He chose the Ajmer Sharif dargah as a target to deter Hindus from going there. In his statement recorded before a magistrate in Delhi, he said: “I told everybody, bomb ka jawab bomb se dena chahiye' [bombs should be answered with bombs]. And Samjhauta Express was chosen because it was mostly used by Pakistanis, according to Tehelka news magazine, which has also uploaded the statement on its website. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader's statement is legally admissible evidence, crucial for the investigators probing the terror bombings targeting Muslims at religious and other places. He also admitted to having planned terror attacks in Malegaon, on the Mecca Masjid and the Samjhauta Express. In his confession, recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code before Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Dabas at the Tis Hazari Courts on December 18 last, the arrested RSS leader confessed that he and other Hindu activists were involved in bombings at Muslim religious places because they wanted to answer every Islamist terror act with a “bomb for bomb” policy. Names key conspirators His 42-page confession, recorded in Hindi, has been reported in Tehelka's latest cover story, “In the Words of a Zealot.” He has named senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar, the murdered RSS pracharak Sunil Joshi, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and senior RSS pracharaks Sandeep Dange and Ramji Kalsangra, among others, as key conspirators in the terror blasts. According to Swami Aseemanand, Mr. Kumar, who was recently questioned by the CBI, had financed several of the blasts, while Joshi and his team executed many of them. He said the terror conspiracy was hatched over several meetings at which he was present, with the Hindutva leaders. According to the Swami, the Islamist terror strikes on Sankatmochan temple in Varanasi and Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar triggered their conspiracy. The magazine says that Aseemanand, of the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram in Gujarat's Dang district, told the Metropolitan Magistrate that in a 2006 meeting with other Hindu radicals, including murdered RSS leader Sunil Joshi and Pragya Singh Thakur, it was he who propagated the policy of ‘bomb for bomb.' Joshi, alleged to be the key conspirator in the Ajmer dargah blast, was shot dead in Madhya Pradesh in 2007. He is suspected to have been killed by his own men to cover up the terror act, the Rajasthan Police has claimed. Discover the Evidence Is Jesus Really God? His confession is the first direct evidence of the involvement of Hindutva extremists in the 2006 Malegaon blasts and the Samjhauta Express blasts even though there have been accusations of their involvement in the Mecca Masjid and Ajmer blasts. Aseemanand admitted that they organised the terror acts as “the Muslim terrorists started attacking Hindu temples in 2002. This caused great concern and anger in me. I used to share my concerns about the growing menace of Islamic terrorism.” He said he first got in touch with Joshi and Thakur in 2003. It was the terror attack on the Sankatmochan temple in March 2006 that became the real flashpoint for them. “In March 2006, Pragya Thakur, Sunil Joshi, Bharat Riteshwar and I decided to give a befitting reply to the Sankatmochan blasts,” Aseemanand told the Magistrate. Aseemanand is known for having worked to reconvert people in tribal areas. He also ran the Shabari Dham Ashram and has a long list of followers, many of whom have been questioned by the CBI. More than 68 people were killed in the Samjhauta Express bombing in 2007, seven were killed in the 2008 Malegaon blasts, while three were killed in the 2007 bombing at the Ajmer dargah. null 01. 10 WAYS TO 07. When the results were announced on 16th May 2014, the BJP had won 280 of the 542 seats, with no party getting even the statutory 10 per cent of the seats to claim the position of Leader of the Opposition. The days, weeks and months since the historic victory, and his assuming ofice on 26th May 2014 as the 14th Prime Minister of India, have seen the rising pitch of a crescendo of hate speech against Muslims and Christians. Their identity derided, their patriotism scoffed at, their citizenship questioned, their faith mocked. The environment has degenerated into one of coercion, divisiveness, and suspicion. This has percolated to the small towns and villages or rural India, severing bonds forged in a dialogue of life over the centuries, shattering the harmony build around the messages of peace and brotherhood given us by the Suis and the men and women who led the Freedom Struggle under Mahatma Gandhi.

ABSTRACT India has faced the challenge of religious terrorism for almost three decades. This phenomenon – in-spite of the Indian government’s comprehensive effort to contain it – has been spreading its vicious influence and expanding its support base among the conflicting religious communities in many parts of the country. The existing views, in regard to the rise of religious terrorism, suggest that economic, socio-political or geo-political issues (that cropped up during the post-partition period) are responsible for the birth of the problem. However, so far no study is done collectively on the four (Sikh, Kashmiri Muslim, Hindu and Naga Christian) religious communities to explain the cause of the problem.

