This change took place over the course of the eighteenth century, when nature, from being conceived of as a settled state subject to cyclical change, came to be seen as mobile and mutable. The sense of a mobile, mutable nature--the dissertation's central trope--arose from the experience of travel and discovery, which was accompanied from the first by a vigorous process of transplantation. Plants and seeds were carried across oceans, having been dug up on one continent to be replanted often in another. From being static and predictable, plant life therefore became, for scholars and poets alike, dynamic, mutable, and adaptable. I focus on the writings of a small group of men in the Anglo-American world, including John and William Bartram, Peter Collinson, Alexander Garden, John Ellis, and Carl Linnaeus, who were engaged in the work of transporting, planting, writing about, and classifying botanical objects. -

CHARLES NELSON Tippitiwitchet Cottage, Hall Road, Outwell, Wisbech, PE14 8PE, U.K. INTRODUCTION Having been brought up in the lakeland of County Fermanagh, it is hardly surprising that Robert Scott1 (Figure 1) loved outdoors pursuits, fishing for trout, fowling, and geological or botanical rambles looking for minerals, or mosses, lichens and fungi, those inconspicuous but ubiquitous plants that are so often ignored. He was an ‘ingenious, lively man with great merit, and a good botanist’2 and to him Dawson Turner, a Norfolk banker who was also an antiquarian and an eminent botanist, dedicated Muscologiae Hibernicae spicilegium (Figures 2a & b), published privately in Yarmouth in the early Spring 1804. Only the scantiest fragments of information have been published about Scott, who was Professor of Botany in the University of Dublin from late November 1800 until his death in September 1808. Praeger3 recounted his professorship (but gave incorrect dates4) and noted that Scott had discovered intermediate bladderwort, Utricularia intermedia, in Fermanagh5 and the moss Dicranum scottianum in Cavan, that Muscologiae Hibernicae spicilegium was dedicated to him by his ‘chief friend’, Dawson Turner, and that Robert Brown coined Scottia for an Australian genus in the Fabaceae in his memory. Scott received brief mentions in Smith’s English botany,6 Moore’s synopsis of the mosses of Ireland,7 and in the historical preface to Colgan’s Flora of the county Dublin8 where he is credited with adding upright brome, Bromus (= Bromopsis) erectus, to the county’s flora, as well as horned pondweed, Zannichellia palustris, beaked tasselweed, Ruppia maritima, and greater pond-sedge, Carex riparia. -

benjamin Franklin and the Universality of Science ENJAMIN FRANKLIN was a man of the Enlightenment with his feet on the ground and his thoughts focused on the welfare of B mankind. Typical of the eighteenth-century natural philos- ophers, he believed that science transcends politics and that scien- tists are citizens of the world. As "Plenipotentiary from the Congress of the United States to the Court of France" he was concerned im- mediately with the problems of enlisting French aid for the Americans in their revolt against England; yet he was not too busy to recommend the safe passage of Captain James Cook when the famous English ex- plorer was expected to return from his third voyage into the Pacific. At Passy, on March 10, 1779, Franklin addressed a letter "To all Captains and Commanders of armed ships acting by Commission from the Congress of the United States of America, now in war with Great Britain" in which he asked them to respect the nature of Cook's expedition— an Undertaking truly laudable in itself, as the Increase of Geographical Knowledge facilitates the Communication between distant Nations, in the Exchange of useful Products and Manufactures, and the Extension of Arts, whereby the common Enjoyments of human Life are multiply'd and aug- mented, and Science of other kinds increased to the benefit of Mankind in general.1 Nine days later, M. Sartine, secretary of the Marine Department at Paris, issued a similar letter: ... it is the King's pleasure, that Capt. Ecology of Pyrmont peninsula iii Executive summary City Council’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030’ initiative ‘is a vision for the sustainable development of the City for the next 20 years and beyond’. It has a largely anthropocentric basis, that is ‘viewing and interpreting everything in terms of human experience and values’(Macquarie Dictionary, 2005). The perspective taken here is that Council’s initiative, vital though it is, should be underpinned by an ecocentric ethic to succeed. This latter was defined by Aldo Leopold in 1949, 60 years ago, as ‘a philosophy that recognizes[sic] that the ecosphere, rather than any individual organism[notably humans] is the source and support of all life and as such advises a holistic and eco-centric approach to government, industry, and individual’(http://dictionary.babylon.com). Some relevant considerations are set out in Part 1: General Introduction. In this report, Pyrmont peninsula - that is the communities of Pyrmont and Ultimo – is considered as a microcosm of the City of Sydney, indeed of urban areas globally. An extensive series of early views of the peninsula are presented to help the reader better visualise this place as it was early in European settlement (Part 2: Early views of Pyrmont peninsula). The physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula has been transformed since European settlement, and Part 3: Physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula describes the geology, soils, topography, shoreline and drainage as they would most likely have appeared to the first Europeans to set foot there. -

