Storyboard Masterclass STORYBOARD MASTERCLASS Brown Bag Films® presents a Storyboard Masterclass with US director Norton Virgien on Thursday 19th May 2011 Brown Bag Films® in association with Pegbar.ie are hosting an evening with one of Hollywood’s leading animation directors, Norton Virgien (Rugrats). The event is aimed at aspiring storyboard artists who wish to understand the craft of storyboarding on international television series. Norton will discuss his extensive experience and go through examples of good (and not so good) storyboards, as well as showing episodic animatics of work in production. The event will cover the role of a storyboard artist, a retakes artist and storyboard supervisor as well as outline the expectations and standards set by US and European broadcasters. Commenting on the master class, Brown Bag Films® Creative Director Darragh O’Connell said “Storyboard artists are one of the key hires on any TV series. To date we have struggled to find skilled board artists in Ireland that have the experience required from U.S. broadcasters, so we find ourselves having to source storyboard artists from the US and all over Europe.’ “Being able to draw is only part of the process; a good storyboard artist must understand story, editing, camera, timing and above all the audience. This is an opportunity for Irish talent to learn from the best in the business and hopefully be the first of many steps in identifying and developing a pool of Irish board artists.” The master class is free and open to animation graduates and professionals who may be interested in becoming a storyboard artist or improving their storyboard skills. The event will be held in the screening room of Brown Bag Films® new annex studio in Smithfield and details are available on the blogsite www.brownblogfilms.com About Norton Animator Norton Virgien began his directing career in 1990 as part of the original team for Nickelodeon’s “Rugrats”. A two time Emmy winner for “Rugrats”, Norton also directed episodes of the critically acclaimed “Duckman” series and the CBS series “Santo Bugito”, before joining with Igor Kovolyov to direct 1998’s “The Rugrats Movie”, which became the first non-Disney animated release to gross more than $100 million dollars. Subsequently Norton was a Co-Producer on the Klasky Csupo features "Rugrats in Paris" and "The Wild Thornberrys Movie", and a Co- Director of the 2004 release "Rugrats Go Wild". In early 2005 he directed a thirteen episode season of the Discovery Channel series “Tutenstein”, winning a third Emmy. In 2009, for Universal Animation, he directed a DVD sequel to the “Curious George Movie”. Most recently he has been directing for Brown Bag Films in Dublin, Ireland, supervising the Disney kids’ CGI series “Doc McStuffins”, slated to appear in 2012.     Jan/Feb Student Rabbi Ben Freed 2021 Tevet/ Shalom y’all, Shevat/ During January and the first half of February we will cover one of the most exciting stories ever Adar told during our weekly Torah readings. The story of Moses, the prince of Egypt who grew up to 5781 lead the Israelites out of slavery is so captivating that it has been recreated and re-told over and over again. It has been made into iconic movies by Cecil B. DeMille, Dreamworks, and—of course—The Rugrats. As Jews we focus on this story twice each year, once when we read it from the Torah in the winter and again in the spring around the seder table when we celebrate Passover. But there’s one thing about this story that makes it great for movies and TV specials but harder to use as a model for a healthy Jewish community. The problem with the story is that it is basically all about one person. Sure, there are plenty of great supporting characters—Pharoah, Aaron, and Miriam immediately come to mind—but there’s only one lead actor: Moses. To be clear, I don’t entirely blame Moses for this. When God appeared to him at the burning bush he took on the role reluctantly and tried to put someone else in the spotlight. However, once he took over, it’s clear that Moses had a difficult time trusting others and delegating responsibility. Not only does the narrative center around Moses, but he also has a tendency to centralize power and responsibility.

Fifty years ago, when I was 20, I went to Israel for the summer after my junior year in college. And though I arranged to meet people along the way, I basically went by myself because going to Israel was my main focus, and my friends were uncertain if they would get there or spend much time there. I worked on a kibbutz for a month and traveled afterwards for 2 weeks. As Beva, who had been there the year before, told me it would be, it was a life altering experience. A few months ago, on the 50th anniversary of my trip I again went to Israel by myself. I joined a group – CAARI- of wonderful active retired individuals. We volunteered, we toured, we met with informed speakers and we ate a lot. This time it was a life reaffirming experience. Heather Hendershot’s anthology Nickelodeon Nation opens with a testament to the strength of Nickelodeon in the children’s media marketplace. Noting that The Rugrats Movie grossed over $100 million, officially qualifying it as a blockbuster, and that the Nickel- odeon television channel (coolly referred to as “Nick”) has repeatedly ranked number one in daytime ratings in the U.S. since 1996, Hendershot establishes Nickelodeon as a pow- erful competitor to Disney with an incredible amount of influence in the realm of children’s culture. Despite Nickelodeon’s growth, in the field of children’s culture and media the major focus of academic scholarship has been the Disney Corporation—and rightly so, given the massive influence of the company in the sphere of children’s culture. But Nickel- odeon has largely been overlooked as a site of study. Hendershot’s anthology fills this void in the literature on the commercialization of children’s culture. It begins by asking how Nickelodeon became so successful. This study addresses this literature gap by analyzing depictions of religion in holiday specials aired in 2018 from three top preschool networks: Disney Junior, Nick Jr., and PBS Kids. Using qualitative content analysis, this study reveals that preschool holiday specials are shifting away from more in-depth portrayals of diverse religions toward commercialized, generalized, and secularized portrayals of Christmas. Although Chanukah and other non-Christmas religious holiday specials are, on average, older and less common than Christmas specials, they portray non-Christmas traditions in greater religious depth than the more recent and numerous Christmas specials portray Christmas.
