There is a restaurant on site and there are other eating and drinking facilities in the area. Moore Library, The University of The Bahamas The everyday life of young people on this tiny island in The Bahamas, a small British Colony during the 1950s, consisted of school, work and play. There were various ways in which they sought to make that portion of their day, devoted to play, more exciting. They engaged in such pastimes as sporting activities, matinee dances, church functions, and of course THE SHOW! As you view this exhibition, our Cinema Jitney will transport you to the sites of four cinemas that were operating in Nassau during the Fifties. You will experience these theatres through the memories of persons who would have been young adults in the 1950s, and get to see a bit of the culture of the day through the lens of these historic moviegoers. Each of these cinemas’ unique characteristic will be highlighted: The segregated space of the Savoy; the comfortable and accommodating atmosphere of the Nassau Theatre; the convenience and community feel of the Cinema and the sense of pride and passion of the Capitol. 3 Wednesday 26th June : Morning Registration 9-10 Harry C. The cinema of Giorgio Mangiamele Silvana Tuccio Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August, 2009 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Who is behind the camera? Abstract The cinema of independent film director Giorgio Mangiamele has remained in the shadows of Australian film history since the 1960s when he produced a remarkable body of films, including the feature film Clay, which was invited to the Cannes Film Festival in 1965. This thesis explores the silence that surrounds Mangiamele’s films. His oeuvre is characterised by a specific poetic vision that worked to make tangible a social reality arising out of the impact with foreignness—a foreign society, a foreign country. This thesis analyses the concept of the foreigner as a dominant feature in the development of a cinematic language, and the extent to which the foreigner as outsider intersects with the cinematic process. Each of Giorgio Mangiamele’s films depicts a sharp and sensitive picture of the dislocated figure, the foreigner apprehending the oppressive and silencing forces that surround his being whilst dealing with a new environment; at the same time the urban landscape of inner suburban Melbourne and the natural Australian landscape are recreated in the films. As well as the international recognition given to Clay, Mangiamele’s short films The Spag and Ninety-Nine Percent won Australian Film Institute awards. Giorgio Mangiamele’s films are particularly noted for their style. This thesis explores the cinematic aesthetic, visual style and language of the films.

The films in this course offer critical perspectives on the history of colonisation in Australia; the legacies of the Stolen Generations; the controversies surrounding Australia’s role in World War One; as well as Australia’s relationships with its Pacific Asian neighbours. We will focus on films that have marked significant shifts in public consciousness about the past such as Gallipoli (1981), Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) and Balibo (2009). Scarcely 30 years later, now fully inte- grated in the EU, Spain has become a receiver of immigrants from Latin America, Africa and Asia. This process has not been as pro- gressive as in the UK, Netherlands or France. It was abrupt and parallel to a more general globalization movement. This situation provides new, interesting fields to observe phenomena related to music and immigration in Southern Europe. This study focuses on the changes that new citizens, especially those from Southern Asian countries, stimulate within Spain’s musical market and cul- tural policies, taking as the main subject popular music and ci- nema from bollywood. Through the comparison of two extremely different cities as a paradigm of models of cohabitation, we can see how the diverse orientation of specific cultural and musical practi- ces in this case, those within the bollywood ‘microcosm’, can alter the intercultural scene and paint different perceptions of the immi- grant communities.