4/19/2019 Scroll - Hindutva terror acquittals expose Indias deeply compromised criminal justice system SAFFRON TERROR ‘Hindutva terror’ acquittals expose India’s deeply compromised criminal justice system One by one, persons credibly charged with Hindutva terror attacks since 2006 have been discharged by courts, always on grounds of shoddy police investigation. Mohsin Alam Bhat & Harsh Mander 3 hours ago Pragya Thakur and Assemanand. India’s criminal justice system has long been profoundly compromised by its deeply ingrained prejudice against India’s oppressed populations – Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims, women and the poor. Under the watch of successive governments, this institutional bias has corroded every arm of the justice system – the police, the prosecution and the courts. https://scroll.in/article/print/920075 1/14 4/19/2019 Scroll - Hindutva terror acquittals expose Indias deeply compromised criminal justice system In its hostility to Muslims, however, the justice system has arguably plumbed its lowest depths in the years since Narendra Modi took office as India’s prime minister in 2014. Even as a deadly scourge of cow lynching and other hate crimes peaked in this period, the police frequently would register criminal charges against the victims, protecting the attackers instead. Often cow or love jihad vigilantes and the police would be seen working closely in unison. In Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, targeted extra-judicial killings surged. What is more, in these years, those charged with communal hate crimes and fake extra-judicial killings in Gujarat in 2002 and after, including a senior minister and many men in uniform, were first released on bail soon after the government changed hands in Delhi in 2014, and then acquitted one by one.

  • Saffron Terror Cases
ISSN (Online) - 2349-8846 Clean Chits, Deaths, Acquittals: The Unending 'Tricks of Fate' in Saffron Terror Cases SHARIB A ALI Sharib A Ali ([email protected]) is a human rights practitioner based in Delhi. His research focus is on terror prosecution in India. Vol. 53, Issue No. 17, 28 Apr, 2018 The author would like to thank Monica Sakhrani for her comments on the first draft of this article and for help in thinking through the subject. The article looks at the "experiment of saffron terror," its link with the ruling dispensation, and how the cases of saffron terror have unfolded since the National Democratic Alliance came to power in 2014. Looking at the character of Swami Aseemanand as a product of the contradictions of the experiment, it makes a case for the arrival of dual law in the country. From a criminal justice point of view, the Mecca Masjid blast case against the Abhinav Bharat members was a strong one. A confession under Section 164 in the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 with all its checks and balances, corroborating evidence, witnesses and a series of documents, files, and minutes of meetings, put together strong documentary evidence of a larger conspiracy. However, on 16 April 2018, the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court acquitted all the five accused in the Mecca Masjid blast case (Indian Express 2018). As the judgement remains unavailable, it is difficult to ascertain the judicial reasoning that went into the acquittals. As many as 66 witnesses (of the 226 deposed) turned hostile in the case (Ahuja 2018).

Religious freedom is explicitly protected under its constitution. Hindus account for a vast majority (nearly four-fifths) of the country’s populace. Hindu nationalism has been a rising political force in recent decades, by many accounts eroding India’s secular nature and leading to new assaults on the country’s religious freedoms. The 2014 national election victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (Indian Peoples’ Party or BJP) brought newly acute attention to the issue of religious freedom in India. Tracing its origins to a political party created in 1951 in collaboration with the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (National Volunteer Organization or RSS), the BJP has since gone on to win control of numerous state governments, including in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state with more than 200 million residents, one-fifth of them Muslim. The BJP’s leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is a self-avowed Hindu nationalist and lifelong RSS member with a controversial past: In 2002, during his 13-year tenure as chief minister of the Gujarat state, large-scale anti-Muslim rioting there left more than 1,000 people dead, and Modi faced accusations of complicity and/or inaction (he was later formally exculpated).

ISSN (Online) - 2349-8846 Building a 'Hindu Rashtra' through 'Seva' MALINI BHATTACHARJEE Malini Bhattacharjee teaches at the Azim Premji University, Benguluru. Vol. 56, Issue No. 3, 16 Jan, 2021 With the spectacular victory of Bharatiya Janata Party in India, the notion of Hindutva and Hindu nationalism have gained support. Malini Bhattacharjee explores the cultural appeal of the category of "seva" (service), one of the foundational pillars of the Hindu nationalist movement, and demonstrates how the political construction of seva, both as an idea and in practice, has advanced the entrenchment of Hindutva in contemporary India. The traditional dichotomy envisaged between "religion" and "nation" in the Western discourse of modernity has by now been flattened. A quick overview of religious nationalisms across different continents reveals that not only is religion capable of inhabiting modern nation states but is also comfortable thriving within a secular democratic framework. India provides an interesting case analysis as Hindu nationalism too seems to have acquired a huge momentum since the past two decades, in a nation state that has been largely democratic and secular. A recently conducted three-part survey titled, "Politics and Society between Elections'' (PSBE)1 revealed that respondents from more than 50% of the 23 states and the National Capital Region of Delhi displayed a conservative nationalist position. As Figures 1 and 2 demonstrate, religious and majoritarian nationalism is a reality in India.
