We'll sing the chorus used during the 7th inning stretch. Mission Statement What Is Rotary? Get to know your Rotary Magazine July 2019 Rotary Club of New Tampa Facebook is online Sponsors Events July 12th RCNT Presentation - Officer Ben Creelman (TPD) July 12th RCNT Foundation Annual Meeting July 19th RCNT Presentation - Jennifer Moore (Crisis Center of Tampa Bay) Birthdays You can listen to the WHOLE song here: Take Me Out to the Ball Game There are 2 verses that accompany the No Birthdays Found chorus... It's quite a hoot. Jack Norworth, while riding a subway train, was inspired by a sign that said "Baseball Today Polo Grounds". In the song, Katie's beau calls to ask her out to see a show. She accepts the date, but Wedding only if her date will take her out to the baseball game. Anniversaries The words were set to music by Albert Von Tilzer. (Norworth and Von Tilzer finally saw their first Major League Baseball games 32 and 20 years later, respectively.) The song was first sung by Norworth's then-wife Nora No Wedding Anniversaries Bayes and popularized by many other vaudeville acts. It was played at a ballpark for the first known time in Found 1934, at a high-school game in Los Angeles; it was played later that year during the fourth game of the 1934 World Series. Club Leaders Norworth wrote an alternative version of the song in 1927. (Norworth and Bayes were famous for writing and performing such hits as "Shine On, Harvest Moon".) With the sale of so many records, sheet music, and piano Ann C. Wade rolls, the song became one of the most popular hits of 1908. The Haydn Quartet singing group, led by popular President tenor Harry MacDonough, recorded a successful version on Victor Records. The most famous recording of the song was credited to "Billy Murray and the Haydn Quartet", even though Murray did not sing on it. The confusion, nonetheless, is so pervasive that, when "Take Me Out to the Ball Walter Oles Jr Game" was selected by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America President-Elect as one of the 365 top "Songs of the Century", the song was credited to Billy Murray, implying his recording of it as having received the most votes among songs from the first decade. The first recorded version was by Edward Meeker. Meeker's recording was selected by the Library of Congress as a 2010 addition to the National Jason M Contino Recording Registry, which selects recordings annually that are "culturally, historically, or aesthetically Secretary significant". Tracy Yvonne Kimbrough District Treasurer Nathan Davis Marvel DCO-District Comm. Officer Service Projects Schedule By Dennis Loomis Meals on Wheels Our Clubs Meals on Wheels Committee would like to make you aware of this service opportunity. One of RCNTs on-going service projects is its sponsorship of the NT1 and NT2 routes each Monday for Meals on Wheels. We have recently had a team-member resign. The remaining team members are sufficient to cover the routes, however I would like to see if we could get one RCNT member who would like to join our team as either a substitute or full-time team member for the September through December time period. The person could then decide if they want to stay on the team starting in January as either a sub or full-time person. Team members are normally scheduled for seven or eight routes per year and given the opportunity for input into the schedule. If something comes up, team members are good about trading and I am normally available to cover if no one else can. Both of our routes are in the Tampa Palms or New Tampa regions (Hillsborough County); take about 90 minutes to complete; and start at the Lutheran Church in Tampa Palms at 1130 AM and end there at about 1 pm. Anyone who may wish to consider this service opportunity could ride with one of our volunteers to learn the procedures and see if this would be something they would like to do. In order to become a volunteer, one must undergo a free background check with Meals on Wheels and attend an orientation session which typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes. They also must ride with either myself or one of our other volunteers before doing their own route. Please contact Dennis Loomis, [email protected], if you would like to volunteer. Rotary Club of New Tampa Mission Statement We promote the development of genuine friendships by helping members build their strengths to apply the ideal of "service above self." We positively impact the lives of others in our community and support Rotary International's global and service efforts. What Is Rotary? We are 1.2 million community and business leaders who create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world. Our differing occupations, cultures, and countries give us a unique perspective. Our shared passion for service helps us accomplish the remarkable.

  • Songs of the Ziegfeld Follies
SONGS OF THE ZIEGFELD FOLLIES DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Ann Ommen, B.M., M.A. The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Professor Graeme Boone, Adviser Approved by Professor Thomas Postlewait Professor Danielle Fosler-Lussier _________________________ Adviser Graduate Program in Music Copyright by Ann Ommen 2007 ABSTRACT Enormously popular in their own time, the Ziegfeld Follies have become an icon of American popular culture. Produced annually by Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. between 1907 and 1931, these revues were and still are best-known for their lavish production numbers which brought unprecedented attention to members of the chorus. They have served as inspiration for generations of filmmakers, playwrights, and popular authors, but have only been studied by a small number of scholars, primarily those working in cultural studies. For the first time, this dissertation brings a musicological identity to the Follies by examining their songs. It addresses the legends surrounding certain songs so that their performance history can be better understood. It discusses representations of gender, race, and national identity in songs of the Follies, revealing the cultural beliefs Ziegfeld thought would be most acceptable to his largely white, middle-class audiences. It dissects comic song performances to show a specifically musical component to the humor of the Follies. Finally, it analyzes compositional techniques in the lyrics of Gene Buck and in the songs written by Irving Berlin for the Ziegfeld Follies of 1927 , the only Follies production to have been written by a single songwriter.

  • Over There” – Nora Bayes (1917) Added to the National Registry: 2005 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“Over There” – Nora Bayes (1917) Added to the National Registry: 2005 Essay by Cary O’Dell “Over There” sheet music Original release label George M. Cohan featuring Nora Bayes A song forever intertwined with American patriotism and World War I especially, Nora Bayes’ “Over There” was named to the National Recording Registry in 2005. “Over There” was the work of prolific Broadway tunesmith George M. Cohan who supposedly wrote the tune while on a train, inspired by a rash of war-related headlines on the newspapers around him. It would prove to be Cohan’s only song ever written not specifically for a stage musical. It would also prove to be the final piece of Cohan’s patriotic, if unofficial, musical triptych, positioned after “Yankee Doodle Dandy” (written in 1904) and “You’re a Grand Ole Flag” (written in 1906). Though some sources credit Broadway singer Charles King with the first public performance of “Over There,” Bayes quickly became identified with the song, and she is praised in period accounts for public renditions of the song even before she recorded it for Victor on July 13, 1917. Her recording competed with strong versions by various male soloists, quartets and orchestras, including ones by Enrico Caruso and Billy Murray, a leading performer of Cohan songs who had scored a massive hit in 1906 with his version of “You’re a Grand Old Rag.” It is her version of “Over There,” however, that has endured. Bayes (born Eleanora Goldberg on October 3, 1880) was a major star of early 20th century recording, Broadway and vaudeville.
