Pharmacists Serving Under War Conditions in Northern Norway
PHARMACISTS SERVING UNDER WAR CONDITIONS IN NORTHERN NORWAY Klevstrand, Rolf 2609 Lillehammer, Norway This is a tale of a few pharmacists in three small towns in the northernmost part of Europe during World War Two. The towns were partly destroyed by air raids. This is of course only a small part of the long tale of sufferings during the war. A map of the Northern part of Scandinavia will show the position of the area (Fig. 1). On the map the counties of Norway are marked with different colours, Finnmark, the northernmost in light blue. Fig. 1 Like the rest of Norway Finnmark was occupied by German forces in 1940. When Germany attacked the Soviet Union in June 1941, it became part of an important war zone. The next Fig 2 map (Fig. 2) shows the short distances from the towns Vardø, Vadsø, and Kirkenes to Russia. There were German garrisons in each of them, the largest one in Kirkenes which at times had ten times as many soldiers as the local population. “Festung Kirkenes” was an important supply centre for the forces at the front in northern Russia. This made it an important target for Russian bombers. The town had not less than 328 air raids during the war. Each of the towns had one pharmacy, but there was a shortage of trained pharmacists. In 1940 the government issued a decree concerning the duty to serve for medical personnel. In accordance with this, two recently graduated male pharmacists were ordered to work in the pharmacies of Kirkenes and Vadsø from the beginning of 1944. -

The Nickel Mineralizationof the Rana Mafic Intrusion, Nordland, Norway
• THE NICKEL MINERALIZATIONOF THE RANA MAFIC INTRUSION, NORDLAND, NORWAY. Rognvald Boyd and Carl 0. Mathiesen Norges geologiskeundersøkelse,Postboks 3006, 7001 Trondheim, Norway. NORGES GEOLOGISKE UNDERSØKELSE ABSTRACT The Råna synorogenicCaledonide intrusion in north Norway contains pentlandite+pyrrhotite+chalcopyrite+pyritedisseminationsgrading up tO 0.8% sulfide nickel in peridotite in the northwesternpart of the body. Peridotite and pyroxenite occur as bands and lenses within a peripheral zone mainly of norite, around a core mainly of quartz-norite.Crystal settling appears to have been an important process at Råna but over much of the intrusion primary structureshave been severely disturbed by the later Caledonian fold phases which also involved local overthrusting: these movements resulted in iniolding and thrustingof units of semipel- itic and calesilicate gneiss and black schist into the intrusion. The body has the form of an inverted, possibly truncated cone with its axiS plunging northwestwardsat a moderate angle. The peridotites show no obvioUs systematicvariation of sulfide or silicate mineralogy across strike. Locally, ass&iated with certain deformation zones, disseminationpasses into ma3sive mobilized sulfide ti with up to 5% nickel. The proximity of sulfide-bearingblack schists to mineralized rocks, the occurrence of graphite djsseminated in peridotite and other factors, suggest assimilationof sulfur from the Country rocks. Sulfur isotope studies do not, however, offer confirmationof the hypo- thesis that an external source ot sulfur nas had more than very local significanceat Råna. 1 NORGES GEOLOGISKE UNDERSØKELSE • INTRODUCTION The Råna mafic intrusion lies at approximately68°30'N, in steep mountainous terrain 20 km soutnwest of the iron-ore port of Narvik in north Norway (Fig.1).The present paper will give a brief description of the general geology of the complex, with a more detailed consider- ation of the sulfide-bearingareas - especially the main one at Bruvann (Fig.2) - and of the cenetic implicationsinvolved. -

Geochemical Evidence for a Rift-Related Origin of Metadolerites Within the Senja Nappe, Troms, North Norwegian Caledonides: a Discussion
Discussion Geochemical evidence for a rift-related origin of metadolerites within the Senja Nappe, Troms, north Norwegian Caledonides: a discussion R. D. DALLMEYER Dallmeyer, R. D.: Geochemical evidence for a rift-related origin of metadolerites within the Senja Nappe, Troms, north Norwegian Caledonides: a discussion. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 68, pp. 133-134. Oslo 1988. ISSN 0029-196X. Bergh & Andresen (1987) have suggested correlation of the Senja Nappe (Troms District, North Norway) with Ordovician-Sihirian sequences of the Balsfjord Group which unconformably overlie mafic-ultra mafic rocks of the Lyngen Nappe. This is inconsistent with c. 475-500Ma post-metamorphic 40Arj39Ar homblende cooling ages previously reported for the Senja Nappe. Field and geochronologic characteristics indicate correlation of the Senja Nappe with other units of the regional Middle Allochthon Scandinavian succession. R. D. Dal/meyer, Department of Geology, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia 30602, U.S.A. Bergh & Andresen (1987) have presented geo Cumbest & Dallmeyer (1985) and Dallmeyer & chemical analyses of foliated, polydeformed Hames (1986), document a complex, polyor metadolerite dikes within marble and mica schist ogenic tectonothermal evolution for the Senja of the Senja Nappe in the Troms district of the Nappe. This involved initial growth of a middle north Norwegian Caledonides. They interpreted amphibolite facies mineral assemblage which is their results to indicate that protoliths of the dikes only locally preserved as rotated porphyroclasts were MORB basalts with affinities transitional within a penetrative mylonitic foliation. This fab between 'within plate' and 'plate margin'settings. ric developed during emplacement of the Nappe Bergh & Andresen suggested that the protoliths into its present relative structural position on were emplaced into a platformal or miogeoclinal synchronously imbricated, crystalline basement sequence similar to that of the Caledonide Middle units (with geochronological characteristics indi Allochthon. -

Form B. Web Information Certifier Guldbrand Skjönberg and co-certifier Barbara Minuzzo Presentation of the Safe Community Programmes Troms is one of 19 administrative regions in Norway, and includes 24 municipalities. Troms County Government is an elected body governing the county, dependent on the direct or indirect support of the County Parliament. The County Government is responsible for the council administration, and each executive councilor is a portfolio holder and has responsibility for one or more of the departments. Troms County Government aims to create a better region to live in, and contributes towards the development of the High North into an attractive region and to develop Troms as a leading environmental county. Norwegian County Councils are today part of a three level governance system: 1. Central Government 2. Administrative regions,(County Councils 19 ) 3. Municipalities (431 ) County Councils are governed by the elected regional politicians and play a central coordinating role in regional politics. In developing Troms as a strong and healthy region, some of the council's tasks include: -Management of secondary education, continuing education and trainee programmes -Management of county roads (Troms: 3000 km) -Public and school transport -Support of business, social and economic development -Administration of regional project funds -Cultural heritage, county libraries, sports, nature & leisure activities, general public health -Dental Health Service The implementation of the safe community work in Troms is based on a regional model. It is the intersectoral action-plan Safe County 2012-2015 injury prevention and safety promotion work, but also other plans such as the Regional Transport Plan ( including traffic safety) which form the basis for the work. This requires among other cooperation with the municipalities, the university in Tromsø, the hospitals in the region, Norwegian public roads administration and companies with special competence on safety promotion like Norsafety in Harstad. -
