Despite the presumed ubiquity of vibratory communication in this group of spiders, very little is known about the characteristics and functions of the signals involved, how signals are produced and transmitted through webs, or how vibrations are perceived. In this thesis, I used the western black widow spider, Latrodectus hesperus, as my focal organism, to investigate the details of vibratory communication from sender to the receiver. My results show that male L. hesperus courtship vibration signals comprise three distinct components (abdominal tremulation, bounce and web plucks), each produced using different signal production mechanism. Larger males produced bounce and web pluck signals with high power, which suggests that these signals may carry information about male traits. I found that during the early phase of courtship, males produced these different signal components haphazardly, with little temporal organization among the individual components (unstructured signaling). However, during the later phase of courtship, as males approach females, males intermittently organized signal components into a stereotyped temporal sequence (structured signaling). -

The tribe Aelurillini (7 genera, 27 species) is represented in 16 states and in 2 union territories, Euophryini (10 genera, 16 species) in 14 states and in 4 union territories, Leptorchestini (2 genera, 3 species) only in 2 union territories, Plexippini (22 genera, 73 species) in all states except Mizoram and in 3 union territories, and Salticini (3 genera, 11 species) in 15 states and in 4 union terrioties. West Bengal harbours maximum number of species, followed by Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. Out of 129 species of the spiders listed, 70 species (54.3%) are endemic to India. A number of spider species were collected in 2011 and 2012 in various microhabitats in and around the village Letea (the Danube Delta, Romania) and on the Bulgarian Dobruja Black Sea coast. The results are the start of a proposed longer survey of the spider fauna in the area. The genus Spermophora Hentz, 1841 (with the species senoculata), Xysticus laetus Thorell, 1875 and Trochosa hispanica Simon, 1870 are mentioned in the Romanian fauna for the first time. Floronia bucculenta (Clerck, 1757) is at the first record for the Bulgarian fauna. Diagnostic drawings and photographs are presented. Résumé. En 2011 et 2012, on recueille des espèces d’araignées dans des microhabitats différents autour du village de Letea (le delta du Danube) et le long de la côte de la Mer Noire dans la Dobroudja bulgare. Les résultats sont le début d’une enquête proposée de la faune d’araignée dans la région. Le genre Spermophora Hentz, 1841 (avec l’espèce senoculata), Xysticus laetus Thorell, 1875 et Trochosa hispanica Simon, 1870 sont mentionnés pour la première fois dans la faune de Roumanie. Floronia bucculenta (Clerck, 1757) est au premier enregistrement pour la faune bulgare. Aussi on présente les dessins de diagnose et des photographies. Langona warchalowskii n. sp., a new jumping spider from South Africa is described. Key words: arachnology, taxonomy, Salticidae, Langona, new species, Afrotropical Region The genus Langona SIMON, 1901 contains 33 species (Platnick 2007), 17 of them (including the type) were described originally from Africa. Formerly described species are very poorly known. A few of African species were redescribed by Hęciak & Pró- szyński 1983. Recently described African Langona species have good documentation (Hęciak & Prószyński 1983, PrócHnieWicz & Hęciak 1994, WesołoWska & russell- SMITH 2000, WesołoWska 2006). The genus may be separated from other Aelurillinae by toothless inner cheliceral margin. Colouration is not diagnostic, as members of Langona share characteristic stripped pattern with the majority of other Aelurillinae. More reliable characters are visible in the structure of genital organs. The male pedi- palp has only single apophysis acompanied by a bunch of very dense, long and thick setae. Embolus is coiled on tip of tegulum and partially or fully hidden in deep cymbial pocket (cavity between apical part of tegulum and cymbium – see logunov 1996). The epigyne has strongly sclerotized shields in posterior part. They cover copulatory openings. Internal structure of epigyne is rather complicated, but usually well visible accessory glands fall into seminal ducts. Below description of a new species of the genus from Cape Province in South Africa is presented. -

Intensively cultivated arable land and semi-desert are two dominant habitat types in the arid agroecosystem in the northwest Negev Desert (Israel). The present study compares activity-densities and species richness of spiders in these distinctive habitat types. Sixteen wheat fields and twelve locations in the semi-desert were sampled during the winter growing season of wheat. Semi-desert habitats had more spider species and higher spider activity-densities than irrigated wheat fields. The majority of spider families, namely Gnaphosidae, Thomisidae, Salticidae, Zodariidae, Philodromidae, Dysderidae, and Clubionidae had significantly higher activity-densities in the semi-desert compared to wheat. Only two families, the Linyphiidae that strongly dominated the arable spider community and Corinnidae had higher activity- densities in wheat than in semi-desert. Out of a total of 94 spider species, fourteen had significantly higher activity-densities in semi-desert than in wheat fields and eight species had significantly higher activity-densities in wheat fields than in semi- desert. Spider families and species that dominated the semi-desert communities also occurred in the wheat fields but at lower activity-densities. -

This is the first detailed contribution on the arachnid fauna from heated greenhouses in the Botanical Garden of the P.J. Šafárik University in Košice (Slovakia). Over ten years 62 spider taxa in 21 families were found. Two spiders, Mermessus trilobatus (Emerton, 1882) and Hasarius adansoni (Audouin, 1826), were recorded in Slovakia for the first time. Another interesting record was the cellar spider Hoplopholcus sp. and a new locality for the exotic spiders Coleosoma floridanum Banks, 1900 and Triaeris stenaspis Simon, 1891 was discovered. Additionally, a short survey of other arachnids (except Acari) was done. A single specimen of a provisionally identifiable palpigrade species (cf. Eukoenenia florenciae), one harvestmen species, Opilio canestrinii (Thorell, 1876), and four pseudoscorpion species were recorded. The rare pseudoscorpion species Chthonius ressli Beier, 1956 was collected for the second time in Slovakia. Hiermit wird der erste umfangreiche Beitrag zur Spinnentierfauna des Botanischen Gartens der P.J. Šafárik Universität in Košice (Slowakei) präsentiert. Während zehn Jahren wurden 62 Spinnentaxa aus 21 Familien nachgewiesen. Zwei Spinnenarten, Mermessus trilobatus (Emerton, 1882) und Hasarius adansoni (Audouin, 1826), werden erst- mals für die Slowakei gemeldet. -
Hygropetric and Litter-Inhabiting Spiders (Araneae) from the Abruzzo Apennines (Central Italy)

Mitt. 37: 15-26 Nürnberg, Juli 2009 Hygropetric and litter-inhabiting spiders (Araneae) from the Abruzzo Apennines (Central Italy) Marco Isaia, Giuseppe Osella & Giovanna Pannunzio Abstract: We present the results of a study of spider material extracted by means of Berlese apparatus from wet mosses and by litter sieving in broadleaf woods within several natural reserves of the Abruzzo region (Central Italy). The main aim of the work is to contribute to the knowledge of the spider fauna of the Apen- nines; currently one of the lesser known in Italy. In total, 520 spiders, belonging to 49 species and 14 families were collected. The most abundant and diverse family was Linyphiidae, with 278 individuals belonging to 22 species. Altogether we provide 28 new records for the Abruzzo region, including two species of Theridiidae, twenty of Linyphiidae, four of Hahniidae and two of Thomisidae. We also present additional unpublished records of several rare, litter-inhabiting species collected by litter sieving in the same area. Data on habitat preferences and details on the Italian distribution of the rarest species are presented. This habitat is colonised including details on their Italian distribution and mainly by bryophytes (mosses and peat-mosses) habitat preference. and often harbours unique assemblages of arthro- pods, characterised by endemic or rare species. -
