  • The Medical History of John Knox
Proc. R. Coll. Physicians Edinb. 1998; 28: 81-101 THE MEDICAL HISTORY OF JOHN KNOX J. Wilkinson,* 70 Craigleith Hill Gardens, Edinburgh EH4 2DH One of the most striking monuments in the city of Geneva is the large and extensive memorial to the leaders of the Reformation in Europe. This monument took eight years to complete and was finally unveiled and dedicated in the year 1917 in the midst of the First World War. The central group of statues of this monument commemorates the Swiss Reformers and includes a statue of John Knox, which is a reminder of the significant part that Knox played in the Swiss Reformation in addition to his vital role in the Reformation in Scotland. John Knox was the last of the three great leaders of the European Protestant Reformation to die. On 18 February 1546, Martin Luther died at the age of 63 in Eisleben in Eastern Germany of myocardial infarction, secondary to systemic hypertension. John Calvin died at the age of 54 in Geneva on 27 May 1564 of pulmonary tuberculosis.2 Knox was 57 years old when he died in Edinburgh on 24 November 1572. Although some specific clinical details of the cause of his death have come down to us, very few details are available of his medical history during the course of his life. THE SOURCES The main primary source of our information about the life and activities of John Knox is in his own writings. These were collected and edited by David Laing in six volumes under the title The Works of John Knox, and published in Edinburgh over the years 1846 to 1864.

  • The Saltire Society Literary Awards, 1936-2015: a Cultural History
The Saltire Society Literary Awards, 1936-2015: A Cultural History Stevie Marsden A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Publishing Studies University of Stirling 2016 2 Abstract This thesis presents a history of the Saltire Society Literary Awards and examines their status and role within Scotland’s literary and publishing culture. The Society was founded at a critical inter-war period during which Scottish writers, artists and cultural commentators were re-imagining Scotland’s political and cultural identity. The Society, therefore, was a product of this reformative era in Scotland’s modern history. The Society’s identity and position within this inter- and post-war reformation is reflected in the Literary Awards, which are a means by which the Society attempts to accomplish some of its constitutional aims. The purpose of this thesis is three-fold. Firstly, it has filled a conspicuous gap in modern Scottish cultural history by offering a historically accurate description of the founding of the Saltire Society in 1936 and the development of the Society’s Literary Awards up until 2015. Secondly, this thesis demonstrates how the Society’s Literary Awards function in relation to key critical discourses pertinent to contemporary book award culture, such as forms of capital, national identity and gender. Finally, this thesis proffers an in-depth analysis of book award judgment culture. Through an analysis of the linguistic and social interactions between Saltire Society Literary Award judges, this thesis is the first study of its kind which considers exactly how literary award judging panels facilitate the judgement process.

He opened his first bookshop at Infirmary Street, Edinburgh in 1848. This shop remained the main store, expanding to take over adjoining properties on South Bridge. Its location opposite Edinburgh University Old College promoted its business as general and academic booksellers. The business converted to a limited status in the 1970s and rapidly expanded to a high in 1998 with 35 UK branches and 650 staff. In 1994 Thin bought 20 Volume One shops. However, James Thin went into voluntary administration in January 2002 and 8 shops were bought by Ottakars and 12 shops, including South Bridge, were bought by Blackwell’s. James Thin’s publishing house Mercat Press had a management buy out. Throughout its long history the company remained in the control of the Thin family.
