula are presented to help the reader better visualise this place as it was early in European settlement (Part 2: Early views of Pyrmont peninsula). The physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula has been transformed since European settlement, and Part 3: Physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula describes the geology, soils, topography, shoreline and drainage as they would most likely have appeared to the first Europeans to set foot there. -

John Lucey* Kilkenny, Ireland *Corresponding author: John Lucey, email: [email protected] This pdf constitutes the Version of Record published on 13th August 2019 Abstract Most modern authorities have considered Euphorbia hyberna to be native in Britain but with the possibility that it could have been introduced from Ireland. The results from a literature survey, on the historical occurrence of the species, strongly suggest that it was introduced and has become naturalised at a few locations in south-west England. Keywords: status; Cornwall; Devon; Lusitanian; horticulture Introduction The Irish Spurge (Euphorbia hyberna L.) is an extremely rare plant in England with only recent occurrences for west Cornwall, north Devon and south Somerset (Stace, 2010) although now extinct in the last vice-county (Crouch, 2014). The earliest records for the three vice-counties contained in the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI) Database (DDb) are: 1842 v.c.4 Lynton (Ward, N.B. More, W.S.) 1883 vc.1 Portreath (Marquand, E.D.) 1898 v.c.5 Badgworthy Valley (Salmon, C.E.) As the only element of the so-called Lusitanian flora in England, with an extremely restricted distribution pattern in the south-west, the species represents an unresolved biogeographical conundrum: native or naturalised? A review of the historical literature can provide valuable information on a species’ occurrence and thus may help in determining if it may have been introduced to a region. These models are interest- ing composites of painted unbaked clay, wood, metal and dried plant matter. This article outlines the techniques and materials used to clean, stabilise and re-house these model fungi. Remedial treatments were kept to a minimum but aimed to improve stability. They ® include the use of Lascaux for adhesion and consolidation, and the use of Groom/Stick and smoke sponge for dry cleaning. -

SIR JOSEPH BANKS AND THE BOTANY OF CAPTAIN COOK’S THREE VOYAGES OF EXPLORATION by Phyllis I. Edwards Joseph Banks (1743-1820)w hose early youth was spent at Reevesby Ab- bey, near Boston, in Lincolnshire, was a member of a family who, for gen- erations, had been deeply involved in public affairs and concerned with agricultural improvements. Banks’ school days at Harrow and later Eton were undistinguished. From Sir Everard Home (1822) we learn how the young Joseph became suddenly aware of the beauty of a country lane in full flower and of his subsequent determination to learn botany. The wo- men herb gatherers around Harrow gave him his first instruction, receiv- ing sixpence for every piece of information. His mother’s copy of John Gerard’s famous Herbal (1598) with its woodcuts of the plants he was gradually beginning to recognize became his constant joy and companion. Another family friend, Lord Brougham (1845), states that his subsequent school holidays were spent collecting plants, insects, and other zoological specimens, the commencement of what was later to become a famous her- barium and natural history collection. In 1760, Joseph Banks went up to Oxford and it was while there that his father died in September 1761. The inheritance of the family estates would appear to have enabled him to afford the botanical instruction he so desired and which was not being provided by Professor Humphrey Sib- thorp at Oxford. Through Professor John Martyn of Cambridge Univer- sity, Banks obtained the services of Israel Lyons, a young man distin- guished in botany and who according to Nichols (1812) went to Oxford in July of 1764 to deliver a series of lectures which were attended by some sixty students. -

Ekaterina Heath, Sowing the Seeds for Strong Relations: Seeds and Plants as Diplomatic 1 Gift for the Russian Empress Maria Fedorovna EKATERINA HEATH Sowing the Seeds for Strong Relations: Seeds and Plants as Diplomatic Gifts for the Russian Empress Maria Fedorovna ABSTRACT The article examines the role of botany in diplomatic relationships between Britain and Russia around the turn of the nineteenth century by looking at three gifts of exotic seeds and plants sent by different British diplomats and officials to the Russian Empress Maria Fedorovna, wife of Tsar Paul I. Gifts of live plants were a new category of diplomatic presents fuelled by the rapidly growing popularity of botany across Europe. These gifts represented British imperial ambitions and desire to build a self-sufficient economy. They also indicated an element of Britain’s anxiety about its navy’s dependence on Russian natural resources and later on about Russia’s successes in the exploration of the Antarctic regions. Empress Maria Fedorovna displayed these plants in a prominent part of her garden at Pavlovsk, next to the plants from North America that she had procured independently. This was a deliberate strategy that worked to boost her prestige at court by showcasing her international relationships. Sowing the Seeds for Strong Relations – the gift of 1795 The Russian Empress Maria Fedorovna was given Pavlovsk Park as a gift from her mother-in-law Catherine II in 1777.1 From this date she was closely involved in all aspects of the park’s development, from suggesting designs for pavilions to her architects, to informing her gardeners of the best ways of preserving plants in 1 The Estimates of the Account document kept in the Manuscript section of the Pavlovsk palace reads: ‘The village of Pavlovskoye was founded and building works were started on twelfth of December 1777. -

zikawei museum and natural history li-chuan tai Shanghai’s Zikawei Museum (1868–1952): Jesuit Contributions to the Study of Natural History in China ver the last two decades, the role played by museums in the O advancement of knowledge has received increasing recognition and attention from historians of science.1 However, so far only a scant number of studies have paid attention to the importance of museums in the development of science in China. This article focuses on the Zikawei Museum 徐家匯博物院 in Shanghai;2 its aim is to analyze the museum’s contributions to natural history in late-Qing and Republican China, as well as to describe the parties involved in the development of this field.3 Although the museum, founded in 1868, has been overlooked for some decades, its importance was widely acknowledged in the early- I would like to thank Dr. Jen-der Lee for encouraging me to update this article for an Eng- lish-speaking audience.
