My time at Cushing, starting in March, has shown me that I have joined an organization that is extremely dedicated to its mission of helping people of diverse ages and abilities find possibility, opportunity, and growth. The possibility to achieve greater levels of success; the opportunity to be life-long learners; and the hope that each tomorrow will bring personal fulfillment, new experiences, and shared happiness.

As fiscal year 2018/19 came to an end we spent some time reflecting on the past 12 board of directors months at Cardinal Cushing Centers. We celebrated many successes and welcomed new, Kevin Kiley, Co-Chair exciting changes throughout the Cushing Community. Von Ahn to Cardinal Cushing Centers as our new Jacob Simmons, Clerk President and CEO. With nineteen years of senior leadership experience in nonprofit management and disability services, we were confident John would bring positive Sigmund R. Our Changing Lives – Building a Community Capital Campaign continues to make Youssef Abdouh progress. We were thrilled to break ground on our new MarketPlace Building which will John Cochrane be constructed over the next year. The MarketPlace will be visible and accessible directly George Drummey from Route 53, and is a 20,000 square foot, environmentally friendly building that will house the Cushing café, thrift store, and gift shop, along with state-of-the-art training Rita Harris classrooms. At the Cardinal Cushing Centers, our commitment to individuals of all ages, all faiths, and all abilities is grounded in the founding values of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi and Richard Cardinal Cushing. “Sponsorship” defines the relationship of our congregations to our service organizations. These corporate ministries, now separately incorporated, continue the ministry originally founded and fostered by us. The new MarketPlace building will provide employment training to Cushing St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care (St. Francis, WI) students and job opportunities to adults with disabilities. With the retail shops Canticle Court, Inc. and Juniper Court, Inc. (St. Francis, WI) more visible and accessible to passersby on Route 53, we hope to increase the Cardinal Stritch University (Milwaukee, WI) number of customers we serve, enhancing job training so our students are better prepared to obtain paying jobs in the community. Changes in Our Neighborhood We welcomed our new President & CEO, John F. Von Ahn, in March of 2019.

We broke ground on our new MarketPlace building, a 20,000 square foot, environmentally friendly building that will house the Cushing café, thrift store, and gift shop, along with state-of-the-art training classrooms.

Fundraising Success We raised over $221,000 for the Opportunity Fund and our Boston Marathon team raised almost $63,000.

Received $10,000 from the Flutie Foundation for the implementation of a pilot travel training program.

Our Springtime Gala broke recent records and raised over $685,000 as we honored Rockland Trust and Claudia Sorgi & Douglas Briggs for their ongoing support.

Capital Campaign Progress: We have raised $9.5 million of our 10 million dollar goal from 163 donors.

Programs Celebrating Milestones The Iron Kettle experienced great success with several large group reservations including the Council on Aging and Friendship Home. It continues to be a valuable job training experience for our students while building their social skills as they interact with guests.

We celebrated the 29 graduates of the Class of 2019 in mid-June. 26 of these students attended a Trip of a Lifetime to Disney World in May.

South Shore Industries Hanover has received numerous custom orders for woodworking projects, which is allowing us to grow the program.

Organization Excellence Our nursing department has continued its partnership with the Massasoit Community College nursing program, providing pediatric rotation experience for 14 students this semester.

Two staff graduated in April from the Regional Leadership Series hosted by the South East Department of Developmental Services Region.

We hosted Mass General Hospital’s Down Syndrome Clinic Team for a tour. We have worked closely with Dr. Brian Skotko and Attorney Dan Heffernan of Kotin Crabtree & Strong on several cases this past year.
