Fenwick Parish Church (Church of Scotland) Registered Scottish Charity No SC010062 Covenanter Page 2 From the Interim Moderator Come to church on Sundays, Members of Fenwick Parish Church! I like to watch “Antiques Roadshow” when I can. The stories behind the objects, told by owners and then experts, are fascinating enough. But, then, we arrive at the climax! “How much is it worth?” The reactions of the owners are what interest me: if it’s worth thousands: “Hurray!” But not all react like that. Or if it’s worth very little: “Ah well”. But not all react like that. My eyes fill up when the owners, who have received either good or bad news about their possession’s monetary value, say, “I wouldn’t part with it for anything”. Its sentimental value, its place in their hearts is, for them, its true value. We all own many objects whose whole value is sentimental not monetary. We all know about value that is more than monetary. So why do we place the accumulation of money so high on our priority list, sometimes at the expense of children, family, relationships? Even at the expense of our relationship with God: “I work hard all week; Sundays are my only chance for rest and recuperation with the family”. How many times have I been told that! But, recently, it was from a young father who also described a Sunday of driving his kids to and from various sports training sessions and games, and of rushing around the car dealers in between to look for a new car. I thought Sunday was the only day for r. & r. and family! Just one hour to concentrate on the Presence of God, to give over your will to His, to exult in His Love and to strengthen up your faith. Just one hour to fulfil the vows taken to do so, on your own behalf and for your children, too. Just one hour to show your neighbours and your town that you belong to Him, the God who put such a huge value on us that He gave His precious Son. We must all ensure that we realise what is truly valuable, what should not have been discarded so easily. May God bless you all. David L Covenanter Page 3 Basis of Linking of Fenwick Parish Church (Church of Scotland) and Kilmarnock Riccarton Church of Scotland. As most of you are aware, we have been negotiating on your behalf the terms of the Basis of Linking between Fenwick and Kilmarnock Riccarton Church of Scotland. The negotiations have been amicable with both parties wanting this process to be as friendly as possible. Both sessions have met separately and together and approved the Basis of Linking which is displayed below. The short version is that Colin Strong will be our new minister, worship will be at 10:00 am instead of 10:30 am and our manse will be retained as an asset of The Church of Scotland and leased out with the profits going into our Fabric fund. On Sunday 26 February 2017, immediately after the morning worship we will have an informal congregational meeting in the church, where your session clerks will be available to discuss the agreement in detail. On Sunday 5 March, 2017, there shall be a meeting of the members of the congregation of Fenwick Parish Church immediately after morning worship. The purpose of the meeting being to consider and, if so resolved, to accept a Basis of Linking with the congregation of Kilmarnock Riccarton and to agree to the appointment of the Revd Colin A. Strong as Minister of the linked congregations. Foreword The Journal is the central, long-term, authoritative record of what the Parliament has done. The Minutes of Proceedings, which are produced for each meeting of the Parliament, do that in an immediate way, while the Journal presents essentially the same material but has the benefit of hindsight to allow any errors and infelicities of presentation to be corrected. Unlike the Official Report, which primarily records what is said, the Minutes of Proceedings, and in the longer term the Journal, provide the authoritative record of what was done. The Journal is required under Rule 16.3 of Standing Orders and contains, in addition to the Minutes of Proceedings themselves, notice of any Bill introduced*, notice of any instrument or draft instrument or any other document laid before the Parliament; notice of any report of a committee, and any other matter that the Parliament, on a motion of the Parliamentary Bureau, considers should be included. (* The requirement to include notice of Bills introduced was only added to Rule 16.3 in January 2003. However, such notices have in practice been recorded in the Annex to the Minutes of Proceedings from the outset.) Note: (DT), which appears throughout the Journal, signifies a decision taken at Decision Time.