John Lucey* Kilkenny, Ireland *Corresponding author: John Lucey, email: [email protected] This pdf constitutes the Version of Record published on 13th August 2019 Abstract Most modern authorities have considered Euphorbia hyberna to be native in Britain but with the possibility that it could have been introduced from Ireland. The results from a literature survey, on the historical occurrence of the species, strongly suggest that it was introduced and has become naturalised at a few locations in south-west England. Keywords: status; Cornwall; Devon; Lusitanian; horticulture Introduction The Irish Spurge (Euphorbia hyberna L.) is an extremely rare plant in England with only recent occurrences for west Cornwall, north Devon and south Somerset (Stace, 2010) although now extinct in the last vice-county (Crouch, 2014). The earliest records for the three vice-counties contained in the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI) Database (DDb) are: 1842 v.c.4 Lynton (Ward, N.B. More, W.S.) 1883 vc.1 Portreath (Marquand, E.D.) 1898 v.c.5 Badgworthy Valley (Salmon, C.E.) As the only element of the so-called Lusitanian flora in England, with an extremely restricted distribution pattern in the south-west, the species represents an unresolved biogeographical conundrum: native or naturalised? A review of the historical literature can provide valuable information on a species’ occurrence and thus may help in determining if it may have been introduced to a region. PARSONS McNeil Center for Early American Studies and KATHLEEN S. MURPHY California Polytechnic State University abstract The ocean was frequently as hostile an environment for plants and animals as it was for humankind in the eighteenth century. Existing methods of preserving the plants, fish, birds, and land animals that provided the raw materials for European science increasingly proved insufficient for the often long voyages that brought them from colonial and indigenous collectors; specimens arrived dead when they were needed alive, rotten and damaged when they were needed whole, and they fre- quently suffered as they encountered negligent and uninterested sailors, and rats and other shipboard pests that showed too much interest. This paper examines strategies of specimen transport adopted by French and British naturalists in the Atlantic world during the first half of the eigh- teenth century, arguing for the importance of maritime spaces that have often been overlooked in histories of the expanding reach of European science. Atlantic networks of specimen transport were simultaneously dis- tinctly national and endlessly entangled. Efforts to discipline maritime social environments diverged along distinctly national lines, influenced by larger patterns of scientific sociability in both Britain and France. -

The Banksian Botanical 'Suite' Arrives in Madeira on HMS Endeavour
TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS AGO: THE BANKSIAN BOTANICAL ‘SUITE’ ARRIVES IN MADEIRA ON HMS ENDEAVOUR Jordan Goodman* Abstract HMS Endeavour, the first British ship to circumnavigate the world on a scientific mission, had its first stop in Funchal on 12 August 1768 on the way to the Pacific. It was not a big ship and it sailed on its own. Not only was this a scientific voyage –initially making for Tahiti where Venus’s track across the sky could be accurately measured– but it had a remarkable and unique entourage dedicated to observing and recording the natural world. Though the ship’s commander, Lieutenant James Cook, had a good reason to call into the island’s principal port, it could have been otherwise: sea conditions, unpredictable at the best of times, might have forced him to head for Tenerife instead. Had this happened, the botanical history of Madeira might have been quite different. Fortunately for Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, the ship’s botanists, the sea was kind and the two men, the latter Linnaeus’s best student, were able to bring Hans Sloane’s pioneering botanical observations, made more than seventy years earlier, into the modern age.
