Hare Pie Newsletter, October Councillor Profile

I have lived in Hallaton for 16 years and my husband has lived here on and off for most of his life with our three sons all being born here. All of our boys attended Hallaton Primary School where I enjoyed six years working as a school governor. I have also spent two years as a member of the Parochial Church Council. I am currently a trustee for the Church Restoration Trust and also worked with the previous Parish Council to secure the village’s defibrillator at the The Fox for which which I still help manage.

The first months as a Parish Councillor have been a steep learning curve and I know we still have a way to go. I have been working on the HPC website to ensure that all the documentation is updated monthly and all of the Neighbourhood Plan information is available for everyone to see.

I am really enjoying being part of a great team working hard to take Hallaton forward whilst maintaining and respecting its wonderful history and heritage.

Boundaries and Budgets

Please can we ask all villagers to check their boundaries as we have received some complaints about overgrown hedges, tree branches, ivy etc growing over footpaths and roads making it difficult to pass.

Hallaton Parish Council will shortly be setting its budget for the next financial year and we would like to take this opportunity to ask if there are any projects being planned for next year which may require some financial contribution from the Parish Council. Funding cannot be guaranteed but from time to time village projects do receive some financial assistance from the council so it is important that this offer is made to the village as a whole.

Village Thieves

We are aware thefts have been targetting Hallaton recently, we would like to remind everyone to keep cars locked and car keys hidden away from doors and windows. NATURE NOTES

Hallaton in the Great War – Service and Sacrifice.

The family of the late Mrs Tricia Corah has given me back her copy of this three volume, 1,300 page book. It is virtually unread.

It is the ONLY copy available for sale and a great opportunity for anyone who did not place an original order to acquire one.

The first person to put a cheque through my door at 36 Eastgate for £30.00 payable to Hallaton in the Great War Research Group, along with their contact details secures this mighty work.

Denis Kenyon

The 45 Sentinels

Many thanks to everyone including the George Fenwicke Charity who has so generously donated to the project of planting 45 oak trees around the village as a living memorial to the Hallaton men killed in both World Wars. We also thank the landowners who have so enthusiastically supported the scheme.

We have raised over £7,000. Among the main costs will be the purchase of full height metal tree guards, the engraving of 45 name plaques, one to be welded to each guard. In the event of any funds being left over, they will be used to purchase and plant additional hedgerow trees.

We are planning on planting mid December before the real frosts come and are looking for volunteers to assist this and the heavy task of erecting the guards. Please give your name to Denis Kenyon – [email protected] or telephone 01858 555 602.

As this is such a special commemoration it is intended to hold a ceremony on planting the first tree. A further note will be put in November’s Hare Pie. HALLATON WATCH

Fellow parishioners of Hallaton,

Over the past week or so there has been an alarming degree of suspicious activity and criminality within the village, cars broken into, stolen, thefts from motor vehicles and an attempted burglary that we know of.

So what can we do about this?

Without going into the politics surrounding Policing and police numbers, it has to be accepted that there are not enough police officers and that we are somewhat out of the way.

All activities of this nature should be reported to the Police for monitoring and crime pattern analysis, and if they happen to be in the area then we may get a response, but what if not?

I am proposing something along the lines of a WhatsApp group – Hallaton Watch. For those who don’t know WhatsApp is a group messaging service a bit like a text messages but to a wider audience and is available on smartphones or the internet.

Its purpose would be for the real-time sharing of information relating to suspicious activity and crime within the village.

This would enable the members to be aware of any such activity and to keep a lookout for themselves and their neighbours, it could also help with identification of the perpetrators or vehicles involved which could then assist the police investigation.

It would also be of benefit if someone needed some sort of assistance, where we could rapidly respond to these calls.

Whilst there are other forums for sharing information, like ‘Nextdoor’ this does not enable any immediate alert to its subscribers.

It would not be a platform for political or religious views or the sharing of inappropriate content but for the villagers to help protect the village.

We are all susceptible to becoming victims of crime, but with a community spirit we can come together and reduce the potential for harm.

Both Tracy and I are happy to manage the app, but we do believe that all members should have admin rights so they can add other villagers to the group.

If anyone is interested then please contact me via email ([email protected]) with your details and you will be added to the group.

Letter from Rev. Cynthia

After a lovely summer, we now come yet again into Autumn and our many celebrations of Harvest. Harvest is an important time for everybody but especially here in the countryside when we remember how lucky we are. Many children have no idea where their fruit and vegetables come from, except the supermarket. We are surrounded by fields and frustrated on our roads by tractors and combine harvesters. Our school children are back at their desks working hard with an eye to their next big holiday; Christmas.

Here in our benefice we need to be looking to the future. I am now half way through my time. The last twelve months has gone very quickly as I am sure will the next twelve months, and my post will not be replaced. The giving in the 36 churches/villages in the deanery is not sufficient to provide more than 3 clergy, plus a tenth of the time of the Chaplain at Launde Abbey. We have also been allotted provision for a part time person, to work specifically with the four church schools in the deanery. How is this going to work? Well, it’s up to us. We need to accept the inevitable and consider the various options. On 22nd October, in Illston Village Hall, there is an important synod meeting when we will look at how we see the future here in this deanery and in our own churches. It’s only synod members who are allowed to vote, should that be necessary; but everybody’s voice matters and everybody is invited to attend the meeting.

Yours in Christ Cynthia !"##"$%&'( )*+,&$-./%0,((1%&-%2-3145$
